FRUIT-JAR WRENCH.-

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,180, dated May 31, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LUOIEN RAwDoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Windsor, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar Wrench es; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in wrenches for applying and removing the screw caps or covers of fruit-jars.

.The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is so constructed as to enable the operator to obtain a firm grip showing in full and broken lines the operation of the gripping-lever, and Fig. 4 is a crosssection on the line 4 4 of Fig. 8.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents the handle of the wrench, which is provided at its forward end with a gripping-ring 2, adapted to receive or embrace the cap or cover of the jar. This ring 2 is provided at its front with an inwardly-projecting bearing-lip 3, which is designed to engage the threads of the cap to retain the ring in engagement therewith, and at the rear of the ring is a downwardlyprojecting presser-flange 4. The purpose of this flange is to form an auxiliary rear bearing to maintain the ring in engagement with the cap, and it also forms a smoothing or pressing element by which the rim edge of the cap when mutilated or bent out of shape may be smoothed out and restored to true cylindrical form by turning the ring to bring the flange in contact therewith and oscillating the wrench to move the flange over the mutilated surface. Pivoted by a stud or rivet 5 to the handle in rear of the ring is a grippinglever 6'. This lever 6 is centrally pivoted and is provided at its opposite ends with impinging members 7 8. When it is desired to screw a hard-turning cap upon a jar, the lever is turned so as to bring one of the said gripping members into engagement with the rim of the cap and is held in such position by the forefinger of the operator pressing the opposite arm of the lever rearwardly. On the other hand, when it is desired to unscrew the cap, the other gripping member of the lever is brought into position to grip the cap bya reverse movement of the lever, and the thumb of the operator is employed upon the opposite ELIIIlxtO hold the lever in engagement. It will thus be seen that the lever makes provision for the secure gripping of the cap, thus preventing the wrench from slipping thereon and enabling the cap to be quickly turned on or off.

. From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A fruit-jar wrench comprising a handle provided with a ring gripper having bearing members, and a reversibly adjustable and operating lever provided at its opposite ends with gripping-faces either adapted to engage the cap and lock the ring thereto, whereby the device may be used with caps having right and left hand threads.

2. A fruit-jar wrench comprising a handle having a ring-shaped gripper provided at front and rear with gripping projections, one of said projections being adapted to serve for smoothing out the mutilated portions of a jar-cap,

i and a gripping-lever fulcrumed intermediately 10 the latter adapted to be engaged by the hand of the operator to retain the gripping member in engagement, substantially as described.
