BULL-WHEEL FOR REVOLVING DERRICKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,066, dated June 7, 1904.

To all whom it may concern..-
My invention relates to improvements in bull-wheels of that class which are usually employed at the base of derrick-masts for the purpose of turning the mast and the boom of a derrick in a horizontal plane.
One object of this invention is the provision of a substantial construction of bull wheel wherein a number of channeled-iron members are assembled and united in a novel manner to secure maximum strength and rigidity.
A further object is to provide a.novel arrangement of braces or stays for solidly holding the several members in their proper relation, and, furthermore, to provide means for rigidly fastening to the wheel the foot-piece required for stepping the mast and for the pivotal support of the boom.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bullwheel constructed in accordance with my invention and showing a derrick-mast and a Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view, the plane of the section being indicated by the dotted line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is an elevation on an enlarged scale as compared Figs. 4:, 5, and 6 are detail sectional views through various parts of the improved bullwheel on the lines 4 4, 5 5, and 6 6, respectively, of Fig. 2.
The improved bull-wheelof my invention consists of a number of parts which are of simple construction and are assembled in a way to produce a light substantial structure. One member of the bull-wheel is a'rim 5, bent to a circular form from one or more pieces of channeled iron. is composed of two semicircular channelediron members assembled in abutting relation and united substantially by coupling-plates 6, which are disposed on the inside of the rim and are riveted to the meeting end portions of the members. WVithin the rim is arranged a pair of channeled-iron members 7 8, which are disposed on opposite sides of adiametrical line and extend across the rim in parallel relation to each other. The end portions of these diametrical members are shown by Figs. 2 and 5 as having abutting relation to the rim, and these cross members are united to the inner side of the rim by the angle-iron couplingplates 9, the latter being bolted to the under side of the cross members 7 8 and to the inner periphery of the rim 5. (See Fig. 5.) The rim and the crossmembers are stayed by the employment of a series of radial braces 10, each consisting of a suitable length of channeled iron. The inner ends of these radial stays are disposed in lapping relation to the cross members 7 8 near the center of the rim, said stays and the cross members being united by riveting the parts. The outer ends of the radial stays have abutting engagement with the rim, and said ends of the stays are united to the inner side of the rim by angular couplingplates 11. (Indicated partly by dotted lines in Fig. 2.)
I provide a foot or step bearing 12 to accommodate the derrick-mast A and the boom B. This foot-bearingis cast in a single piece of metal in the form shown more particularly by Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, said bearing being provided with separate sockets a L for the reception individually of the mast A and the boom B. As is usual in the art, the boom B is mounted pivotally in the step-bearing by a bolt 0, which passes through the walls of the socket t and through the lower end of the boom, said As shown by Fig. 2, the rim pivotal bolt being disposed in a horizontal position in order that the boom may swing in a vertical plane. The step bearing 12 is arranged to fit snugly between the opposing edges of the parallel cross members 7 8 of the improved bull-wheel, and said bearing is secured firmly to said members by bolts 13 14: and the angle-plates 15. The bolts 13 unite the step-bearing directly to the inner flanges of the parallel cross members 7 8, as in Fig. 4. The angle-plates 15 are disposed on the respective sides of the step-bearing 12 in order that the flanges thereof may overlap the cross members 7 8 and the sides of the step-bearing. Each angle-plate 15 is fastened solidly to one of the cross membersas, for example, by rivets 16whereas the bolts 14 unite the angle-plates to the side portions of the step-bearing. (See Fig. 4.)
The mast A is provided at a suitable point above the bull-wheel with face-blocks (Z on its respective sides, and the swinging boom B is also provided with face-blocks e on its sides. The bull-wheel is equipped with pairs of upright inclined stays 17' 18, the members of each pair being disposed in converging relation and the two pairs lying on opposite sides of the mast and boom directly over the cross members 7 8. The stays 17 18 of one pair rest at their lower ends upon the cross member 7, to which they are united by the obtuseangle coupling-plates 19, the latter being riveted to the cross member 7 and the inclined stays. The stay 18 is disposed in abutting relation to the stay 17 at a point some distance from the end thereof, and the twp stays of the pair are coupled by the angle-plate 20, which is riveted to both of the stays. "The end of the stay 17 which projects beyond the stay 18 is fastened to one face-block (.Z of the mast A by riveting or bolting the parts, as at 21, (indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3,) and said projecting end of the stay 17 is braced by another inclined channeled-iron stay 22,the latter being fastened to the projecting end of the stay 17 and to the rim 5 by the angle-plate 22 at a point between the attachment of two of the radial stays 1O thereto. The other pair of inclined stays 17 18 are united to the other cross member 8 by the obtuse-angle plates 23, and this pair of stays 17 18 for said member 8 is coupled together and fastened to the other face-block (Z of the mast in a similar way, the projecting end of said stay 18 being braced by an inclined stay 24, attached to the rim 5 in a similar way to the stay 22. The face-blocks c of the boom B are disposed in compact relation to the inclined stays 17 of the two pairs, and said stays are united by a cross-plate 25.
As is usual in the art, an operating-cable C is coiled or wrapped around the channeled rim 5 of the bull-wheel, and the end portions of this operating-cable are carried or extended through suitable openings 26, provided in the rim. The ends of the cable are fastened to turnbuckles 27, which are attached to anchor-plates 28, the latter being firmly secured to the cross members 7 8 of the bullwheel, thereby providing an adjustable and secure means for anchoring the end portions of the operating-cable to said bull-wheel.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A derrick bull Wheel having a rim formed by segmental members assembled in endwise abutting relation, coupling-plates lapping the joints between said members and united thereto, cross members united at their ends to said members of the rim, and a stepbearing fixed to said cross members.
2. A derrick bull-wheel comprising a channeled and perforated rim, cross members united to said rim, a step-bearing on the cross members, and adjustable anchoring devices carried by the cross members within the wheelrim.
3. A derrick bull-wheel having a rirn,eross members fixed thereto, a step-bearing fitted between and secured to the cross members,.and plates secured to the cross members and the bearing.
4:. A derrick bull-wheel having an internally-braced rim, astep-bearing, a mast, pairs of upwardly-converging stays disposed at the sides of the mast, the stays of each pair being united with the rim, and means for connecting the stays to the mast.
5. A derrick bull-wheel having an internally-braeed rim, a step-bearing, a boom, and
pairs of upwardly-converging stays united to the rim and the mast and arranged on opposite sides of the mast for the boom to play between one pair of said stays.
6. A derrick bull-wheel having a rim, a stepbearing, a mast stepped in the bearing and having face-blocks, converging stays united to the rim and the mast and disposed in pairs on opposite sides of the mast, and a boom having face-blocks arranged to play between the stays.
7. A derrick bull-wheel having a rim, a mast, and pairs of upwardly-converging stays located on the respective sides of the mast, one stay of the pair being united to the other stay at a point to provide a projecting upper end which is fastened to the mast.
8. A derrick bull-wheel having a rim, cross members fixed thereto, a mast, pairs of upwardly-converging stays united to the cross members, one stay of each pair being united to the other to form a projecting upper end which is fastened to the mast, and other stays attached to said projecting ends and to the rim.
9. A derrick bull-Wheel having a rim, cross members fixed thereto, and converging stays, said stays being united at the lower ends to the cross members and coupled at their upper meeting portions.
10. The combination with a bull-Wheel, of
a mast and a boom each provided with spac IO ing-blocks, pairs of lnclined converglng stays fixed to the Wheel and coupled to one another and to the mast, and other stays each attached to the Wheel and to one stay of each pair.
