PATENT OE IcE.
LORAINE A. PEARSON, OF WVEST MILTON, OHIO.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,491, dated June 14, 1904.
Application filed March 10, 1904..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORAINE A. PEARSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVest Milton, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Sample-Binding Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tobacco-sample-binding machines, the features of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to conveniently bind a hand of tobacco used as a sample in preparation for the market. The mechanism is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a top view of the device. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, a part being cut away on line m, Fig. 1.
Like letters and numerals designate like parts in the two views.
The cast frame A comprises the table portion provided with quadrangular orifices 4 4 in its face and orifices to the rear for screws to effect its attachment to a bench, the part 1 1 extending downward and likewise provided with orifices for screws, and the correspond- Eng part 2. These parts are provided with orifices which serve as bearings for the spindles B O of the rollers F, which are identical in form, with the exception that the one to the right has a square projection to which is attached the hand-lever D. These rollers are held in a horizontal plane and parallel. At-
Serial No. 197,473. (No model.)
tached to the rollers adjacent to the front bearings are the two pinions IE, only one of which is shown, which mesh together, and therefore rotate simultaneously. In the notch 5 of the rollers is secured the leather strap Gr. This may be two distinct straps of uniform length or one with a central portion cut away to provide space for the binding-tape to secure the hand of tobacco. The circular dotted line H, Fig. 2, shows the position of the tobacco when bound. On the sides of the table are pins 6 6, on which to secure the tape.
The operation is thus: Place the tape transversely across the table, place the hand of tobacco on the table, and on topplace a tag, bring the ends of the tape across the hand, turn the lever until the tobacco is well pressed, then fasten by driving a tack through the tape and tag, and the work is complete. The pawl 3, pivoted to the frame, drops between the teeth of the pinion E to prevent a return movement until released to receive another hand of tobacco.
hat I claim is In a machine of the class described the combination of the frame provided with longitudinal orifices, the rollers provided with suitable notches and mounted in the frame beneath said orifices, the pinions attached to said rollers and meshing, the strap for compression extending through said orifices and secured at its ends to the notches of said rollers respectively, and the hand-lever to partially rotate said rollers, substantially as described. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
