WIRE-WEAVING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,805, dated June 7, 1904. Application filed January 21, 1904. Serial No. 190,049. (No model.)

Be it known that we, ERWIN O. WOOD and FRANK A. HENBnsT, citizens of the United States, residing at Marshfield, in the county vice, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wire-weaving machines such as are employed for applying the stay or filler wires to the linewires of afence, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character which in practice maybe readily manipulated and conveniently handled, and one by which the wires maybe worked close to the ground or wrapped in either direction upon the line-wires.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear side elevation of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a front side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a front end elevation. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view ofthe reel-operating crank.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the main frame, which as herein shown preferably comprises a top bar 2, a bottom bar 3, a rear connecting-bar 4, extended between the rear ends of the top and bottom bar on one side of the' frame, and a pair of intermediate connecting-bars 5extending between the top and bottom bars adjacent to the longitudinal center of the latter, these intermediate bars being oppositely disposed and in transverse spaced relation, as at 6, for the purpose which will hereinafter appear. Mounted for rotation in the forward portion of the frame in advance of the intermediate bars 5 is a wheel or disk 7, constituting the weaving member of the device, said wheel being provided with a radial slot 8, extending from its center outward and having its periphery, which travels in suitable grooves or ways formed in the inner faces of bars 2 and 3, provided with teeth 9, designed to project into the space 6 between the bars 5. Formed or otherwise provided upon the side faces of the wheel 7 are oppositely-disposed circular tracks or ways 10,` inset from the peripheral teeth 9 and designed to accommodate bearing or guide rollers 11, journaled for rotation in suitable bearing-jaws 12, provided at the forward ends of bars 2 and 3, the bearing-jaw on the rear side of the machine being extended downwardly and outwardly to produce a guide-arm 13, the lower edge of which registers with the slot 8 when the weaving member is at rest. There is also carried by the wheel 7 adjacent to the outer end and upon opposite sides of the slot 8 a pair of forwardly-projecting guide members or extensions 14, the outer ends of which are reversely and outwardly curved from the slot, whereby a line-wire 15 may be readily guided to position within the slot, adjacent to the rear end of which there is formed through the disk a wire-receiving opening or perforation 16, through which the strand 0r filler wire 17 passes and in its passage bears or travels upon an antifriction-roller 18, journaled for rotation near the edge of the opening.
Mounted for rotation in the rear portion of the frame and journaled upon a suitable pintle 19, projecting from bar 4, is a wheel or disk 20, constituting the driving member and having its periphery provided with teeth 21, which mesh with the teeth 9 through the space 6. This member, to which is attached a suitable operating-crank 22, is provided upon its rear vform in side elevation and having a notch or socket 24 formed in its outer edge adjacent to its center for the purpose which will presently appear.
Attached to the upper frame-bar 2 is a handle 25, through which a rod or plunger 26 extends and is pivotally connected at its lower end with a locking member or latch 27, in turn pivoted to the rear face of the bar 2, the free end of the latch being designed for engagement with the socket 24, into engagement with which it is normally maintained by a spring 28, seated in a suitable socket in the handle and bear-img` at its ends upon shoulders formed on the latter and the plunger-rod, as herein shown. When the latch is in engage- IOO ment with the socket, the driving and weaving members will be fixed against rotation with the slot 8 in the latter in alinement with the guide-arm 13. Attention is here directed to the fact that the ends of the cam 23 are inwardly curved, whereby the engaging end of the latch will automatically ride upward upon the cam during the rotation of the wheel and will upon reaching the socket 24 be thrown automatically into engagement therewith through the medium of the spring 28, it being apparent that the latch may be readily7 released by downward pressure upon the upper end of the plunger, which for this purpose projects slightly above the end of the handle.
Projecting outward and slightly rearward from the front side face of the weaving member or disk 7 is a post or standard 29, carrying at its outer end a right-angularly-disposed shaft or pintle 30, on which is journaled for rotation a reel 31, designed to carry the filling-wire, which is fed from said reel through the opening 16 for application to the line-wire 15, as heretofore stated. Adjustably mounted upon the outer end of the shaft 30 is a collar or stop 32, between which and the adjacent end of the reel a tension-spring 33 is disposed, the collar being fixed upon the shaft by a setscrew. It is obvious from this arrangement that by moving the collar toward or from the reel the spring will be caused to exert a greater or lesser tension upon the latter for varying the speed of rotation of the reel, and consequently the tension on the filler-wire as fed therefrom. For rotating' the reel to wind the wire thereon there is provided a crank 34, preferably of the form herein shown and adapted for ready detachable engagement with studs 35, projecting from the outer head of the reel, the inner arm of the crank having suitable lateral sockets for the reception of the studs. It may here be observed that when the latch 27 brings the parts of the device to rest, as heretofore explained, the reel will lie in proper position for engagement and operation by the crank 34.
In operation the machine will be engaged with the linewire 15 by entering the latter in the slot 8, which will bring said wire into proper position for receiving the filler-wire. rlhe parts being in this position, the latch is manipulated for releasing the driving-wheel, and the latter is rotated through the medium of crank 22, each .rotation of the drive-wheel producing a wrap or coil of the filler-wire upon the line-wire. This ceiling operation of the wire is automatically determined by the latch, which automatically moves into engagement with the notch and eii'ects a stoppage of the machine at the completion of each revolution of the drive-wheel. As before explained, the slot S will at each such stoppage of the machine be in position for removal of the latter from the line-wire. Attention is here directed to the fact that the device may be worked upon the bottom line-wire when the latter lies close to theground, and, further, that the device may be moved into engagement with the line-wires from either side, thereby permitting of the filler-wires being alternately coiled in opposite directions, if so desired.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple inexpensive device is produced which in practice will eiiiciently perform its flinctions to the attainment of the ends in view; but it is to be understood that minor changes may be made in the details herein set forth without departing from the spirit or scope o f the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed isw l. rl`he combination with a frame having a guideway, of a rotary disk having l earing in the guideway and provided with a radial slot adapted to receive a line-wire, guide-wheels sustained by the frame, tracks provided on the disk for the accommodation of the guidewheels, a guide-opening provided in the disk adjacent to the slot for the reception ol a filler-wire, and means for rotating thedisk to coil one wire upon the other.
2. The combination with al frame having a guideway, of a rotary disk having bearii'lg in the guideway and provided with a radial slot designed to receive a line-wire, rotary guidewheels sustained by the frame, tracks provided on the disk for the accommodation of the guide-wheels, a guide-opening provided in the disk adjacent to the slot for the recel tion of a iillenwire, means for rotating the disk to coil one wire upon the other, and means for automatically arresting rotation of the disk at the completion of each coil.
