SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 761,718, dated June 7, 1904. Application filed September 21, 19.05%. Serial No. 174,060. (No model.)
To all whom .it may concern;
Be it known that I, -MIGHEL SoHAAoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,
vin the county of Cook and State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Heaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in a water-heater, the object being to provide a cheap eflicient device of this character; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed. 1
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a heater constructed in accordance with my invention, taken on the line 1 l of Fig. 2. Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse sections of the same on the lines 2 2 and 3 3, respectively, of Fig. 1. Fig. et is a fragmentary detail section, on an enlarged scale, showing the joints between the various sections of my heater.
In the construction ofwater-heaters it is essential to provide a very large heatingsurface in proportion to the volume of water and to provide for easy and rapid circulation of To this end, and in order to render the construction of a water-heater of any desired capacity as cheap as possible without affecting its efliciency, I construct my heater mainly of i-ahplurality of annular sections A, which are cast and correspond exactly with one another. Each of said sections or units A, as Ishall hereinafter term them, consists, substantially, of two concentric an nular water-chambers B and O, connected with each other at regular intervals at their units A are preferably constructed so that the radial chambers D are of an odd number, preferably five, as herein shown, and the openings F and G, through which said units communicate with each other, are set at diametbustion will be obliged to take a Zigzag course, and the greater part of the contained heat will be absorbed by the water. The openings F in the upper wall of each unit are bordered j by two concentric flanges H, between which packingI is contained and the annular flanges J, surrounding the openings G in the lower wall of the next succeeding unit, are received, thereby forming water-tight joints'between said units.
The upper and lowermost units K and L are modified in construction, said lowermost unit L consisting only of a single annular waterchamber M, corresponding insize and shape with the chambers B of the units A and communicating with the latter, said chamber M being provided at its upper. end with radial water-chambers N, between which are openings corresponding with the vertical flues E, said water-chambers N being adapted to rest upon the upper wall 0 of the water-jacket P of the fire-pot in the base. supporting said units.
In the uppermost unit K the water-chambers B and O are connected by the annular water-chamber Q, the vertical flues E being omitted. At one point said annular flue Q is providedwith a passage for the reception of a flue R, connecting the heater with the chimney-flue S, said flue B being provided with a damper T. An opening is also provided through the annular flue B for the reception of the flue U, connecting with the central passage V of an annular water-chamber W, mounted adjacent said units and inclosed in the lower end of said chimney-flue, said passage V forming a downdraft-flue connecting ing through said flue V will pass upwardly through the annular space X between the outer wall of said chamber W and the wall of the chimney-flue S.
The central passage Y in the units A, K, and L forms a storage or feed chamber for fuel to be fed to the fire-pot and is covered by the cover Z. The said central passage Y and the outer and upper walls of the heater are lined with a non-conducting material, such as asbestos, to prevent radiation. The said heater is connected with the water-supply pipe a by means of the pipe 6, entering the waterjacket N of the fire-pot, so that the cold water is admitted at the point subjected to the greatest heat, and by means of a pipe 0, entering the lower end of the annular chamber W. The latter is connected by pipes (Z and c with the lowermost unit A and the unit K, respectively, and the latter is connected by means of the pipe f with the service-pipes of the building or with a storage-tank for the hot water. The said water-jacket N is connected with the radial chambers of the unit L in the same manner as the units A are connected with each other, and is further connected with the central chamber of said unit L by means of a pipe In order to hold said units together and compress the packingsin the joints between the same, the unit K and the base are provided with radial lugs 9, between which the rods /b are received, which are threaded at their ends to receive nuts in the usual manner, the latter engaging said lugs to draw said units K and Ltoward each other. Heaters of various capacity can obviously be constructed as above by simply'varying the number of said units A, while the latter by reason of being cast from the same pattern and being comparatively light and small are readily transported and fitted together, thereby rendering the entire structure comparatively cheap. A test has demonstrated its great efiieiency, as when the damper T is closed, so that the products of combustion are forced to pass downwardly through the flue V, so much of their heat is absorbed as to enable the hand to be placed on the chimney-flue S without discomfort.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a water-heater, the combination with a heating-chamber and a chimney-flue, of a plurality of water-receiving units each comprising two concentric annular chambers connected at regular intervals by means oi radial chambers of less height, annular lines between said concentric water-chambers, and vertical fines between said radial chambers, said units being relatively so mounted that the radial chambers of each unit lie in vertical alinement with the vertical lines of the next adjacent unit, water connections between said units, and an upper unit consisting of an annular inverted U-shaped chamber provided with a vertical and a horizontal flue-opening for connecting said annular and vertical lines of said first-named units with said chimneyflue.
2. In a water-heater, a unit conn'n'ising two concentric annular water-chambers and radial chambers of less depth connecting said annnla r chambers, vertical lines interposed between said radial chambers, openings in the upper and lower walls of said annular chambers surrounded by annular flanges, said flanges snrrounding the openings in the upper wall of said unit being adapted to interlit with the flanges surrounding the openings in the lower wall of the next higher unit, and packing in terposed between said flanges and around said openings.
3. In a water-heater, the combination with a fire-pot, of a plurality of separate annular water-chambers superimposed above said the pot and connected with each other and with the water-service pipes oi the lmilding, ammlar fiues interposed between said water-chambers, vertical lines relatively oii'set and connecting said annular lines, a chimney-line, an annular water-ehamber interposed therein, a flue connecting said chimney-flue below said annular water-chamber therein with the upper end of said main water-heater, a line connecting the latter with said chimney-flue above said water-chamber therein, and a damper interposed in said last-named connection.
