To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, FRED A. SeHLoEMER, residing at Lonerock, in the county of Richland and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bob-Sleighs, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention more particularly seeks to provide an improved fifth-wheel or bodybearing attachment for the front bob of bobsleighs of a simple and economical construction which is readily adapted for use upon the ordinary form of front sleigh-bobs and which will effectively serve for yits intended purposes.
Y My invention in its generic nature comprehends a new arrangement of circle-plate supportable uponthe bolster of the front bob concentric with the king-bolt aperture, the ends of which are extended and converge to form a front bearing portion adapted to project under and have a loose connection with the roller to which the tongue is connected.
ln its more subordinate features my invention embodies an especially-arranged means for supporting the circular bearing-plate upon and bracing it to the bob-bolster, it also consisting in other details of construction and arrangement of parts, all of which will be hereinafter fully described, speciiically pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompan ying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved sleigh-section as seen from one side thereof. Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof viewed from the top. Fig. 3 is an inverted perspective view of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 4: 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the circular bearing-plate and the connec tions that join it to the bob-frame.
The general construction of the front sleighbob may be of the ordinary type, as shown in the drawings, in which l l designate the runners, 2 2 the knee or bracket castingsthat are bolted to the upper and inner faces of the runners, and 3 the transverse supporting bar or bolster supported at its ends upon the knees 2 and made fast thereto by the bolts t 4, as best shown in Figfll.
5 designates the usual face-plate, which is mounted on top of the bolster centrally thereof and provided with an aperture that registers with the usual king-bolt aperture in the bolster. The front or tongue-holding crossbar or roller 6-is also of the usual form, its ends being mounted within the metal collars 71L 7a, that are integrally formed on the inner ends of the diagonally-disposed brace-rods 7 7, that connect with the tongue 8, and the said collars 7u 7a are apertured to receive studbolts 7 b 7 b, that pass through the toe ends of the runners and which formthe pivots upon which the roller or cross bar 6 rocks. The rear end of the tongue 8 is mortised in the top of the roller-bar 6 and is made fast thereto by a pair of bolts l0 lO, the lower ends of which project through the roller 6 to receive the apertured ends of the staple 11, which is made fast by the nuts 12, that engage the threaded ends of the bolts 10 l0. The essential feature of my invention lies in the peculiar construction of and the manner in which the fifth-wheel or central bearing means is connected to the bar. rlhe said means consists of a long bar of angle-iron, which is doubled upon itself in such manner 'as to produce a substantial circular portion a., which is adapted to be supported iiatwise upon the bob-bolster concentric with the king-bolt aperture therein. From the circular portion a the ends of the angle-iron extend forward and are inclined downward with respect to the horizontal bearing portion a to form a pair of longitudinally-projected combined brace and bearing members a a', which converge and are welded or otherwise joined at the front end to form a forwardly-projecting horizontally-disposed iinger 0.2, which is loosely fitted in the staple on the under side of thc roller 6. The circular bearing portion (I. is firmly held from lateral movement upon the bolster 3 by blocks 3, which are mounted upon the bolster, which bolster carries the face-plate 5, and the said blocks 3 engage the flange (0X of the bearing portion a.. The bearing member a is also braced by the brace-irons l2, secured to the bolster and to the said bearing member a, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the complete construction and the advantages of my invention will be readily apparent. By forming the lifth-wheel or central bearing and the longitudinally-extended downwardly-inclined brace-arms of a single piece of angleiron bent to shape an economical but strong' and durable means is provided for the purposes stated. By connecting the outer end of the arms a d. to the roller. as shown and described, a means is provided for sustaining the tongue in its elevated position for holding the said tongue from tilting upward, and, furthermore, for extending the body-bearing forward, with the front end supported on the under side of the roller, the weight of the sleighbody on the front bob 'is equalized and is so transmitted to the bob that the front ends of the runners will be held down and danger of said front ends tilting upward thereby reduced to the minimum. Furthermore, by providing a bearing and connections for joining it with the bob-frame constructed in the manner shown and described the same can be readily applied to any of the ordinary types of front sleigh-bobs and without materially altering the usual arrangement thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is4
l. The combination with a front sleigh-bob of ordinary construction, of a fifth-wheel or central bearing mounted upon the bolster of the bob, said central bearing consisting of an angle-bar bent upon itself to form a circular portion concentric with the kingbolt aperture on the bolster, the ends of theisaid angle-bar being bent downwardly and convergingl y and terminating in a solid forwardlyfprojecting linger, means for supporting the circular portion llatwise upon the bolster, and the forwardly-projccting linger under the roller of the bob-frame, substantially as shown and described.
2. T he combination with the runners, the bolster and the roller pivotally mounted on the front end of the runners; of a metal plate bent to form a circular portion adapted to lie liatwise upon the bolster concentricwith the king-bolt aperture therein, the ends of the said plate forming arms and being extended forward and inclined. downward with" respect to the circular portion, the outer ends of the said arms being connected and formed into a forwardly-extending linger adapted to engage with the under side of the roller and means for supporting the circular portion of the bar on the bolster from longitudinal andllateral motion thereon.
3. rl`he combination with the runners, the bolster, the roller mounted in the front end of the runners, and blocks 8 mounted upon the bolster; of an anglesbar bent to form a circular portion a adapted to rest upon the bolster with its vertical flange in contact with the blocks 3, the ends of the said bar being extended convergingly forward and inclined downward to form side arms d, said side arms being joined at their forward ends and terminating' in a horizontally-projecting linger adapted to engage with the under side of the roller, the blocks 3 mounted on the bolster lbeing adapted to engage with the outer faces of the vertical flanges of the circular portion a, and the longitudinally-disposed truss-rods con nected to the circular' portion a and to the under side of the bolster.

The combination with the runners, the bolster, the roller mounted in the front end of the runners, and blocks 3 mounted centrally upon the bolster; of an angle-bar bent to form a circular portion a adapted to rest upon the bolster with its vertical liange in contact with the blocks 3, the ends of the said bar being extended convergingly forward and inclined downward to form side arms a', said side arms being joined at their forward ends and terminating in a horizontally-projecting linger adapted to engage with the under side of the roller, the braces 12 mounted on the bolster for engaging with the outer faces of the vertical flanges of the circular portion a and the arm a', and asupplemental angle-bar 15 curved to form a continuation of the cir cular bearing member' a and secured at its opposite ends to the side arms a', substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
