The invention relates to a combined box and l barrel cart. Y

The object of the present 'invention is to improve the construction of carts and to provide a` simple, inexpensive, and eiiicient one adapted to be readily converted into either a box or barrel cart.

A further objectof the invention is to provide a cart of this character which will enable a barrel to be readily mounted on it and Which will securely hold the barrel in position.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction 'and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, 'illustrated in the accompanying drawings,A and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the in# vention. 1 designates a rectangular box or body provided with a bottom composed of a fixed front section 2 and a hinged rear section 3,. which is adapted to be arranged ina horizontal position, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4 of the accompanying drawings, topermit the box or body to be used and which is also capableof being swung upwardly and forwardly to the position illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.to provide a barrel-receiving opening for adapting the cart for thereception'of a barrel. The

The arms or journals 8 extend outward beyond theb'earing-boxes and receive the hubs of wheels 10, which are secured tothe axle in any suitable manner.

-The arched or bent intermediate portion of the axle is adapted to receive a barrel 11, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of` the drawings, and it l extends to within a short distance of the rim of the wheel to enable the barrel to be easily placed upon it when it in the position shown in Fig. 2.

` The cart is provided atthe front ofthe body with depending legs 12, which are supported by braces 13, and the sides of the cart are also reinforced by bars 14, inclined, as shown,

and extended' from the front of the box or body. I The extended portion of the bars 14 are connected by a handle-bar 1,5 to venable the cart to be readily pushed or pulled. The axle is adapted to swing independently of the box or body, and the depending arched barrel-supporting portion` is connected with a locking-bar 16, pivoted at its rear end 17 to one sideof Athe arched portion of the axle and provided with intermediate and

18 and 19, adapted to engage a projection or pin 20 of one of the legs, whereby the arched portion of the axle is locked either in a vertical position or in an inclined position. The

arched portion of theaxle is swung upward to the position shown in Fig. 4 to arrange it out of the way when the box or body is used.

The section 3 isconnected with thesection 2 of the bottom by hinges 21, and the rear edge ofthe front section 2 is supported by a front transverse cleat or bar 22, extending rearward from the section 2 and provided in its extended portion with a curved recess 23, forming a seat for the front side of the barrel and conforming to the configuration of the same. I

The box or body is provided at its rear end with a bottom cleat 24, having a curved seat 25 to fit the rear side of the barrel and pivoted at its end 26 to one side of the box. Its other end is provided at its inner or rear edge with a notch 27, arranged to receive a depending bolt 28, consisting of a threaded extension of a bar 29. The bolt or threaded portion 28 receives a winged nut 30, which engages a plate 31, having an upturned edge or iange 32 for engaging the outer edge of the notched end of the rear cleat. When the clamping-plate is in engagement with the cleat 24, as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings, the said cleat is firmly secured in its closed position. The bolt or threaded extension of the bar or strap 29 is of sufficient length to permit the nut to be unscrewed for releasing the bar or cleat 24 without removing the nut or the plate. The end 26 of the bar 24 is pivoted by a bolt consisting of a threaded extension of a bar or strap 88. The bars or

29 and 33 reinforce the sides of the box or body. The sides are provided at their rear ends with opposite grooves 34, forming ways for a tail or end gate 35.

When it is desired to arrange the cart for carrying the barrel, the end-gate is removed and the hinged section of the bottom is raised. The rear cleat 24 is then opened or swung outward to permit the cart to be backed against the barrel, which is tilted or raised to permit the arched portion of the axle to swing beneath it. The bottom cleat is then closed and locked and the axle is locked in its supporting position. The hinged section of the bottom is supported by the front of the box or body, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

The cart may be readily converted into either a box or barrel cart without removing any of the parts, with the exception of the end-gate, and the grooves are so arranged as to permit the end-gate to be replaced after the barrel has been placed upon the support. The cart is adapted to receive an ordinary barrel and does not necessitate any change in the construction thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A combined box and barrel cart, comprising a box having a movable bottom-section, and an axle having a supporting barrelreceiving portion arranged to swing to a point beneath the movable section of the bottom, substantially as described. y

2. A combined box and barrel cart, provided in its bottom with a barrel-receiving opening and having a movable bottom-section for closing or covering the opening to complete the bottom of the box, and a barrel-support located beneath the movable section, substantially as described.

3. A combined box and barrel cart, provided with a box having a movable bottomsection, an axle having an arched barrel-rcceiving portion located beneath the movable section of the box and adapted to swing upward therefrom, and means for holding the arched portion of the axle in position for receiving a barrel, substantially as described.

4. A combined box and barrel cart, comprising a box provided with a bottom having a hinged rear section arranged to be swung forwardly and upwardly against the front of the box, an axle having an arched barrel-re ceiving portion, a bar pivotally connected with the barrel-receiving portion of the axle, and means for locking thc bar for holding the barrel-receiving portion of the axle either out of the way or in a position to receive a barrel, substantially as described.

5. A combined box and barrel cart, comprising a box having a movable section and provided at the front and back thereof with cleats having barrel-receiving portions, one of the cleats being hinged and adapted to swing outward, and a barrel-support located beneath the movable section, substantially as described.

6. A combined box and barrel cart, comprising a box havinga hinged bottom-section, and provided at the front and back thereof with cleats, the rear cleat being hinged and having a recess at one end, a fastening device mounted on the back and arranged to extend through the recess of the rear cleat when the latter is closed, a clamping-plate mounted on the fastening device and provided with a projecting portion for engaging the rear cleat, and means for holding the plate in engagement with the rear cleat, substantially as described.

7. A combined box and barrel cart, comprising a box having a movable bottonrsection and provided at opposite sides with inclined bars extending from one end of the box, a handle connecting the bars, and an axle having a barrel-supporting portion arranged to swing to a point beneath the movable section of the bottom, substantially as described.

8. A combined box and barrel cart, comprising a box having its bottom provided with a hinged section, and an axle provided with wheels on which the box is caused to travel, said axle having a barrel-support located beneath the hinged bottom-section of the box, whereby on raising the said bottom-section the barrel may be received therein, substantially as described.
