To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J ESSE TALBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVagoner, Creek Nation, Indian Territory. have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail- Clamps, of which the following is-a specification.
Hy invention relates to certain improvements in railway joint-chairs. It has for its object to effect the joining of the rail-sections in a substantial and effective manner and so as to prevent any pounding or possible movement of said rail-sections at their points of union, the numerous advantages arising from which are obvious. g
The nature of said invention consists of the unique construction of the chair, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed and specifically pointed out by the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a broken partly side view and partly sectional view thereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the chair detached from the rail-sections. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through Fig. 1 out of the plane of the joint or point of union between rail-sections.
In the carrying out of my invention I produce the chair 1, preferably, as shown, in a single casting, the lateral portions 2 each being straight or parallel to each other a certain portion of its area, as at 2, while their remaining portions are flared or inclined outwardly and downwardly, as at T, joining the base or bottom 3 at their extreme declinations. The lastnamed points of union are such, however, especially upon the inner side of the chair, as to conform to and receive the base or foot of each of two rail-sections, the latter abutting end for end therein, as presently disclosed. Also it is noted that the cross-sectional area of the railreceiving chamber of the chair below the spline or partition therein is required to be such and is accordingly provided for herein, as shown, as to snugly or closely receive the corresponding portions of meeting rail-sections, and thus prevent, as would otherwise follow, the breaking down of said spline or partition from the weight exerted thereon by railway travel and the consequent falling of the rail-sections. This has heretofore been guarded against by the use of a split wedge driven in between an inclined bottom surface of the rail-section-receiving chamber of the chair and the under side of the rail-sections, with one branch of the split portion of the Wedge bent downward to engage the edge of said chair and retain said wedge itself in place. All of this is obviated by the use of my invention. Said chair has also therein about midway the altitude of and integral with its straight or parallel portions 2 a horizontal partition or spline 4 of suitable thickness and length, the same terminating, however, preferably, short distances inwardly from the ends of the chair proper. This partition or spline engages or enters slots 5, produced in the adjoining or abutting ends of the webs of the rail-sections, thus serving, with the lateral portions of the chair, to effectually guard said rail-sections at the joint thus formed from vertical as well as lateral displacement and against any play as distinguished from expansion and contraction, and thus prevent any pounding action thereon as the ear-wheels pass over the same, as would otherwise be the case, and consequently uneven or premature wear of the rail-sections at the joint. It is also observed that the lateral portions of the chair abut solidly up against the under sides of the tread of the railsections, and thus serve to additionally brace the latter at the joint and to further aid against the relative movement of said railsections at that point, which it is of course necessary to avoid to prevent pounding action of the ear-wheels thereon.
It will be observed that latitude is allowed herein as to details, as such may be changed as circumstances suggest without departing from the spirit of my invention and said invention yet be protected.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim-as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
