EDMOND MORSE JONES, OF ENID, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE W. BRISBY, OF ENID, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
DEVICE FOR PLACING RAILWAY-TORPEDOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,238, dated June '7, 1904.
Application filed January 18, 1904. Serial No. 189,543- (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMOND MoRsn Jones, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Enid, in the county of Garfield and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented a new and Improved Device for Placing Railway-Torpedoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a device for enabling a person on a moving car or train to plalce railway-torpedoes in position on the rai This specification is an exact description of one example of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
10 indicates the handle of the device, which should. be of convenient length and which carries at its lower end two cheek-plates 11, suitably fastened to the handle and braced against each other at their lower ends by the journals of a roller 12, which is arranged to run on the ball of the rail, as indicated, the lower extremities of the cheek-plates straddling the rail. Said cheek-plates are formed with longitudinal slots 14:, which extend upward from the lower extremity to a point considerably above the rail and which are adapted to carry the spring-arms 15 of the torpedoes 16. The torpedoes are arranged one above the otherbetween the cheek-*filates with their spring-arms passed through the slots 14 and their transversely-extended ends engaged with the outer surfaces of the cheekplates. The spring-pressure of said arms 15 holds the torpedoes in place, and when the torpedoes are pushed downward sufficiently to clear the ends of the arms 15 from the lowerextremities of the cheek-plates 11 said arms will strike under the ball of the rail and hold the torpedo in place. It will be observed that the arms of the torpedo will not disengage the cheek-plates until the body of the torpedo is practically on top of the rail. To
strengthen the cheek plates at the points where the slots are formed, I provide braces 17, suitably fastened to the plates and extending across the slots 14, these braces having portions opposite, the slots bowed outward, so as to prevent interference with the spring-arms of the torpedoes.
In order to move the torpedoes downward, I provide a plunger-rod 18, mounted in guides 19, which slide longitudinally alongside of the cheek-plates and handle. This rod 18 has a laterally-turned end 20, carrying a plunger 21. Said plunger may be turned inward into the position shown in the drawings, in which position it will lie inactive, or it may be turned outward and the rod moved downward to clear the upper torpedoes andthen the plunger again turned inward to lie over the lowermost torpedo. When this is done, by push ing down the rod 18 said lowermost torpedo may be disengaged from the cheek-plates and simultaneously engaged with the rail, as explained. This operation may be repeated for each of the torpedoes that remain within the device.
It will be observed that by means of this invention a person on the train may place one or a number of torpedoes successively on the rails without stopping the movement of the train. The device is hand-operated entirely, and being light and simple it may be handled with facility by the trainmen.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device for placing torpedoes, the combination of a slotted supporting means, inthe slot whereof a part of the torpedo is adapted to run, and a member movably mounted in the supporting means to disengage the torpedo therefrom.
2. In a device for placing torpedoes, the
combination of a supporting means, comprising two slotted cheek-plates, in the slots whereof parts of the torpedoes are adapted to run, and a member movable between said cheekplates to disengage the torpedoes.
3. In a device for placing torpedoes, the combination of a supporting means comprising tWo slotted ch eek-plates, in the slots where of parts of the torpedoes are adapted to run, and a member movable between said cheekplates to disengage the torpedoes, said member comprising a plunger movable transversely and longitudinally, for the purpose specified.
4;. A device for placing torpedoes, comprising a supporting member adapted to carry the torpedoes, and a disengaging plunger ar- EDMOND MORSE JONES.
