JOHN G. BOWLES, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 761,940, dated June 7, 1904.
Application filed February 11, 1904- Ser fil NO- 193,094. (NO I IOClBL) T (LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. BOWLES, of Bos' ton, in the county of Suffolk and State of Mas-- sachusetts, have invented anewand useful 1m'-1 provement in Wrenches; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improve ments in wrenches, and particularly to improvements in gripping wrenches, so called.
One object of the invention is to simplify the adjustment of the jaws of the wrench.
Another object of the invention is to so construct a gripping-wrench that the 'movable jaw while adapted to be firmly held in any position within the limits of its adjustment may be adjusted with relation to the fixed jaw without the use of screw-adjusting means.
Another object of the invention is to so construct a gripping-wrench that a rocking engagement may be had between the handle-jaw and the adjustable jaw.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the description and claims.
The invention consists in the construction of the fixed or handle jaw, its rocker, and in the adjustable jaw and means for clamping the same against the engaging face of the rocker.
The invention also consists in the-fixed or handle jaw, the clamping-frame pivoted thereon, and the adjustable jaw adapted to work through the clamping-frame, together with the means for engaging and holding the adjustable jaw in the desired position. Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the improved Wrench in the operative position. Fig. 2 represents a similar View with part of the clamping-frame broken away, this frame being swung back to the release position. Fig. 3 represents a similar view with the parts in the released positions.
Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
In carrying this invention into practice my object has been to provide a gripping-wrench designed for gripping a pipe, rod, or other article of cylindrical or other shape to hold ment of the shank 19 is prevented.
the same against movement or by means of the handle to exert leverage thereon that the adjustment of the wrench-jaws may be readily effected without the use of screw adjusting and holding devices.
As illustrated in the drawings, in its preferred form 5 represents the handle having the jaw 6, shoulders, as 7, and the concave recess 8, formed in the back of the handle member between the jaw. 6 and the shoulder 9, the jaw 6 having the teeth 10 on its face. In the concavity 8 is mounted to move freely the rockerll, having the circular back 12, and; the upper straight portion having the teeth 13. On the handle member is pivotally mounted the clamping-frame 14:, having the ends and 16, adapted to limit the movement of said frame on its pivot, as shall hereinafter be described, and edges, as 17, adapted .to fit against the shoulders, as 7, of the fixed jaw 6, the leaf-spring 18, secured to the fixed jaw member and bearing against the end 16, being designed to swing the frame 14 toward the shoulder 7.
, Mounted to work in the frame 14 above the rocker 11 is the shank 19, furnished on its under surface with the teeth 20, adapted to engage the teeth. 13 of the rocker and having the jaw 21 furnished with the teeth 22. When the frame is in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the jaw-shank 19 is securely held. by the end 15 of the frame 1 1 in engagement with the teeth 13 of the rocker 11, and as the rocker is held in its pocket or concavity in thehandle. member the longitudinal move- The release of the member 19 from the rocker is effected by swinging backward the frame 14 in any manner to the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, whereby the member 15 of said frame 14 is moved away from the back of the member 19 to permit the disengagement of the teeth of said member 19 from the teeth of the rocker 12, after which the member 19 may be moved longitudinally through said frame, or other methods of operation may be followed at the will of the operator.
Ldo notdesire to limit my invention to the specific structure herein shown, as I am aware that modification of the same may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A wrench comprising a jaw member, a rocker carried by said jaw member and having engaging devices, a second jaw member having a shank furnished with engaging devices adapted to be engaged by the similar devices of the rocker, and means carried by the first of said members and adapted to hold the shank of said second member in engagement with said rocker, and adapted to be moved out of such holding position at times.
2. The combination with a handle having a jaw, a concavity in its upper portion and side shoulders, a rocker having a convex bark working in said concavity, and a straight upper surface furnished with teeth, a frame 0mbracing the handle and pivoted thereto, and a spring designed to swing said frame lorward against the shoulders of the handle, of a jaw having a shank adapted to work in said frame above said rocker at times and having teeth designed to engage the teeth of said rocker, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
