SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,717, dated August 16, 1904.

Be it known that we, J AooB SHELLHAMME IsAAo P. HENT ORN, and WVILLIAM A. HILL, citizens of the United States, residing at Ooyle, in the county of Logan and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing-Boards; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to drafting, and more particularly to that class of devices thereunder known as drawing-boards, and its object is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple in construction and of great utility to the draftsman.

Our invention will be readily understood from the following specification and by reference to the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a table embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portable board, showing the slot-cover in place. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the slot-cover.

The letter B designates the board or tabletop proper. It is essential to our invention that the space below the board shall be open. Hence in Fig. l we have illustrated the board as being supported on a spider s; but it will be understood that the board may be made in the portable form shown in Fig. 2 and supported in any desired manner. We have shown the upper surface of the board as being covered by some suitable sheet material 0; but this covering may be omitted without departing from the spirit of the invention. The board is provided with a slot S, which may be located, as preferred, within the periphery of the board. As clearly shown in Fig. 4, the opposite side walls W are beveled at w and 'w on their upper and lower edges, respectively, forming sharp ruling edges 6. We prefer to cover these ruling edges with brass m, secured along one edge beneath the covering and at the other edge to the lower Serial No. 196,714. (No model.)

bevel. Each upper bevel is in a plane substantially parallel to, but spaced from the plane of the opposite lower bevel, in order to enable a tablet or slate to be firmly held between them while lines are being drawn on its surface.

The operation will be readily understood by referring to Fig. l, in which a tablet is indicated in dotted lines as resting against one of the end walls E of'the slot and braced by the bevels on the side walls. accurately squared and preferably brassed, so that a series of parallel transverse lines may be quickly drawn on a suitable surface by slipping it up or down in the slot and using These end walls are the exposed ruling edge at the desired points. 5

In Figs. 3 and 5 we have illustrated a slotcover O, which we use in connection with the board. This cover is suitably beveled, as at 6, upon its lower side edges, so as to fit accurately within the slot with its upper surface exactly flush with the face of the drawing-board. One end of the cover is provided with a projecting tongue Q,which has in crosssection the form of a lower quadrant of a circlethat is, it has a flat upper face and a curved lower face. The adjacent end wall of the slot has formed therein a socket Q, also quadrant-like in crosssection,which is adapted to receive the tongue Q. The opposite end wall has a thumb hole /& for convenience in lifting the cover. We consider this form of tongue and socket of great value, because the flat upper faces of the quadrants form asecure bearing-surface preventing tilting of the cover, while the curved lower face permits its removal without danger of breaking the tongue or enlarging the socket.

It is obvious that the slot-cover may be employed as a separate ruler, and it may have scales of different standards engraved upon its faces. In like manner the side walls of the slot are furnished with suitable measuringmarks. The cover may also be provided with a series of holes H, which adapt it for use as a sortof beam-compass, as will be readily understood, by inserting chalk, crayon, or pencil-lead through one hole to mark with v and by inserting the rubber-tipped end of the pencil through another hole to be used as a center, yet without making a mark.

What is claimed as new is 1. A drawing-board provided with a slot having opposite side Walls beveled upon their upper and lower edges,the plane of each upper bevel being parallel to but spaced from the plane of the opposite lower bevel.

2. A drawing-board provided with a slot having squared ends and side walls beveled upon their upper and lower edges. the plane of each upper bevel being parallel to but spaced from the plane of the opposite lower bevel.

3. A drawing-board provided with a slot having one of its end walls provided with a socket having the form of a lower quadrant in cross-section; combined with a cover for said slot provided with a tongue at one end having the form of a lower quadrant in crosssection, said tongue being adapted to engage with the socket in the board.

4:- A drawing-board provided with a slot having its opposite side walls beveled upon their upper edges and one of its ends provided with a socket having the form of a lower quadrant in cross-section; combined with a cover for said slot having corresponding bevels upon its lower edges and a tongue upon one end having the form of a lower quadrant in crosssection, said tongue being adapted to engage with the socket in the board.

5. A drawing-board provided with a slot having one of its end walls provided with a socket having the form of a lower quadrant in cross-section and the other end wall provided with a thumb-hole; combined with a cover for said slot provided with a tongue at one end having the form of a lower quadrant in cross-section, said tongue being adapted to engage with the socket in the board.

6. A drawing-board provided with a slot having its side walls beveled upon their upper edges and one of its end walls provided with a socket having the form of a lower quadrant in cross-section and the other end wall provided with a thumb-hole; combined with a cover for said slot having corresponding bevels upon its lower edges and a tongue upon one end having the form of a lower quadrant in cross-section, said tongue being adapted to engage with the socket in the board.

7 A drawing-board provided with a slot having opposite side walls beveled upon their upper and lower edges,the plane of each upper bevel being parallel to but spaced from the plane of the opposite lower bevel; combined with a cover for said slot beveled upon its lower edges, said slot and cover being provided with suitable scales.
