SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 765,824, dated July 26, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MELANo'rHoN O. FELKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicora, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vhip Stock Loop Connections, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to whip-stock-loop connections, or, in other words, to means for connecting to the end of a whip-stock of the class ordinarily known as a stage-stock the terminal loop by means of which the lash is connected to the stock.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby the loop may be firmly secured to the stock in a quick, simple, and inexpensive manner.
To this end my invention consists in certain novel features, which I will now proceed to describe and will then particularly point out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a structure embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly in section, along the line or m of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows; and Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the several parts before they are assembled.
In carrying out my invention I provide a stock 1, preferably of wood, such as hickory, although any other suitable material may be employed. I form in the tip end of this stock a longitudinal slit 2, extending diametrically across the stock and longitudinally for a sufficient distance. This slit may be formed in any suitable way as, for instance, by splitting the end of the stock or by cutting, sawing, or otherwise forming a kerf or transverse groove or opening therein. The loop is indicated at 3 and may be of leather or any other suitable material. loop are brought together and inserted in the slit 2, and a ferrule or keeper 4 is then employed to unite the parts. This ferrule or keeper is of ductile metal capable of being swaged, and its normal internal diameter is greater than the external diameter of the tip of tools.
The free ends of the the stock. The ferrule or keeper is slipped over the loop and over the tip of the stock until it embraces the slit portion thereof, and its diameter is then reduced by a swaging process until it fits tightly upon and firmly grips the tip of the stock and forces the two parts into which said tip is divided by the slit firmly against the ends of the loop, thereby tightly clamping the same and holding the loop in a firm and durable connection with the end of the stock. It will be seen from Fig. 2 of the drawings that when the ferrule or keeper is thus swaged down upon the end of the stock it permanently compresses the wood of which the stock is composed and permanently maintains this compression, so that the ends of the loop are firmly and permanently grasped and held. It will also be noticed that where the ferrule or keeper is longer than that portion of the ends of the loop lying within the slit the diameter of that portion of the stock within the ferrule at the extreme end thereof is greater than the diameter of that portion lying beyond the endsof the loop, so that all tendency of the ferrule to move lengthwise of the stock is positively prevented by this enlargement of the end of the stock and the increasing taper of the stock toward the butt.
My improved construction is manifestly more durable than the usual wrapped connection, in which the ends of the loop are laid against the opposite outer sides of the stock- .tip and wound around with cord, since this connection is readily broken when the wrapping-cord is frayed and parted.
My improved connection is much more rapidly constructed, the connection being very quickly made by means of suitable swaging- It will further be noticed that the keeper or ferrule is in the form of a cylindrical sleeve without teeth or projections or special detaining devices of any kind, such as rivets or the like, the construction being therefore exceedingly simple and inexpensive and at the same time highly efficient, strengthening instead of weakening the stock.
