PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. TAYLOR, OF FRENCH CAMP, MISSISSIPPI.
SlDE-HARROW BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,725, dated June '7, 1904.
Application filed March SI, 1904-.-
To all whom; it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at French Mississippi, have invented a new and useful 1 Side-Harrow Brace, of which the following is".
a specification. The invention relates to improvements in side harrows.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of that class of side harrows which are provided with approximately triangular frames and in which the harrow-teeth are disposed transversely of the harrow at the back of the frame and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device adapted. to be readily applied to such harrows and capable of effectually preventing the rear transverse portion of the frame from bending upward or backward, whereby the harrow-teeth are prevented from sagging and are rigidly maintained in proper position.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a side harrow constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the adjustable brace.
Like numerals ofreference designate cor; responding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates an approximately triangular frame. provided with sides2 and 3, arranged at an angle to each other. The rear portion of the triangular frame is composed of two bars or pieces 4 and 5, formed integral with the sides and overlapped and spaced apart, as
clearly shown in Fig. 1; but the harrow-frame may be constructed in any other desired man- Serial No. 200,926. (No model.)
' nor, as willbereadily understood. The harrow-teeth 6 are arranged at the back of the frame between the bars or members 4: and 5 and are secured to "the same by means of clamping-plates? and clips 8.
In order to hold the harrow-teeth firmly in proper position and toprevent the same from sagging when the harrow is subjected to heavy strain, the harrow-frame is provided with a central longitudinal brace 9, arranged approximately in line with the draft and provided at its front end with a hook 10 and having an eye 11 at its rear end. The eye 11, which is located contiguous to the frame, is arranged 'on the shank of the center tooth of the harrow. The hook of the front end of the brace; engages an eye or opening 12 of an approximately triangular plate 13, which is arranged between the front ends of the sides 2 and 3 of the harrow-frame and which is secured to the same by means of the fastening devices 14 for securing the side bars together and for attaching the clevis 15 to the same. The plate depends below the lower edges of the side bars, and the adjustable brace, which is located beneath the frame, is composed of two sections or rods having inner threaded ends 16 for engagement with aturnbuckle 17. The turnbuckle is provided with right and left hand threads in the usual manner, and it is adapted to be rotated to tighten the brace. The brace is adapted to tighten an old harrow and when applied to a new one will effectually prevent the teeth from sagging, and the harrow is thereby enabled to do more effective work.
The harrow is provided with handle-bars 18,
connected at their rear portions by a trans-- verse bar 19 and secured at their front portions to front and rear arms 20 and 21 of different lengths. The front arms 20, which are shorter than the rear arms 21, are formed integral with a transverse bar 22, which is clipped to the side bars 2 and f the harrowframe and which stiffens and braces the same.
Having thus fully described my invention,
.what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a harrow, the combination wlth an approxlmately triangular harrow-frame having transversely disposed harrow teeth at the back, of a plate secured between the front ends of the sides of the frame and projecting therefrom, said plate being provided with an eye, and a longitudinal brace arranged approximately in line With the draft and provided at its front end with a hook for engaging the eye of the plate and having an eye at its rear end arranged on the shank of an intermediate 10 tooth, said brace being composed of sections having an adjustable connection, whereby the sections may be placed under tension, substantially as described.
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
