Be it known that I, ANDREW SANANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of-Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governors for Explosive-Engines, of
which the following is a specification. My invention relates to improvements in explosive-engines; and the object of my invention is to provide means to automatically regulate'and govern the supply of explosive mixture.
, My invention consists of the constructions and combinations of. parts. hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an explosive-engine embodying my device- Fig. 2 1s a longitudmal section of' the regulating-valve, showing the tension device in elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail of the tension device. Fig. 4 is a detail of the valve stem or shaft with lever to governor, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the regulating-valve.

In Fig. 1 I have shown my invention employed inan explosive-engine having the bed a, the cylinder a, and the governor a driven by spur-gears from the crank-shaft, as shown. In constructing my regulating-valve I preferably provide the casing 6, having an air-supply. inlet b, opening into a chamber 6 and a gas or gasolene supply inlet 0 which I have shown with an inlet-valve 6*, opening into a chamber if in said casing, said chambers being formed by the central circular web or partition wall 6 and the laterally-extending partitions 6 joined to the outer wall of said cas- Said circular web or partitionI provide with ports 6 preferably of the form shown, and within this circular partition I provide a hollow rotatable valve 0, having ports 0 equal in number and preferably of corresponding shape to the ports of said central at 0 to the governor-frame, the other end of,

I preferably provide the valve-shaft with antifriction bearings and have shown the valve and its casing so formed as to carry the inner end of the shaft on balls 0 and the outer end is carried by the ball-bearing 0 secured to the bed by the bracket 0, and I further provide the spring 0 which bears against the dog 0 and the cup of the bearing c to hold said bearings in position.
The chambers b and b I form of such relative size and number of ports as will give the best proportion to the explosive mixture. In the drawings 1 have shown two gas or gasolene supply ports and six air-supply ports; but the relative size of the chambers and the number of ports in each may be made as desired.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim' 1. The combinationwith a hollow cylinder valve the interior of which forms a mixingchamber having its outlet at one end and with inlet-ports in the side walls thereof, of a casing for said cylinder having an annular chamber therein extending around said cylinder with ports through its inner wall adapted to register with the ports in said cylinder, partitions in said casing-chamber extending parallel with the axes of said cylinder dividing said chamber into two compartments for air and fuel supply respectively, a tension device secured to said cylinder, a movable member of a governor, and means engaging said member and cylinder whereby the movement of said movable member will rotate said cylinder against the tension of said tension device.
2. The combination with a hollow cylinder- Valve the interior of which forms a mixingchamber having its outlet at one end and with inlet-ports in the side Walls thereof, of a casing for said cylinder having an annular chamber therein extending around said cylinder, partitions in said casing-chamber extending parallel with the axis of said cylinder dividing said chamber into two compartments for the air'and fuel supply respectively, ports in said casing leading from each of said compartments and adapted to register with the ports in said cylinder, the combined area of the ports from one compartment bearing a fixed relation to those of the other and means to rotate said cylinder-valve to govern the supply and maintain the relative proportion of the explosive mixture.

The combination with a casing having a central longitudinal bore open at one end and an annular chamber therein surrounding said bore with partitions extending parallel with the center line of said bore, dividing said chamber into two compartments for air and gas respectively, each having ports to said bore, of a hollow cylinder-valve adapted to fit in said bore, the interior of which forms a mixing-chamber having an outlet at one end and inlet-ports in its side walls adapted to register with the ports in said casing, a shaft on which said valve is fixed, a tension device connected to said shaft, a projection on said shaft, a movable member of a governor, a pivoted lever the respective ends of which engage said member and projection to rotate said valve against the tension of said. tension device by the movement of said member, substantially as specified.
