Letters Patent No. 76,608, dated April 14, 1863.
IMPROVED LEATHER-TRIMMER.
(the fitlgttnlt ttitttth ta ta tlgtst itttttts $tttut 211th mating hart at the same.
Be it known that I, LEWIS P. Gunrrs, of Marlboro, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Device for Trimming theSewed Edges of Leather, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a. part of this specification, in which 7 Figure 1 is a perspective view of'a portion of a sewing-machine toj which my improvement is applied.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same; and
Figure?) is a plan view of the slotted plate, through which the trimming-device and awl pass.
The object of my invention is to provide a means for mechanically trimming the sewed edges of pieces of leather simultaneously with or during the operation of sewing such pieces together, instead ofthe slow and tedious process of performing the same operation by hand, as is common; and
The in'ventionconsists in attaching to the and or needle-bar or carrier a knife or cutter, so arranged, in relation to the needle and awl, as to cut or trim the sewed edges of thcleather as the operation of sewing is progressing. I
Referring to the drawings, A represents an awl-carrier, attached, in any suitablemanner, to the operative parts of a machine for sewing leathen- B is the holder or presser-foet, also attached and operating in any wellknown manner, and having a slot for the-awl D to pass through, and a recess at one side,in which the cutter E plays. C is a circular plate attached to the bed of the machine, and provided with slots, through which the awl and cutter pass. E represents a cutter attached, by means of screws, to the lower part of the awl-carrier A, and so arranged as to cut or trim the edges of the leather just after the stitch is made, and so follows the motions of the needle. p
The cutter E may be adjusted nearer to or farther from the 'row of stitches, as may be desired, and thus form a smooth, even edge. The ordinary method of trimming the sewed edges of the leather is by a knife held in the hand of thej-operator. This is a slow process, and requires considerable skill and care, and sometimes results in cutting the stitches, in which case it is necessary to renew the stitching.
By my invention, such accidents are entirely prevented, and the extra labor of trimming is saved; The cutter may be readily removed at any time for sharpening'or repairs, and as easily replaced.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The knife or cutter E, attached to the awl or needle-carrier of a machine for sewing leather, and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' LEWIS P. CURTIS.
