of which the'following is a specification.
My invention has relation to a combined trunnion and sash-lockfor panels or window sashes adapted to be moved in grooves formed in cars to open or close the same.
Prior to my invention in cars which are convertible or sem1convertiblethat 1s, as to the former, where the side of thecar between 1 the posts is adapted to be wholly opened or closed, or as to the latter, partly open or closed the movable sashes or panels have been adapted to be moved up and down in grooves formed in or upon the sides of the posts or'other convenient parts of the car.
The sashes have been in prior practice, so far as I-know, bodily guided in the groove onthe one hand, or, on the other hand, trunnions or pintles have'been formed on the sides of the panel or sash which engage a groove and in some instances a compound groove consisting of a wider upper and a narrow base-groove located at the bottom of the wider groove and a panel or sash frame provided with pintles or trunnions, the latter working in the smaller basegroove, the sides of the frame bemg adapted to move in wholly or partly the upper or wider groove, has been employed. In none of these instances, so far as I know, has there been, on the onehand, any provision made for utilizing these pintles or trunnions as a means for con jointly guiding the panel or sash in the grooves and for locking or supporting the same in their position of elevation or depression, or,

operated both longitudinally and transversely 5 of the groove and as to one phase of my invention to engage a depression or equivalent means located in the groove at predetermined points to lockor'support the panel or sash at desired points of elevationor depression, or,
as to another phase, to free the panel or sash from the groove by sliding the bolt. My invention therefore resides in the novel construction and combination-of parts hereinafter described,,and further pointed out in the claims.

