PATENT OFFICE.
ONE ONE-HUNDREDTHS TO STEWART M.
MILLER AND ERASTUS R.
HARPER, OF IHITEPINE, COLORADO.
HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 767,843, dated August 16, 1904. Application led April '7, 1904. Serial No. 202,009. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, 1125 may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. SMITH, a citizen of theUnited States, residing in Buenavista, in the county of Chaifee and State of 5 Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hose-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates t hose-couplings, and
has for its object to provide certain new and 1o useful improvements in the construction of the same, as will be hereinafter more definitely pointed out and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the couplingas-` I sembled. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of.
the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective viewof the collar carrying the locking device. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the locking-sleeve. Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1.
denotes one member of the coupling, which may be termed the female member, the same having its interior surface 2 tapered to receive 2 5 thetapered exterior surface 3 of the other member, 4, which may be termed the male member. The member 4 is provided on its exterior with a iiange 5 and in front of said iiange with a lug 6. The member 1 is exteriorly 3o screw-threaded at 7 to receive asleeve 8, provided with a bayonet-slot 9, adapted to engage the lug 6 when the parts are assembled and by reason of the inclination of said slot to jam the two members together.
3 5 Mounted loosely on member l to the rear of sleeve 8 is a collar 10, carrying a ,springpressed plunger 11, adapted when said collar is brought in contact with the sleeve 8 to lie in the path of lug 6, said plunger. having its 4o end beveled at 12-to permit 'said lug 6 to be retracted and passed by saidl plunger when the latter is moving to the locking position, said plunger preventing any movement of the lug in the opposite direction. The outer end of said plunger is formed into a thumb-piece 13 for the purpose of manually retracting said plunger. To the rear of said collar 10 is a jam-sleeve 14, interiorly screw-threaded to engage the threaded end 7 of member l.
In practice, with the sleeve 8, collar 10, and jam-sleeve 14 in position on member 1, the member 4 is inserted thereinto until lug 6 engages with bayonet-slot 9, when by rotating the two members oppositely the lug 6 by its engagement' with the inclined face of said 55 bayonet-slot will force the two members more firmly together, thus providing a water and air tight connection. In its rotation to position the lug 6 will by contact with the beveled end 12 of plunger 11 retract said plunger to 60 permit the passage of said lug, though when "once past said plunger the configuration of Vthe latter will prevent rotation in the opposite direction unless said plunger is manually retracted.
By forming the collar 10, carrying the the plunger 11, independent of the sleeve 8 an accurate adjustment of plunger 1l with respect to the bayonet-slot 9 may be obtained, the jam-sleeve 14 maintaining it in any ad- 70 justed position.
My invention, while adapted Jforvuse in any kind of hose-couplings, is particularly well adapted for use in connection with compressedair hose-drilling machines and the like, and where the coupling is liable to be dragged over the ground the locking-plunger 11 is particularly useful in preventing accidental uncoupling.
An important advantage attained by forming the sleeve 8 removable from its member 1 is that when the parts become somewhat worn by use said sleeve may be removed from its member independently and reiitted to the lug 6 by the average workman. 85
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a hose-coupling, the combination with the two members thereof adapted to engage 9C each other, one ofsaid members havinga bayonet-slot therein, and a lug mounted on the other member and adapted to engage said bayonet-slot, of means for engaging and retainingl said lug' in its locked position against any but positive displacement.
2. 1n a hose-coupling, the combination with the two members thereof adapted to engage eachother, one of said members having a bayonet-slot therein, and a lug' mounted on the other member and adapted to engage said bayonet-slot, oic an adjustable means for retaining said lug in its locked position against any but positive displacement.
3. In a hose-coupling, the combination with the two members thereof adapted to engage each other, one of said members havingl a bayonet-slot therein, and a lug' mounted on the other member and adapted to engage said bayonet-slot, of a spring-pressed locking-plunger permitting,I movement o1 said lug' to the looking,` position, but engagingl the same and preventingI motion in the opposite direction.
4C. 1n a hose-coupling, the combination with the two members thereof adapted to engage each other, one of said members havingI a bayonet-slot therein, and a lug mounted on the other member and adapted to engage said bayonet-slot, of a collar adjustable on the slot member, a spring-pressed locking-plunger carried by said collar and permittingI movement olf said lug` to the locking position, but pre/writing motion in the olrniiosite direction, and a jam-sleeve lor retainingl said collar and plunger in any adjusted position.
5. In a hose-coupling, the combination of a male and a female member adapted to engage each other, a lug mounted on one of said members, a sleeve mounted on the other member and provided with a bayonet-slot with which said lugengages, a collar loosely mounted on said slot member back of said sleeve, a springpressed locking-plunger carried by said collar, lying' in the path ot travel of said lugl in -said slot, and havingl a beveled end adapted to permit the lug to retract it when moving' to the lockingposition, but preventing motion in the opposite direction, anda jam-sleeve engaging' said Collar to look it and its plunger in any adjusted position with respect to the bayo'- net-slot. v
1n testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
