FLAVIUS J. UNDERVVOOD, OF SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI.
COAL-CHUTE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,853, dated August 16, 1904. Application filed January 14, 1903. Serial No. 139,090. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLAVIUs J. UNDERWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Chutes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in coal-chutes.
The object of my invention is to provide an adjustable cut-off for adjusting the amount of coal to be received by the engine and cuttingofi' the balance of the coal in the chute. These objects I attain by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the entire device. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view show ing the beam containing the fingers or rods which form the gate or cut-off. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the plate through which the fingers of the gate or cut-off operates. Fig. 4 is a detail showing the lever for operating the gate. Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section of the plate shown in Fig. 3.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
A represents an ordinary coal-chute. B is the inclined bottom of the same.
C is the opening at the lower front side through which the coal passes.
E represents rods or fingers for controlling the discharge of the chute.
D is a beam made long enough to reach across the opening C in front of the chute and made any desired size and length for receiving the said rods or fingers and firmly holding the same in position, also for having wheels D on the ends to operateagainst thefront side of the posts of the coal-chute to prevent friction as the beam passes up'and down in opening and closing the cut-off.
F represents a lever made of two parts F and F the front ends of which support the beam D. (Shown in Fig. 2.) The fulcrum of 'in position. The said weight and lever may be lifted by any suitable device. I prefer a rope H, with pulley I, for operating the same. Said rope may be extended to any desired position and operated with a Windlass when desired.
K is a plate provided with openings K through which the fingers E or rods of the cutoff are operated to give them strength. In the outer under side of said plate rollers L may be placed, consisting of one long roller with a groove for each of the fingers or a separate roller for one or more fingers, as desired. I prefer one roller to each finger. Rollers L are provided with asuitable groove to receive the fingers and hold them from oscillating and enable them to move upward and downward without rubbing the plate K, through which they pass.
The front end of the chute may be provided with a suitable apron for conducting the coal into the tenders of the engines. The fingers E may be any desired number and placed any desired distance apart for the purpose of stopping the coal.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a gate or cut-off for coal-chutes consisting of fingers passing up from the bottom, a supporting-roller L, for each finger to prevent friction, substantially as shown and described.
' 2. A gate or cut-off for coal-chutes consisting of rods or fingers securedin a beam having wheels on the ends of said beam to prevent friction as the same moves up and down, a weighted lever, rope and pulleys, substansubstantially as shown and described. tially as and for the purpose specified. IO
3. In a cut-off for coal-chutes, a Weighted In testimony whereof 1 aflix my signature in lever for operating the fingers provided with presence of tWo Witnesses.
a rope pulley and rollers, substantially as and FLAVIUS J. UNDERVVOOD. for the purpose specified. Witnesses:
L. A cut-off for coal-chutes consisting of fin- S. A. HASELTINE, gers to pass up from the bottom operated by GEO. T. DAVIES.
