TO LL Wl-IOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
, Be it known that I, IIIRA'MK. NEEDHAM, ofthe city of Titusville, county of Crziwford, and State of Pennsylvania, have inventedy ccrtainlnew and useful Improvcmentsin Lamps for burning crude petroleum, dto.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and-exact`description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon.
.l The object of my invention is to so construct a ,flat or curvedwiclt lampi-burner that crude petroleum and other yolatle hydrocarbons can be burned vtherein witlrpert'ect safety and complete combustion; and at the .same tir'nc the cost of theV burner shall be such as to bringit within the reachof all. To accomplish this, I make nsoioirv two flat or curved wicks and wicktubes, and in order that the crude particles of the oil shall be drawn upto the flame and entirely consumed, without smoke or unpleasant odor, it is necessary to supply exceedingly strong a\nd steady currents et" air to both the outer and'vinner surface of the darne. Due precautions must also be used that the parts of the lamp liable vto contact with the oil shall not becomesuiciently heated to causeV an undue generation of' gas within the lamp, and consequent risk of explosion. The accompanying drawings illustrate -the details of my Vinvention'- Figures'l and 2 being vertical cross-sections of lny burner, and Figure 8 a horizontal section' on line A B. c Itwiil be seen that the external form of the burner is qui-te similar to the ordinary kerosene-burner, and it isjntendcd to 'be lsubstituteidfor thatv ini common lamps.` v
arepresents thebody or casing of theburner, a portion o'f which is perforated, to admit air to the outer surface of theiiame through tbenair-passage b. I use two at wicks, placed within thewick-tubes ec, which tubes I malte curved in t'heir horizontal sectionfsubstantially als shown. These wick-tubes are secured to the` lower portion, d, of the burner, which Vis screwed into the collar of the lamp in the usual 'manner'. I construct a diaphragm, e, between the casinga 'and lower part d, which-diaphragm extends entirely across the burner, with the exception of the space between the wick-tubes. A 'portion of the diaphragm e also extends upwards to the ltop ofthe wick-tubes, and connects`their edges solidly togethem'as shown. An air-passagmff, is left under the diaphragm, communicating with the external air. This passage may be open at'the sides, as shown,`\or provided with a perforated easing. The wick-tubes ,are brought nearly together attheir tops, and united at their edges, as shown, for the purpose of' contractingand quiekening the current of air passing upwards betweetthei'n.
The effect produced isasfollows: Th'e'tlam'cs from' the two wicks unite at their edges, ahd, by meansof the diaphragm e,.two distinct and separate air-passages, b and are formed,.the former supplying air to the outer and the latterto 'the inner surfaces of the ame. Alcune, g, is provided, modified to suit the peculiar form of flame. i
By the above-described arrangement, obtain a perfect combustion of crude petroleum, at a slight cost as compared with refinedroils, while a nuch Aincre intense -light is produced. The lower portion ofthe burner cannot become heated, being protected by the constant current of' cool air. passing through the space f. The wicks may he raised simultaneously by means of the two sets ol toothed wheels geared together, so that b'oth may be operated from one-projecting shaft, as shown. In the drawings, the direction Aof thc air vsupplying the outer i and inner surfaces of the ilarne is indicated by red arrows.
I dofnot claimv broadly the use of two dat or curved wick-tuhes, nor vthe supplying of uir to the interior of the 'flame,'-e`xcept und'crthe mode of construction set forth; but v What I`clai'r`n as my specific invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl The described orrangementand Vcombination of the wickftubes c c, basefplatc cl, and diaphragm e, the latter extending upwards, and connecting the edges ofthe wick-tubes,so as to form separate and distinct internal and i external"air-passages f and-bj,` as. shown, and thewhole so constructed that it may be appliedto an ordinaryV lamp-collar,substantiallyas and for the purposes set' forth.`
Dated at Titusville,Pennsylvania, this 29th day of July, A. D. 1867.
