HUGH C. BAKER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MANHOLE FOR CONDUITS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,581, dated August 2, 1904.
Application filed January 8, 1904. Serial No. 188,164. No model.)
To III/7 11-71mm it nmq concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH (l. BAKER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manholes for Conduits, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains'to make and use the same,
The object of this invention is to provide a manhole for electrical and other conduits of improved construction, whereby the said construction is simplified and the cost thereof materially reduced; and the invention consists of a manhole constructed as hereinafter described and claimed and of the means or material employed in the construction of the manhole.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which theaccompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a manhole made according to my invention, part of the cover being removed; Fig. 2, a partial section thereof on the line 2 2; Fig. 3, a plan view of a corner and end brick or block used in the construction of the body portion of the manhole: Fig. a, a similar view of one of the side bricks or blocks used in the construction of the manhole; and Figs. 5 and 6 are bottom plan views of side and corner bricks or blocks employed in the cover of the manhole.
In the practice of my invention as shown in the drawings 1 provide a manhole the body portion of which is composed of separate layers a of bricks or blocks molded from concrete or other suitable material and of a form or construction hereinafter described, and a cover 6 composed of transverse I-beams b and longitudinally-arranged end T-beams Z), together with corner bricks or blocks (1" and side bricks or blocks If, said bricks or blocks .7) and 7) being also molded from concrete or other suitable material.
The separate layers 11 of which the body portion of the manhole is composed. each con- In the form of construction shown my im I proved manhole is substantially elliptical in horizontal section, the end curves being the same as the side curves, but at the corners, at each end, are abrupt curves 0, and the end and corner bricks or blocks (6 are curved at one end to produce the curves 0. The end bricks or blocks (1 and the side bricks or blocks (15 in the separate layers are all provided with side grooves 11', whereby top and bottom flanges 11" are formed, and these flanges a facilitate the handling of the bricks or blocks and also reduce the amount of material necessary in the formation thereof. The bricks or blocks a and a are also all provided with top and bottom grooves 11", which are filled with cement or are adapted to receive cement, and at the opposite ends of the manhole are openings (Z through which the conduits are passed in the usual manner and any desired number of which may be employed, and in the form of construction shown 1 provide hooks (7 which are suspended from between two of the layers of the bricks or blocks and are intended to serve as supports for the cables.
The cover of the conduit is provided with the usual central opening around which is placed an annular plate or collar (3 over which is placed a sleeve M, which is closed by the usual cap The side bricks or blocks of the cover are supported by the I-beams b and in place of the I-beams l) inverted T-beams may be employed, if desired, and the corner bricks or blocks 6 of the cover are supported by the I-beams 7)" and the beams If, which are also inverted, and the inner ends of the beams I) are supported by the beams 5 The end bricks or blocks 1/ of the cover are provided with grooves I)" in their under sides similar to the grooves a in the top layer a of the bricks or blocks which make up the body of the manhole, and said end bricks or blocks 1) of the cover are also preferably hollowed out at the bottom or provided with chambers also hollowed out or provided with recesses 72?, similar to those in the end bricks or blocks 7)" of the cover, and are also provided with grooves Z which correspond with the grooves a in the bricks or blocks of the top layer of the body portion of the manhole and are intended for the same purpose. I
By forming the grooves 60* in the bricks or blocks from which the body portion of the manhole is made the conduit-cables may be carried around one side or both sides of the manhole in said grooves, and the hooks (Z may be made of any desired shape or length, so as to support said cables, and a greater space is thus provided within-the manhole.
It will be apparent that a manhole of any desired dimensions may be constructed in this manner, and although the bottom of the manhole is not shown it will be understood that the said bottom may be formed in the usual or any desired manner.
Having fully described my invention, what 1 claim as' new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A manhole, the body portion of which is composed of separate layers of bricks or blocks having grooves in the sides thereof and laterally directed top and bottom flanges and adapted to be reversed in the separate layers so as to break joints, substantially as shown and described.
2. A manhole, the body portion of which is composed of separate layers of bricks or blocks having grooves in the sides thereof and laterally directed top and bottom flanges and adapted to be reversed in the separate layers so as to break joints, said bricks or blocks being also provided with top and bottom grooves adapted to receive cement, substantially as shown and described.
3. A cover for manholes, comprisingtransplaced between the transverse beams, and two end bricks or blocks at each end supported by the transverse beams and the longitudinallyarranged end beams, substantially as shown and described.
4:. A cover for manholes, comprising trans verse beams and longitudinally-arranged end beams the inner ends of which are supported by the transverse beams, side bricks or blocks placed between the transverse beams and two end bricks or blocks at each end supported by the transverse beams and the longitudinallyarranged end beams, said bricks or blocks being hollowed out on their under sides and reinforced with metal, substantially as shown and described.
5. A-manhole, the body portion of which is composed of separate horizontal layers of bricks or blocks, each of said layers consisting of two different styles of bricks or blocks, all of said bricks or blocks being provided with top and bottom side flanges, substantially as shown and described.
6. A manhole, the body portion of which is composed of separate horizontal layers of bricks or blocks, each of said layers consisting of two different styles of bricks or blocks, all of said bricks or blocks being provided with top and bottom side flanges, and with top and bottom grooves, I substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 7th day of January, 1904.
HUGH C. BAKER.
