SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 767,857, dated August 16, 1904.

Be it known that I, JOHN TAYLOR W001), a citizen of the United States, residing at Litchfield, Montgomery county, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Machines, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to gas-machines; and it consists of the novel features herein shown, described, and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a gas-machine constructed in accordance with the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a View in elevation, upon an enlarged scale, of the generator. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the generator upon a plane parallel with Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the generator comprises the combustion-chambers 5 and 6, the generating- burners 7 and 8, mounted in the combustion-chambers,the vaporizing-chamber 9, extending downwardly from the combustion-chamber 5, and the heatingplate 10 at the bottom of the combustion-chamber 6. The combustion-chambers 5 and 6 are open at the top and are circular in plan. The supply-pipe 11 leads to the nipple 12 at the lower end of the vaporizing-chamber 9. The vaporizing-chamber is bored from the lower end, and the plug 13 closes the lower end of the chamber. The starting-burner 14 is connected to the vaporizing-chamber by the nipple 15, said starting-burner being located directly under the heating-plate 10. Oil is supplied to the generator from the tank 16 through the pipe 11, and the flow of oil is regulated by the valve 17.
The generator is mounted in a metallic box consisting of a back 18, the bottom 19, and the top 20, the sides 21 and 22, and a door. (Not shown.) The pipe 11 extends downwardly outside of the side piece 21 and then horizontally through the said side. The discharge-valve 24 is inserted through the wall 22 and connected to the nipple 25, said nipple extending from the heating-platel0. The
The generating- burners 7 and 8 each comprise a nipple 34 to receive the gas-pipe, an expansion-chamber 35 below the nipple and having gas-openings 36 horizontally through its lower portion, and the flange 37, extending outwardly from the lower edge of the expansion-chamber and resting upon the bottom of the combustion-chamber. Screws 38 are inserted upwardly through the bottoms of the combustion-chambers and screw-seated in the flanges 37 to hold the generating-burners in position in the combustion-chambers.
The starting-burner 14 is constructed as shown in detail in my former patent, No. 728,644, dated May 21, 1903.
When it is desired to start the gas-machine, the valve 17is opened and the starting-burner started in the ordinary way, the heat of said starting-burner being directed against the heating-plate 10, and assoon as the said starting-plate becomes sufficiently hot to' produce gas in the vaporizing-chamber 9 and in the bore of the heating-plate the valve 24 is opened, and the gas is discharged into the mixing-tube 29 and into the gas-pipe 31. Then a part of the gas returns, through the gas-pipes 32 and 33, to the generating- burners 7 and 8, and when this gas is ignited a strong flame is produced in the combustion-chambers 5 and 6, and the heat from these combustion-chambers is conducted downwardly by the heating-plate and the metal of the vaporizing-chamber 9 to continue the making of gas in the vaporiZing-chamber. The system of lights to be maintained is supplied from the gas-pipe 31. As soon as the system is in operation and the generatingburners 7 and 8 are well started the starting-burner lt may be shut ofl.
The drain-pipe 39 leads from the casing 27 to a sewer or any suitable place for the purpose of carrying ofl' any overflow of gasolene or condensation.
It is obvious that the number of generatingburners may be increased. The vaporizingchamber 9 may readily be cleaned by removing the plug at its lower end.
I claim- 1. In a gas-machine: a generator comprising: the combustion-chambers 5 and 6; the generator- burners 7 and 8 mounted in the combustion-chambers; the vaporizing-chamber 9 extending downwardly from the combustion-chamber 5; and the heating-plate 10 at the bottom of the combustion-chamber 6; there being an oil-passage from the vaporizing-chamber 9 through the heating-plate; su bstantially as specified.
2. In a gas-machine: a generator comprising: the combustion-chambers 5 and 6; the generator-burners 7 and-8 mounted in the combustion-chambers; the vaporizing-chamber 9 extending downwardly from the combustiou-chamber 5; the heating-plate 10 at the bottom of the combustion-chamber 6; there being an oil-passage from the vaporizingchamber 9 through the heating-plate; in combination with the starting-burner connected to the lower end of the vaporizing-chamber and mounted under the heating-plate; substantially as specified.
3. In a gas-machine: the combustion-chambers 5 and 6; the generator- burners 7 and 8 mounted in the combustion-chambers; the vaporizing-chamber 9 extending downwardly from the combustion-chamber; the heatingplate 10 at the bottom of the combustionchamber; there being a passage through the heating-plate from the vaporizing-chamber; the casing 27 in a horizontal position; the discharge-valve connected to the heating-plate and extending through the cylindrical casing; the mixing-tube 29 extending downwardly through the casing; the gas-pipe 31 mounted upon the mixing-tube; and the gas-pipe 32 leading from the gas-pipe 31 to the generatorburners 7 and 8; substantially as specified.
