ROLLING-MILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,326, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed November 25, 1903. Serial No. 182,660- (No model.)
To all whmn it mag concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES DAVIS SWINDELL, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolling- Mills; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it'appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in rolling-mills, and more particularly to conveyers or repeaters therefor, the object of the invention being to provide improved devices whereby the plates when rolled will be carried over the upper roll and back for rerolling.
A further object is to provide an improved guide or conveyer for the plates which will be held tight against the upper roll and insure the return. of the plate.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view in elevation illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detached view of the deflector.
1 1 represent parallel standards having alined bearings for the trunnions 2 of the presser-rolls 3 and preferably provided with set-screws 4 to adjust the pressure of the rolls. Brackets 5. 5 are secured to the standards 1 in alinement with the meeting peripheries of the rolls, and each comprises a plate secured to the forward edge of the standard by bolts or screws 6 and having an arm 7 bent around against the inside face of the standard. Links 8, carrying a shaft 9 at their inner ends, are pivotally connected to arms 7 by bolts 10 and are provided on their lower edges with lugs or enlargements 11, between which and corresponding lugs or enlargements 12 on the arms 7 coiled springs 13 are located to normally press the free ends of the links and parts carried thereby up against the upper roll 3.
A deflector 1 1 is supported on shaft 9 and comprises a plate 15 with a series of triangular ribs 16 on its rear face, having alined holes therein to receive shaft 9 and dispose the lower edge of plate 15 upon lower roll 3 and hold the plate at an incline, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, to deflect the rolled plates up around the upper roll.
A series of chain-rollers 16 are connected at their lower ends to shaft 9, disposed around a portion of the upper roll 3 and connected at their upper ends on a shaft 17, which latter is supported in eyebolts 18, mounted in a transverse bar 19 and provided with threaded hand-wheels 20 and coiled springs 21 between the wheels 20 and bar 19 to yieldingly hold the chain-rollers against the upper roll and permit of adjustment of such tension to accomplish the best results. These chain-rollers 16 comprise a series of parallel links 22, connected by pins 23, on which rollers 24: are mounted and held against the upper rol'l. Each alternate roller 24 is disposed in alinement, while the adjacent rollers are out of alinement, or, in other words, the rollers are located at opposite ends of the pins, so as to permit them to slightly overlap, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Rollers 24: are also mounted on shafts 9 and 17.
The operation of my improvements is as follows: The blocks 26 to be rolled are preferably fed to the rolls 3 on suitable platforms or supports 27, and as they pass between the rolls and thinned into plates they first strike the deflector 14 and are guided up between the rollers 24: and upper roll 3, and as the latter turns it will carry the plate up and over the same, the chain-rollers serving to hold the plate against upper roll 3. When the plate has passed over the roll, it is reversed and again inserted between the rolls, and this operation is repeated until the plates have been reduced to their proper thickness.
Various slight changes might be resorted to in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the precisedetails set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention. 7
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of two presser-rolls, a flexible guide device disposed at one side of and normally bearing against one of said rolls to direct material over the same, and adjustable yielding means connected with the free end of said flexible device for holding the same against the rolls.
2. The combination of two presser-rolls, a spring-pressed deflector held in position to guide the rolled plates upward, and a series of chain-rollers held against the upper roll to receive the plates from the deflector and carry them over the upper roll.
3. The combination with parallel standards, rolls mounted in said standards, of brackets secured to the standards, links pivoted to the brackets, springs pressing the links upward toward the upper roll, a shaft carried by the free ends of the links, a deflecting-plate carried by said shaft and adapted to guide the rolled plates upward, and a flexible conveyer ingly supported near the juncture of the rolls,
.of roller-carrying chains connected to said shaft and extending partially around the up per roll, a shaft connecting the upper ends of the chains, a transverse bar between the standards, eyebolts to receive the last-mentioned shaft and disposed in openings in the bar, hand-wheels screwed onto said eyebolts and springs between the hand-wheels and bar.
5. The combination with two parallel standards, two rolls supported in the standards and located one above the other, of a deflector located in front of the juncture of the rolls and adapted to guide the rolled plates upward, a series of chain-rollers held against the face of the upper roll and a tension device for yieldingly holding said chain-rollers against the upper roll.
