This inventioni's an improvement on the combined seeder, cultivator, androller described in Letters Patent 46,480, granted to me on'the21st of February,1865. 4 I l Y The improvements consist, first, in a peculiar'manner of constructing the rollers; i second, in a device' .for Asubstituting `wheels for` the rollers when' desired; third, in a mode of. applying the scraper' which-is employed to remove earth from the surface of the rollers; fourth, in a device -for connecting the conducting seed-tubes to the frame fifth, in a device forsecuring the lower ends of the"lseedtuhes and the seed-scatterersvhich`are applied thereto, sixth ,lin a device for communicating'motio from the rollers or driving-wheels to thelseeding mechanism.' The parts being then put together, the entire outer surfaceI of'- the roller is turned-down tothe required size and cylindrical shape.

Eig. 6 represents au inner face 'view of one-of the roller-heads, with some of the planks or staves in position,and some of thosethat are in position turned or dressed downto their proper cylindrical shape, flush withI the peripheries lof the heads. Blyiforming the inner flange b in the 'angular shaperepresented in this view, (tig. 6,) I dispense with anynecessity of dressing the inner faces of" the planks, but tenon them into their goovcs by cutting on theoutside only.

Upon lthe 'heads BBVof the roller B" are cast stud`-shafts b b", constituting the journals upon which the said rollers'turn, and the outer head B of the roller B, has a. similar-stud-shaft, which is not here shown. The

journals atthe outer ends'of the rollers run in boxes P P, (lig. fitted with` screw-boltspp,`so that the caps may be removed atwill. l

Q represents a. standard or hanger, formed underneath with a notch, (indicated by thevdotted white line in fig-2,) constituting the bearing of the"journalb, and enabling the machine to be lifted clear of .the rollers, when-,the caps of .thofboxes P are removed. A v l The stud-'shaft-b 4ts in a socket in thecentre pf' the head B, as shown in g. 7, so as to permit the rollers to turn independently of eac-l1 other, and thus adapt thel machine to be turned reely in any direction. The

stud-shaft B5 carries a pulley, J, which drives a chain, I, so as to communicate motion t' 4theclu'tch-pulley J1, and'thus to the seeding-apparatds. Thepulleys J J1 are formed to t th'elinks of the chain' I, so as to avoid the possibility of slip. The device' I have substituted for thbe\"driv inglband, described in my-former machine, becnusel ndthe chain positive, roliable, and certain in its operation. I

Having found that it is frequently desirable to use other .parts of my machine without' the rollers, and to provide the farmer with a combined implement rvhich he can use whether the groiind is in a suitable condition for rolling or not, .I have made m'y rollers B B1 removable, as above described.- When the'rollers are dispensed rvith, I lsupport the iear of thelmachine on a pair of wheels, W Wl, mounted on a shaftW2, which carries a pulley, J, to drive the chainLas before described. The wheel W is mounted loosely upon the shaft W, to facilitate the turning of the machine in yany direction, and the driving-wheel W1 is keyed to the said shaft, so as toimpart motion to it, and through it andthe chain I to the seeding-apparatus.

S is a'scrapcr, attached to thegear part of the frame'throughblocks U U, which taper-forward bothyertically and horizontally. The' forward edge s of the-said lscraper, for a width of about half an inch, -is turned obliqnely downward, and placed nearly in contact with the surface of the rollers, so as, to scrape the earth there'- from, Aas. they rotate. In'operation some particles of earth will fail to be fully removed by the scrapr-S,'but being loosened and 'carried' above it, will, fall back upon the scraper,. and'may there collectand clog unless a special provision bevmade to facilitate their free 'discharge The horizontal taper of the blocks is to prevent theirroffering obstructionto the discharge of. any 'dirt that may fall upon'the back s, by which the scraper-is attached to the frame, and the vertical taper of the blocks imparts a. backward inclination tothe saidback of the scraper, so that the dirt will be constantly-discharged'by its own gravity.

The upper ends of the conducting-tubes'li are formed w'than'gesl, turned'down at right angles forl the reception of screvvs, b y which the tubes are attached to the frame. vStraps T pass round'in front of the conductingtubes-L,-near their lower ends, and are secured 'to thc frame by bolts t, which also pass through the attaching flanges or T,heads l ofthe seed-scatterers L. l

lBy these means I am enabled, with great ease, and without disturbing anyv other pnrt of the machine, to remove and replace any tube or scatterer which may have -become injured in use.l

Having thus described my invention, what claim as new therein,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of the ears be, angular flanges b, and annular flanges b1, for securing the staves of the rollers, as described.

2. I further claim the combination of the open bearing Q with the detachable cap's P, to facilitate the removal of the rollers B B', substantially as explained. l

3. I further claim the scraper-ss',constructedV with'slop'mg backs s, and'rloivn-tnrn'cdedg'es s', and fastened under tapering blocks U, attached to the under -side ot" the rear of the frame, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.- l I 4. I further claim constructingbt'he conducting-tubees L, with flanges l, for attaching th'em beneath .the fra-me, and permitting ,their ready removal, asexplained. n v

5. I further claim the T-lieaded scntterers L" l', vvrhen made seperately from'the tubesIi, and, attached in connection therewith, but capable of independent removal, substantially as described.
