PATENT OFFICE.
PARKER M. WILLIAMS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE J. W. REEDY ELEVATOR MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLI- NOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
DRUM FOR ELEVATOR-CABLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,120, dated May 31, 1904..
Application filed March 10, 1903. Renewed vem r 16, 1903. Serial No. 181,411. (No model.)
10 all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, PARKER M. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi- 5 nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drums for Elevator-Cables, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates more particularly to I drums for use in connection with overhead electric elevators, wherein the hoisting-machine is usuallyset directly over the hatchway and in connection with which four cables are ordinarily employed and wound around I said drum, while two other cables are employed for the counterbalance-weight on the car and pass around extra sheaves; and the object of my invention is to simplify this system of sheaves and drum whereby they may be formed integrally and used on the same shaft.
With these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of novelty by which the said object and certain other objects here- 5 inafter appearing are attained, all as fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the said drawings, Figure l is a diagram- 3 matio view of the cables, drums, and sheaves in elevation; and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, the cables being omitted.
In electric elevators of modern construction, in which the hoisting-machine is placed directly over the hatchway, it is customary to employ six cables, two of which are employed on each end ofa hoisting-drum, which is scored or provided with grooves inclined to the right and to the left, while the remaining two ca- 4 bles are attached to and take up the counterbalance-weight on the car and pass over two sheaves having straight grooves in which the cables run, respectively. In carrying out my invention I dispense with the said sheave or sheaves having straight grooves and employ a drum A, which is shown in Fig. 2, provided on one side with left-hand grooves B in which two of the cables run and on the other side with right-hand grooves C in which another two of the cables run, while at an intermediate 5 point between the grooves BC are formed one or more straight grooves D, two being shown for receiving the two aforesaid cables which take up the counterbalance-weight on the car and which grooves D are formed integrally with the drum and rotate with the drum around a common shaft E.
In the drawings I have shown a sheave F, which holds the two middle cables or counterbalance-cables away from the upper side of the drum, and in the diagrammatic view, Fig.
l, I have indicated the said cables at G.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new and useful article of manufacture a cable-drum having one side or end pro vided with right-hand grooves, the other side or end with left-hand grooves and its intermediate portion with straight grooves. 7
2. As a new and useful article of manufacture a cable-drum for elevators having its ends provided with oppositely-inclined grooves and its intermediate portion with two parallel grooves, all formed integrally.
PARKER M. WILLIAMS.
