PATENT OFFICE- GAS-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 766,527, dated August 2, 1904. Application filed November 2, 1903. Serial No. 179,565. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES S. Rooms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hot Springs, (Jrarland county, State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Machines, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention is a gas-machine; and it consists in a generator provided with an escape, a new feed box or hopper, and a reservoir, gas-pipes, and a pipe for conveying the generated gas to the point where the gas is to be used.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of my invention except the pipes and guide-rods, which are in perspective. Flg. 3 is a detail perspective view of the feed box or hopper.
My invention is described as follows:
1 represents the generator; 2, the reservoir. Through the top of the generator is an escapeperforation 3, closed by a valve 4, operated by a spring 5.
Fitted in the top of the generator and extending downwardly about one-half of its length is a feed box or hopper 6. The bottom 7 of this hopper is open and slants backwardly and downwardly against the wall of the generator, and there is secured to said bottom a hinged door 8, which is a little larger all around than the hopper. Secured to the inner face and the free edge of the door is a rod 9, provided with a catch extension 10. This catch extension is adapted when the door is closed to ride upon the inclined elevation 11 at the top of the hopper. The rod 9 terminates in a hand-hole 12, by which it is operated. Before the carbid and coal-oil are put into the hopper through its mouth 13 the door is opened; but just as soon as the said carbid and coal-oil pass down into the generator the rod 9 is pulled up and the catch 10 brought up on the incline 11, so as to close the door gas-tight that none of the gas may escape from the generator through that channel.
The generator is provided with an inclined bottom 14, which runs in an opposite direction from the inclined door of the hopper, so as to throw the refuse of the carbid and oil to the bottom of the generator and to the opposite side from the hopper that it may escape through a faucet 15, attached to the generator at that point.
.In addition to the convenience of feeding by means of my newly-invented hopper 1 can successfully clean the generator, forcing the refuse out through the faucet 15 by agitating the door.
The generator is filled with water nearly to its top. As soon as the carbid and coal-oil produce gas the gas passes into a pipe 16, which extends from the top of the generator. This pipe after extending upwardly a short distance turns to one side and then downwardly and passes into the lower end of the reservoir 2 and then upwardly a little distance above the top of the water-tank 17 of the reservoir and into the bell 18.
The generator and reservoir are connected together by a union-nut19. There is also in the pipe 16 at its lowest point a dischargefaucet 20 for the discharge of any water or refuse thatmight accumulate in said gas-pipe 16. The said pipe 16 is also provided with a shut-off cock 21 to close said pipe and prevent the gas from going from the generator into the reservoir when the reservoir is full. Running from the gas-pipe 16 and from its highest point is a supply-pipe 22. This supply-pipe is also provided with a shut-elf cock, (marked 23.) The bell 18 works up and down on the inside of the water-tank 17 and has across its top four rods 2a, which extend downwardly and pass through guide-eyes 25, secured to the outer wall of the said water-tank.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A gas-generator, comprising a generator, a hopper mounted within said generator in which the carbid is contained, a door formed on the bottom of said hopper whereby the contents of said hopper may be discharged into the generator, the inclined elevation 11 at the top of the hopper, a rod 9 secured to the door, a catch extension 10 upon said rod and riding upon the inclined elevation to hold the door firmly against the bottom, a reservoir, a pipe connection connecting the generator with the reservoir, a bell located in said reservoir for containing the gas, and a plurality of valves regulating the distribution of gas, substantially as specified.
2. A gas-generator, comprising a generator, a pipe connected to the top of said generator, a reservoir, said pipe extending into said reservoir, a bell mounted within said reservoir, one end of said pipe extending upwardly into said bell, a hopper located within the generator at one-side thereof, a hinged inclined door located at the bottom of said hopper, the inclined elevation 11 at the top of the hopper, a rod 9 secured to the door, a catch extension 10 upon said rod to engage said elevation, an inclined bottom located in said generator beneath the hopper, a safetyvalve located on the generator to allow the escape of gas in case of an overpressure, a plurality of valves controlling the passage of the gas through said pipes, and guide-rods guiding the action of the bell within the reservoir, substantially as specified.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a generator having an inclined bottom, a faucet leading from the lowest part of the bottom, a reservoir, a bell located in said reservoir and suitably guided therein, a pipe connecting the generator with the bell, a hopper containing carbid located in the generator and arranged to be discharged within the generator to mix with the liquid to form a gas, the gas being discharged through the pipe into the bell, an inclined door forming the bottom of the hopper, an inclined elevation at the top of the hopper, a rod attached to the door and having a projection engaging said elevation to hold the door tightly closed, valves located on the pipe and regulated to convey the gas to thebell and from the bell to a source of distribution, substantially as specified.

5, a hopper f6 situated in the upper end of said generator, having on one side of its top walls, an inclined elevation 11, and a door 8, hinged to its lower inclined end, a rod 9 secured to the inner face of said door, said rod provided with a catch extension 10, adapted to ride upon the inclined elevation, and hold the said door firmly against the bottom 7, so as to make the said opening gastight, a pipe 16, extending upwardly from the top of the generator, then downwardly and into the lower end of the reservoir, and then upwardly to a little above the top of the waterescape-perforation tank 17 in said reservoir, a bell 18 adapted to work up and down in said water-tank 17, eyes 25 secured to the outer wall of the said watertank 17, guide-rods 2 1 secured to said bell, and working through said guide-eyes, a unionnut 19 securing together the two parts of the gas-pipe 16, and thus uniting the generator with the reservoir, in said pipe 16 at its lowest point, a shut-off valve 21 secured in said pipe 16 at its highest point, a supply-pipe 22 extending from the highest point of said pipe 16, and a shut-off valve 23 secured in said supply-pipe 22, substantially as specified.
5. 1n a gas-generator, a feed box or hopper 6, having its lower end 7 inclined downwardly and backwardly, and extending from one of its upper walls, an inclined elevation 11, a door 8 hinged to the lower end of said hopper, and adapted to close the same, a rod 9 having its lower end secured to the inner face of said door, and a catch extension 10 secured to said rod and adapted to ride upon the inclined elevation 11, and hold said door closed, substantially as specified.
