PATENT OFFICE.
TO JACKSON SIMONTON, OF ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COPY-HOLDER FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,752, dated August 2, 1904.
Application filed January 21, 1904. Serial No, 189,986. (No model.)
To all wit/2111, it m/(ty concern:
Be itknown that I, ELsin J. BONINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Copy-Holders for Type-\Vriters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to copy-holders of the type designed particularly for use on typewriting. machines, and has for its object to provide a simple and practical copy-holder of this character comprising means for holding stenographic notes or other copy in a conspicuous position for the typist.
A special feature of the invention is to provide a copy-holder constructed with special reference to its attachment to the traveling carriage of a type-writing machine, whereby the notes or other copy may be held in the most advantageous position directly in front of the type-writer, whereby the notes or copy can be readily followed with the eyes and the manipulation of the machine maintained without the necessity of stopping to examine the copy at one side of the machine or in other inconvenient places, such as usually necessary without a device of this character.
A general object of the invention is to provide a simple construction of holder having sufficient lightness for its attachment to the traveling carriage of the machine, while at the same time embodying all the necessary elements to provide for properly and securely holding the copy, whether in the form of a note-book or loose sheet.
WVith these and many other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
The essential features of the invention involved in the structural formation of the cop yholder and the means for attaching it to the traveling carriage of the machine are necessarily susceptible to structural change without departing from the scope of the invention;
but a preferred embodiment thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the copyholder constructed in accordance with the present invention and shown applied to the traveling carriage of a type-writing machine. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same construction. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one corner of the main back member, showing the hanger-bracket for engagement with a part of the type-writing machine. Fig. 4 is an end view of the detail as shown in Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are views similar to Figs. 3 and 4, showing a slightly-modified arrangement of the engaging hook of the hanger for attachment to a different form of frame-piece upon the carriage or other part of the type-writing machine.
Like reference-numerals designate corresponding parts in the several figures in the drawings.
In carrying out the invention the same may be adapted to any of the ordinary type-writing machincs having a traveling carriage; but for illustrative purposes there is shown in the drawings a fragment of a type-writing machine of the Underwood type, said machine including the usual stationary machineframe 1 and the traveling carriage 2, having a transversely-disposcd frame piece or bar 3, which is utilized in the present invention as a convenient point of attachment for the copyholder, consisting generally of a main back member 5, constituting the frame or body portion of the device.
The main back member or body portion 5 of the copy-holder may consist'of a single blank of sheet metal, but is preferably of a skeleton formation, as is shown in the drawings, and essentially comprising a plurality of parallel longitudinally -arranged framestrips 6 and the transverselydisposed end bars 7, to which the ends of the longitudinal strips 6 are permanently united by the rivets or equivalent fastenings 8. This main back member or body portion 5 provides a backrest upon which is placed the stenographie note-book or other copy, and irrespective of the detail formation of the same the said back member or body portion 5 is designed to be arranged in an upright position at an inclination, as plainly shown in Fig. 2, and is provided at one end with a forwardly-projecting end-rest flange 9 to assist in properly holding the Work in place. At its lower edge the back member or body portion 5 is further provided with a forwardly and downwardly inclined supporting base-shelf 10, constituting a bottom support for the work and which is preferably provided with corrugations 11 to form holding-ledges to prevent the sliding down of the copy and also to steady the latter against movement by reason of the vibration of the traveling carriage supporting the copy-holder. The supporting base-shelf 10 is provided at the end adjoining the rest-flange 9 with an upturned flange 12, constituting a corner-guard for the work.
In addition to the flanges 9, 10, and 12 the back member or body portion 5 has, preferably, fitted to the end bars thereof the oppositely disposed and inwardly projecting spring clamping-fingers 13, having permanent connection 14: with said end bars and serving to clamp over the edges of a book or sheet of a size to fit between the said fingers.
To provide for attaching the back member or body portion to the carriage, the same is provided at one of its bottom corners with a longitudinally offset hanger bracket 15, formed with an open engaging hook 16, adapted to be detachably slipped over the framepiece 3 of the carriage. This hook may be sufliciently tight to have a clamping pressure upon the frame-piece, and may be disposed vertically, as'shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4:, or horizontally, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, or, in fact, in any plane according to the shape and position of the machine part or framepiece to which the holder is adapted. The construction described permits the ready attachment and detachment of the copy-holder.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, .is-
1. A copy-holder for type-writing machines comprising a main back member provided at its bottom edge with a supporting base-shelf having at one end a corner-guard, said back member being further provided at the o-pposite bottom corner with a longitudinally-offset hanger-bracket having an open engagingmember being further provided with a hangerbracket and a pair of oppositely-disposed inwardly projecting clamping fingers for the work.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
