that the gates may work freely.
It will be readily understood that the screen a structure shown in Figs. 3 and may be made of any desired capacity either in diameter or number of screens and that a dischargetrough will be led from a point opposite the periphery of each screen, said troughs being led to any desired points.
In Figs. 1 and 2 we have shown a three-screen structure in which suitable spouts are pro vided and led to points opposite fourdifier- The coal v is delivered from the elevator (not shown) through a chute 29, which delivers into a suitable weighing-box 30, through which the coal may be discharged 'upon the upper screen-cone 13, the larger coal passing from thence through chute 31', while theismaller coal passes therethrough, the next size passing from screen 12 through chute 3 2,
' the next size passing from screen 11 through ered by chute 33, and the finest size passing through screen llandbeing gathered by a hopper 34 and being delivered into a suitable carrier 35- as, for instance, a spiral conveyer-and delivit to the desired point.-
It will be noticed by this arrangement that the screen structure may be inclosed readily and bythe installation of a suitable heater this buildingmaintained as to prevent freezing, While the cars 31', 32, 33', and 35- may be arranged to pass upon each side of the structure, as shown.
It will be readily understood thatthe constrii'Eeion described, while beingprimarily desigiied for use in coal-mine tipples, is just as applicable to the separation of any materials,
and it is to be understood that we do not desire to be limited to the use of our device.
We claim as our invention- 1. The combination, vertical shaft, of a series of superimposed screens carried thereby and rotatable therewith, a series of gates arranged around the periphery of each screen and revolving thereszw screens at the therewith, a the periphery gates.
at such temperaturewith a substantially m st with to form an inclosing wall therefor, means for opening the gates in succession, and means for receiving the discharge from each of said point of opening of the gates. 2. The combination, with a substantially vertical shaft, of a series of superimposed con ical screens carried thereby and rotatable series of gates arranged around of each screen and revolving therewith'to form an inclosing wall therefor,
means for opening the gates in-succession, and means for receiving the discharge from each of said screens at the point of opening of tlie 3. The combination, with a substantially vertical rotatable shaft, of a series of 'superimposed screens carried thereby so as to rotate-therewith, a series of vertical gates arranged around the periphery-of each screen 'and revolving therewith and swingable upon substantially vertical axes to form an inclosing wall for each screen, means for opening the gates successively, and means for receiving the discharge from each screen.
4. The combination, with a substantially vertical rotatable shaft, of a series of super imposed screens carried thereby so as to rotate therewith, a series of vertical gates arranged around. the periphery of each screen and swingable upon substantially vertical axes to form an inclosing wall for each screen, means for normally holding said gates in wall formation, means for opening the gates successively, means for receiving the discharge from each screen, a rotatable ring mounted above said screens and concentric therewith, said ring being attached to the upper ends of the pivots of said gates, and means for driving said ring in synchronism with the shaft.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals, at Indianapolis, .lndiana, this 8th day of March, A. l). 1904-.