I have illustrated my invention in eonnection'with a conventiohally-constructed semiconvertible car, and for the purpose of illustration of my invention it is not necessary that the entire means for closing the car side be illustrated, since my invention may be em-, ployed either with what is called a. sash- 8 5 carrying window-glass or a base-panel with any of the'car side opening or closing in strumentalities employed in car structures.
In the drawings, l'illustrates a sash comprising the side bars 2 and top and bottom 9 cross-bars 3 4 and'glass 5, and 6 an upper sash similarly formed of sidebars and top and bot tom cross-bars, (andjthe two sash-sections may be provided withnfeans for automatically .engaging each'other and for disengagement from each other while being raised or lowered,) as illustrated in an application for patent filed by Brill and Bucknam onthe first day of Ffib'.
ruary, 1901, Serial No. 45,545, to which cross reference is here made for a suitable construction in which my invention is employed.
At 7 is the side of the car (both sides being constructed alike) comprising the usual outer longitudinal sills 8 and side posts or stanchions 9, extending upwardly from the sill.-
The form of car illustrated herein is of the semiconvertible typethat is to say, it has a fixed panel 10 constructed, as desired, extending upwardly along the car side from the sill 8 to the side openings, upon the rail 11 of which the lower sash 1 is adapted to rest.
In the construction illustrated in Figs. 3, 4:, 5, 6 the posts are provided with a groove (so far as the sashes are concerned) leading from the rail 11 upwardly, as desired, or as recited in said application, and this groove may actually comprise two grooves 12 13, the upper or wider one, 13, and the lower or base groove, 12, or, as in Figs. 1 and 2, a single groove, the counterpart of 12 in Figs. 3, 4:, 5, and 6.
v The upper sash may be provided with trunnions and the upper portion of the lower sash also provided with trunnions 14 on each side bar 2 at the upper corners to engage the groove 12. In the structure herein illustrated I have applied my invention to the lower part of the sash; but its application may be further multiplied.
At 15 is the combined sash-lock and trunnion. It consists in the embodiment herein illustrated of a casing 16, having an extension 17 let into the edge of the sash-bar 2, (and preferably applied at both sides of the sash,) and having its side plate 18 flush with the edge of the sash-bar, the casing having an upward extension 19 secured to the sash-frame and an inward extension 20 secured to the sash-frame and having a hand-pull 21, and the lower extension 22 secured to the base of the sash-frame.
The inside of the casing is provided" with an apertured lug 23, projecting from the casing lock-plate 24, and the plate 18 of the inset extension 17 is likewise apertured at 25 to permit a bolt 26 (which constitutes a trunnion or pintle) of the lock to be moved longitudinally in the casing, the plate 18 of the inset and the lug 23 forming a guide therefor. The shank 27 of the bolt is provided with an outwardly-extending dog 28, and between the dog and the lug 23 and around the bolt-shank is a coil-spring 29, adapted to oppose the inward extension of the bolt.
At 30 is a hand-lever pivoted in the casing upon a pin 31 and having a downwardly-extending lug 32. At 33 is a link pivoted in the casing upon the pin 34: and having a tooth 35, adapted to engage the lug 32 on the lever 30, and a tongue 36, adapted to engage the dog 28.
The bolt 26 is adapted and arranged in accordance with one feature of my invention to be'moved in against the stress of the spring for a portion only of its length, so that a substantial portion of the part projecting from the side of the sash will remain in the groove 12 and act as a trunnion for guiding the sash up and down.
Should it be desired to employ my invention in connection with a single groove, as 12, formed flush with the face of the posts, as in Figs. 1 and 2, between which the sash moves, so that the sash can be readily removed or swung in or out, the posts of the lock can be so adjusted that the bolt may be entirely reciprocated free from the groove so as to release the sash from the same. In this way my invention may be utilized as a means for readily attaching or detaching sashes or panels from the sides of the car, since such an application of my invention would only require a multiplication of the sash-locks at the desired points, say, at the four corners, the bolt 26 or bolts (as the case may be) acting always as the guiding means for the sash in the groove 12 (a groove) should it be desired to raise or lower the sash. My invention also contemplates using the bolt 26 conjointly as a guidetrunnion and lock. To accomplish this, I may employ the following construction.
At predetermined points along the groove 12 and in its base depressions 37 are formed, into which the head of the bolt 26 may be projected by the spring 29, so as to lock the sash in its point of adjustment up or down wherever these depressions may be located, and these depressions may be either holes bored in the base of the groove or be formed as a part of the plate 38 let into the base of the groove or otherwise formed, as desired. \Vhen used as a combined guide-pintle and lock, the inward projection of the bolt is limited to just sufficient to cause it to free itself from the holes 37 or steps, &c., the spring 29 keeping it pressed outward. As will now be apparent, it will be immaterial whether the side bars of the sash enter within or engage a groove 13, which it may do in some of the structures in which my invention may be employed.
1 am aware that it is not new to provide a sash with a lock carrying a longitudinallymovable bolt adapted to engage holes or depressions or steps in the window-frame or car in which latter a groove has been formed to guide the sash up and down; but so far as I know the bolt or looking instruinentality of the lock did or does not enter in the guidinggroove and form the guide for the sash nor conjointly operate both as a sash-guide and as alock. Viewed in its broad aspect, therefore, my invention is susceptible of considerable modification without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a car, the combination with side posts having longitudinal grooves therein, of a sash adapted to slide between said posts and provided with fixed and locking pintles adapted at all times to remain in the said grooves and be operated longitudinally thereof, thereby forming guide bearings for the sash, and means for operating said locking-pintle a limited distance'transversely of the sash for unlocking the same.
2. In a car, the combination with side posts having longitudinal grooves therein, of sashes adapted to slide between said posts and pro vided with fixed pintles at one end thereof engaging said grooves, locking-pintles, mounted on the other end of said sashes, alsoengaging said grooves and together with said fixed pintles adapted at all times to remain in and be operated longitudinally thereof, forming guide-bearings for said sash, and means for operating said locking-pintles a limited distance transversely of said grooves.
3. In a car, the combination with side posts having longitudinal, grooves and depressions at intervals therein, provided with fixed pintles at one end thereof engaging said grooves, locking-pintles, mounted on the other end of said sashes, engaging said grooves and depressions, and together with the fixed pintles adapted at all times to remain in and be operated longitudinally of said grooves, forming guide-bearings for the sash, and means for operating said locking-pintles a limited distance transversely of said grooves and out of engagement with said depressions,
4. In a car, the combination with side posts having longitudinal grooves and depressions located at intervals therein, of sashes adapted toslide between said posts provided with fixed pintles at one end thereof engaging said grooves, spring operated locking pintles mounted on the other end of said sashes, projecting in said grooves and normally engaging said depressions, the said fixed and locking pintles adapted at all times to remain in said grooves, thereby forming guide-bearings for the sashes, and means engaging said locking-pintle for withdrawing the same out ofengagement with said depressions.
5. In a car, the combination with the grooved side posts, of sashes adapted to slidebetween said posts,'a casing secured upon said sash, a trunnion or pintle carried by said casing adapted to'enter said grooved side posts, a stationary handle upon said casing, and a pivoted lever immediately above said handle adapted to withdraw said trunnion or pintle.
6. In a car the combination with the side posts having grooves provided with depressions located at intervals therein; of sashes adapted to slide between said posts, a casing secured to said sashes, a trunnion or pintle carried by said casing adapted to enter said grooves and depressions, a stationary handle carried by said casing, means normally tending to retain said trunnion in said depression posts having grooves provided with depressions located at intervals therein; of sashes I adapted to slide between said posts, a casing secured to each of said sashes, a trunnion or pintlecarried by said casing adapted to enter said grooves and depressions, a stationary handle carried by said casing, means normally ten'ding to retain said trunnion in said depres-/ sion and groove, a lever located opposite said handle, and means interposed between said lever and trunnion or pintle, whereby depression of said lever will withdraw said trunnion or pintle. 1

In a car, the combination with the side posts having grooves provided with depres- 8O sions located at intervals therein; of sashes adapted to slide between said posts, a casing secured to each of saidsashes, a trunnion or pintle carried by said casing adapted to enter said grooves and depressions, a stationary 5 handle carried by said casing, means normally tending to retain said trunnion in said depres- 810D and groove, a lever located opposite said handle, and a pivoted link interposed between said lever and trunnion or pintle, whereby de- 9 pression of said lever will withdraw said trunnion or pintle. v

In a car, the combination with the grooved side posts; of a sash adapted to fit between each of said posts, a casing carried upon the lower posts defining openings in the sides of the car, and longltudmal grooves formedln the opposing faces of said side posts; of asash movable freely between the opposing faces of said side, posts, and transversely-movable trunnions extending laterally from the edges of said sash and adapted to project into and re- -main at all times in engagement with said grooves in the side posts to retain said sash I between said side posts and to form guides for said sash during the raising and lowering of the same, and depressions formed at intervals in said side posts at'the base of said grooves, into which said niovable trunnions are adapted to be projected to lock said sash between said posts.
