SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 760,763, dated May 24, 1904. Application filed April 13, 1903. Serial No.-15Z,311. (No model.)v
To a. whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AUGUST SoHonLLHoRN and HERMAN S. ALBRECHT, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of-St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulverizing- Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Our invention relates to a machine for pulverizing clay, shale, and other materials, our object being to improve the feeding of the machine,'the facilities with which the machine can be repaired, and the general construction of the machine. r
- Our invention consists in features of novelty, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a rear View of the machine, part in Vertical section. Fig. II is a side view. Fig. III is a vertical transverse section of the machine. Fig. IV is an enlarged detail vertical section taken on line IV IV, Fig. III.
Referring to thedrawings, 1 represents the housing of the machine, in which is journaled a shaft 2, carrying beaters or hammers 3.
4 represents the feed-opening of the machine, the front of which is formed by the in-. olined feed-plate 5 and the back of which is formed by an inclined casting 6, the inclination of the casting being greater than theinclination of. the plate 5, so that the opening is wider at the bottom than at the top transversely of the machine to avoid danger of the material sticking in the feed-opening, and to further insure against this danger of the material sticking in thefeed-opening 4 the ends of the feed-opening are inclined outwardly from the top down, as shown at 7 Fig. IV. By thus forming the feed-opening there is no danger of thematerial sticking or clogging in the feed-opening; but it will pass freely into the machine. I
In this class of machines it frequently becomes necessary to repair or renew the beaters or hammers, and in order to do this it is necessary to provide for free access to the in: terior of the machine. This we accomplish in our improved machine by making the back portion 8 separate from the main portion of the housing of the machine, so that it can be removed and replaced when repairs are to be made.
9 represents a steam-coil at the back of the machine, and 10 a steam-coil at thev front of g the machine, for heating or drying purposes. These pipes are fed through a supply-pipe 11 common to both and discharge into a pipe 12 common to both.
We claim as our invention 1. In a pulverizing-machine, the combination of the housing, a grate arranged in the lower half thereof and a rotary beater arranged above the grate; said housing having a feedopening on one side of the axisof the beater gradually increasing in size from its inlet both longitudinally and transversely, one wall of the feed-opening being one end wall of the housing, the opposite wall of the feed-opening extending downwardly to a point approxi mately above the axis of the beater-shaft and to the path of the rotary beater, and the other two walls of the feed-opening forming portions of the side walls of the housing.
2. In a pulverizing-machine, the combination of the housing, a grate arranged in the lower half thereof and a rotary beater arranged above the grate; said housing having a feedopening on one side of the axis of the beater gradually increasing in size from its inlet both longitudinally and transversely, one wall of the feed-opening being one end wall'of the housing, the opposite wall of the feed-opening extending downwardly to a point approximately above the axis of the beater-shaft and to the path of'the rotary beater, and the other two walls of the feed-opening forming por tions of the side walls of the housing; and
said housing being further provided on the side of thebeater-axis opposite to said feedopening with a removable section extending from the top of the housing to the grate-line AUGUST SCHOELLHORN. HERMAN S; ALBRECHT.
