CURTAIN-POLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 761,508, dated May 31, 1904.
I i i I l Application filed February 3, 1904f Serial N0, 191,786. (N0 model.) i I of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Curtain-Pole, of which full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates tocurtain-rods, curtain-poles, and similar fixtures; and its object is to provide a new and improved means for removably fastening the balls, knobs,'or like devices to the, ends of the pole, at the same time reinforcing or strengthening the balls,
more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims. a
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement, part of one of the knobs being broken out. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the improvement on the line 2 2 in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is atransverse section of the same on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the clamping-disk; and Fig. 5 is a like view of a modified form of clamping-disk, parts being broken out.
The rod, tube, pole, or like fixture A is provided at its ends with hollow knobs or balls B B, preferably made of metal and each constructed of sections B and B the edges of which are flanged and interlocked, as plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The inner section B of each knob or ball B is provided with a centrally-apertured bearing B for the fixture A, and between the interlocked edges of the sections B and B is loosely held a transverselyextending disk 0, contained within the knob or ball and free to expand transversely for the purpose hereinafter more fully described.
Thedisk-C is preferably made of spring metal and is formed with a hub C, extending outwardly in longitudinal alinement with the bearing B for the hub to bear on the surface of the fixture A, as plainly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The disk 0 is provided with a slit C preferably arranged radially, so as to allow the disk to open or expand in a transverse direction when pushing the knob or ball to the end of the fixture A, so that the bearing B as well as the hub C, bears on the peripheral face of thefixture A. v s
In practice the opening of the hub C is slightly less in diameter than the diameter of the fixture A, so that when the ball-or knob is placed imposition on the end of the fixture,
then the disk opens up for engaging the hub C with the fixture A and for the hub to bear with sufiicient force on the said fixture by its own resiliency to securely hold the ball or knob in position on the fixture. As illustrated in Figs. 2, 4, and 5, the hub C is somewhat in the shape of the frustum of a cone and may be so formed as to bear with more or less surface on the surface of the fixture A-that is, the hub C may have only alined contact with the fixture A when forming the hub, as shown in Fig. 5, or more of the inner surface of the hub may engage the fixture, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4.
When the knob or ball B is placed in position on the fixture A as described and the disk C opens up owing to its slit C then the peripheral edge of the disk bears against the inner surface of one of the interlocked edges of the sections B and B so that the disk forms a reinforce for the said interlocked edges to prevent inward bending or bending of the said interlocked edges.
By the arrangement described the ball or knob B can be readily removed whenever it is desired to do so by theoperator exerting an outward pull on the knob or ball to slide the hub C and the bearing B? off the end 0 vided with a split hub having a bore, the split in the hub extending longitudinally from end to end of the hub and the split in the disk extending from the hubsplit to the peripheral edge of the disk.
2. A curtain-pole comprising a tube or rod, a knob for attachment to the said tube or rod, and a split disk within the said knob and provided with a split hub, the split in the hub extending longitudinally from end to end of the hub and the split in the disk extending from the hub-split to the peripheral edge of the disk, the bore of the hub being somewhat less in diameter than the said tube or rod and the said disk and hub being capable of expanding for the passage of the tube or rod through the bore of the hub, to clamp the tube or red and thereby hold the knob against removal from the tube or rod.
3. A curtain-pole comprising a tube or rod,
a knob for attachment to the said tube or red and made in sections, having their adjacent edges locked together, and a split disk having a hub split longitudinally and capable of expanding and clamping the said tube or rod, the peripheral edge of the said disk extending loosely between the said interlocked edges of the knob, and the said disk being capable of expanding transversely, and when expanded forming a reinforce for the said interlocked 3 edges of the knob, as set forth.
4. Aball or knob for attachment to curtain poles, rods and the like, consisting of two sections having their adjacent edges interlocked, and a split disk having a hub split longitudinally, to bear upon the said pole, rod or the like and hold it removably thereon, the edge of the disk extending and being capable of expanding, between the said interlocked edges, as set forth.
5. A hollow ball or knob for attachment to curtain poles, rods and the like, provided in its interior with a transversely-disposed split disk having a split hub, the said split hub having a bore, and the split.in the hub extending longitudinally from one end of the hub to the other and the split in the disk extending from the split of the hub to the peripheral edge of the disk, to allow the disk and its hub to expand transversely.
