VEHICLE AIR-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming ,part of Letters Patent No. 761,618, dated May 31, 1904. Application filed January 23, 1903 Serial N0. 140,241. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. WALTER, a-
citizen of theUnited States,residing at Aurora,
' specially designed for railway use and for roadvehicles; and it consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts with the View of simplifying, economizing, and otherwise improving the operation of apparatus of this class. V r i The nature, characteristic features, and scope of the invention will be more clearly apparent from the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming apart hereof, wherein Figure 1 is a top view, partly in section, of an air-brake apparatus embodying features of the invention, the parts being shown-in their general operative relation with the pump in the act of compressing and storing air. The yoke d, which encircles the eccentric, carries one end of' a pump-rod e, the other end of said rod being pivoted or otherwise movably secured to a piston-rod f, as at 0, so that said pump-rod may follow or be shifted with the eccentric. The piston-rod f carries a piston f, arranged to be reciprocated in a cylinder g, the interior of said cylinder being divided by a partition 9 into a pumping or compressing cylinder h, in which the pistOn'operates, and an air-reservoir It. r

Means are provided for shifting the pumpfrod and eccentric or throwing them out of operative relation with the pump at a prede termined momentvl'. a, when sufiicient air has been compressed or stored in the reservoir 71. Said means comprise a spring Z, suitably mounted in a wall of the air-reservoir and arranged to be adjusted to any predetermined pressure by means of set-screws Z. The spring Z is mounted in relation to a piston m, whose rod on is attached to a shifting-lever n, operatively connected with the pump-rod e, for example, by means of a sleeve n. It will thus be observed that when the pressure in the reservoir exceeds that at which the spring Z has been adjusted the piston m will be shifted and will cause the rod or to shift the pump-rod c, and with it the eccentric c, to an inoperative position in respect to the pump. It will likewise be apparent that when the pressure in the reservoir is relieved the spring Z will solicit the piston m to'its former position, thereby returning the shifting-rod n and its connected parts to their normal positions.
The brake-cylinder is designated at 0, and it is provided with the complemental piston and rod 0' 0 the latter carrying the usual and stores fair at each stroke forward and back- I brake-beamp. A spring 0 or the equivalent thereof tends to hold the brake-beam away from the wheels when the brake is not in use. A'pipe q affords communication'between the reservoir h and the brake-cylinder, and said pipe is provided at some intermediate point with valve g, which is arranged to be operated by a disk or member 1*, which also operates the relief-valve s of the brake-cylinder.

Another slight modification to which attention may be called is the link 0 which is pivoted to a stationary part of the pump-cylinder and constitutes the movable connection between the pump-rod and the pump-cylinder piston.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains that modifications may be made in details without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Hence 1 do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinabove described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but,
Having described the nature and object of the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The'combination in an air-brake apparatus for vehicles, of a brake-cylinder, its piston and piston-rod, an air-reservoir and an aircompressing cylinder integral together, and a valved partition between them, a pipe leading from the reservoir to the brake-cylinder, and a pipe leading from the compressing-cylinder into the reservoir, and means to receive air into the cylinder and compress it,-substantially as described.
2. The combination in an air-brake'apparatus for vehicles, of a brake-cylinder, its piston and piston-rod, an air-reservoir and an aircompressing cylinder integral together, and avalved partition between them, a pipe leading from the reservoir to the brake-cylinder and a pipe leading from the compressing-cylinder into the reservoir, a spring-piston and its stem in the side of the reservoir, a pivoted lever having one end in engagement with said stem, the air-compressing piston, its rod, and its hinged connecting-rod, and a sleeve carried by the pivoted lever, substantially as described.
3. The combination in an air-brake apparatus for vehicles, of a brake-cylinder having a relief-valve in one end, an air-reservoir and an air-compressin g cylinder integral together, and a valved partition between them, a pipe leading from the reservoir to the brake-cylinder, a valve upon said pipe, adisk carrying the stem of said valve and also the stem of the relief-valve of the brake-cylinder, and means to operate said disk and valves, substantially as described.
