W. DROSTE. APPARATUS FOR PREVENTING THE RUNNING AWAY 0P HORSES.

PATENT OFFICE.
VVILHELM DROSTE, OF DUISBURG, GERMANY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,684, dated May 10. 1904.
Application filed December 8, 1903. Serial No. 184,366. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LWILHELM DROSTE, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at 54 Niirenweg, Duisburg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus to Prevent the Running Away of Horses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an appendage to the bridle of horses, which consists of a pair of levers ready to compress the animals nostrils; and its object is to provide a simple device operated from the drivers box or any other suitable place and preventing the running away of horses by stopping their breath.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a top plan thereof with parts of the supporting-strap broken away. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device with the adjacent eooperating parts in section, and Fig. 4 is a similar view with supporting-frame shown in longitudinal section.
My improvement consists in providing a pair of frames A, which are secured to the bands 2', which bands are attached in any desired manner to the nose-band h of the bridle. The forward portions of these frames are formed into housings in which the racks f are slidable. a and a are arms or levers, which have their rear ends pivoted, as at I), and. formed with toothed segments 0 for engagement with the racks f and their forward ends enlarged and overlapping the adjacent ends of the framehousings. These racks are actuated by levers g, which are pivoted, as at in, to one side of said racks and have tailpieces projecting in the rear thereof. Thus when the forward ends of these levers are swung outwardly, as
indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the racks will be forced forwardly, and consequently the arms a will be moved to the position indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 4. I preferably operate these levers g by attaching lines thereto at points adjacent their forward ends.
When the levers or throttle members a assume the position indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 4, the same will tightly engage the nostrils of the animal and throttle him, so as to cause him to slacken his pace, and when normal conditions are again restored the pressure on the levers g is relaxed, whereupon the springs (Z and 6 will return the racks to their normal positions.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a device of the type set forth, a throttle member, a slidable means operatively connected thereto, a lever pivoted to one side of said means and having its rear end projecting to the rear thereof, and means whereby the parts are returned to their normal positions after each operation. i
2. In a device of the type set forth, a slidable rack, a pivoted throttle member having a toothed sector meshing with said rack, a pivoted member engaging said rack for sliding the same in one direction, and a resilient means for returning said rack to its normal position.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WVILHELM DROSTE.
