PATENT OFFICE.
JOSHUA S. TOWLE, OF REDWOOD FALLS, MINNESOTA.
RElN-GUARD ATTACHMENT FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,270, dated May 31, 1904.
Application filed October 19, 1903. Serial No. 177,672; (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSHUA S. TowLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Redwood Falls, in the county of Redwood and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Rein-Guard Attachment to Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments to vehicles to prevent the driving-reins becoming entangled with the whiifletrees, and has for its object to simplify and improve devices of this character and produce an attachment which may be readily adjusted to various sizes of vehicles.
The invention consists in certain novel fea-' tures of construction, as hereinafter shown and described, and specified in the claim.
In the drawings illustrative of the invention, in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improvement applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the improved device applied.
The improved device consists of two rods 11, formed with eyes 12 13 for connection to the pivot-bolts 14 15 by which the swingletrees 16 17 are united to the doubletree 18, as shown. The rods 10 11 are provided, respectively, with right-angled bends 19 20, so that when set in position with the free ends of the rods toward each other and in longitudinal alinement they will lie forward of the swingletrees and doubletree, as shown. EX- tending between the pivot-bolts 14 15 and slidably engaging free bent ends of the rods 10 11 is a tubular member 21 and forming an adjustable coupling means for the rods. By this simple means a very complete and eflicient guard is provided which prevents the driving-reins from becoming entangled in the inner ends of the whiffietrees and which may be quickly attached to any size of vehicle or quicklytransferred from one vehicle to another.
The free ends of the rods 10 11 will project far enough into the tubular member 21 to afford ample support thereto and prevent its displacement no matter how severely the parts may be agitated or thrown about.
The tubular member may be a section of ordinary gas or similar piping, but may be a section of tubing especially formed for the purpose and may be plated or otherwise coated or ornamented, as required.
I claim an especial advantage by forming the bends 19 in the rods 10 11 whereby the guard is thrown forwardly of the swingletrees and doubletrees, as the reins are thus more effectually prevented from being caught under the inner ends of the whiffletrees.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is I The combination with a doubletree having spaced swingletrees pivoted thereto, of a pair of rods pivotally mounted upon the pivoted portions of said swingletrees and bent so as to present a portion lying parallel with the doubletree but in front of and above said doubletree, and a tubular member slidably engaging the free ends of said rods.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
* JOSHUA S. TOWLE.
