SANDER FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,688, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed September 3, 1903. Serial No. 171,776. (No model.)
To all 1.071107% it may concern.-
Be it known that I, (iliconen l/V. FEAZIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alamogordo, in the county of Otero and Territory of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanders for Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sanding devices adapted to be used with locomotives for preventing the slipping of the drivers upon the rails. Its object is to provide an apparatus which is adapted for depositing sand upon the rails by means of an air-blast and which in case of failure of the air-supply may be used simply as a gravity-sanding device, the sand flowing by its own weight from the sand-box to the rails.
The invention consists in a certain construction and combination of parts, as will hereinafter be fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing my invention in use on alocomotive. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the sander-valve and casing in central vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view through the sander-valve and easing. Fig. 4 is a rear side elevation of my sander-valve casin Fig. 5 is a perspective view of my sander-valve casing, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the sander-valve plug and one side plate of the casing.
In the practice of my invention I employ in the sand-delivery pipes leadingfrom the sandbox on the locomotive a peculiar sand cut-off, with means whereby it may be worked from within the locomotive-cab, and air-pipes having a cut-off valve also located within the cab, which idea will be understood in its broad conception upon reference to Fig. 1 of my drawings.
In detail the invention involves a sand cutoff consisting of aspeeial casing A, having an upper port B in open communication with the sand-box O and lower ports I) and E. The port D is in open communication with the back-up delivery-pipe F. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) The casing A may have any suitable support on the locomotive-boiler. In 2 one means therefor is shown, consisting of posts F, fixed to the locomotive-boiler in any obvious or well-understood way. The casing is constructed with openings F, adapted to receive the posts F, just as described, and setscrews F tapped into the casing A, may be utilized for holding the casingA on the posts F, as shown in Fig. 2.
Within the casing A, 1 form an annular opening (.ar, adapted to receive a rotatable valve H, which may or may not be in one piece with the near side plate I of the valve-casing A. The front plate J of the casing is intended to be secured to the valve H, and screw-bolts J may be utilized therefor, as shown. In fact,
- both side plates when the rear thereof is separate from'the valve may be secured by similar means. The valve H is constructed with a vertical passage-way K, having its upper end K enlarged, adapted to provide at any adjustment of the valve open communication with the portB or inlet-opening into the val vecasing. The lower end of the passage-way is reduced, at K", conforming to the portopenings I) E, leading from the valve-casing. It will be noticed that the ports D E are spaced apart, providing a closing-seat L for the passage-way K when the sand-valve H is at normal or cut-01f position. (See Fig. 2.) In the outer walls of the valve H, I form recesses M, reducing its contact or hearing in the opening G of the casing A and adapted to provide free discharge of any grit or sand that may enter between the valve and its seat in said. opening Gr through one or the other of the deliveryports I) E. In Fig. 2 the valve is shown in full lines at cut-off position, the dotted lines 1 1 indicating the passage-wayK adjusted to feed sand to the back-up deliverypipe E and the dotted line 2 2 indicating it adjusted to the forward sand-delivery pipe D. It will be noticed that in either adjusted position of the valve H just described the recesses M will be adjusted to position as indicated by the dotted lines 3 3 and one thereof adapted for full discharge of the gritty matter above mentioned through the deliveryport in communication therewith.

N into the valve-space within the casing A, and 0 indicates air-jets leading through the casingto thepassage K in the valve H. The air-jet O has tubular or other passage P with any suitable supply R, and a valve S is provided in the airpassage P, adapted to be Worked within the locomotive-cab.
In order to limit movement of the sandcut-off valve, the rear casing-plate I may be cut away, as at T, having shoulders T adapted for contact with the pin U, projecting from the valve-casing A. (See Figs. 4:, 5, and 6.)

The front plate J is provided with means, substantially as the boss W, for fixedly supporting the arm W, adapted to be worked by the) rod extending from the locomotiveca While I do not desire to limit myself to any special means in the locomotive-cab for working the sand-valve rods W and the air-valve S, in Fig. 1 I show one means, consisting of a substantially U-shaped frame 10, having drawings. It is apparent that with means substantially as just described one movement of the handle 14 will effect the opening of both sand-valves H and also the air-valve S.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the sand-suppl y and delivery thereof, a suitable casing and a rotatable valve, the said casing having an inlet and two outlet ports, the rotatable valve being constructed with a vertical passage having its upper end in open communication with the casing inlet-port, at any adjustment of the said rotatable valve, substantially as described.
2, In combination with the sand-supply and delivery thereof, asuitable casing and a rotatable valve, means for working the said valve and means adapted for feeding air into it under pressure, the casing having an inlet and two outlet ports, the rotatable valve being constructed with opposite exterior recesses, and a vertical passage, enlarging from its lower end, adapted to provide open communication through the said inlet-port at any adjustment of the rotatable valve, substantially as described.
