TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. PRESCOTT and WI IITCOMB JUDSON, of Galesburg, in the county of Knox, and State of Illinois, have invented-a new and useful Improvement in Odometers; and we do declare that the following is a full, elcar, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specilication, in which- Figure' 1 isa top view. i 'Y Figure-2 is a view showing points on end of-.driving-shaft, andthe side of case enclosing the odometer.
Figure 3 is a top view, with casing and dial-plate removed.
Figure 4 is a. view of the under side of dial-plate. i
Figure 5 is aiview of under side of ratchet-wheel. Figure 6 is a section of the odometer, as indicated by line v wiof fig. 3, showing end of eccentric-shaft and the slide.4
Figure 7 is a transverse central section ofthe odometer, as indicated by line a: y in figs. 1, 3, and 4.
Like letters in the dierent figures of the drawings indicate like parts.
The nature of our inventionconsists,' iirst, in providing a. stationary dial-plate with two sets of figures, and two hands operated by suitable gearing, connected therewith, so that one hand, called a mile-hand, indicates each-mile from one to fifty, and the other hand acts as a multiplier, moving one spec-e at the end of each fifty (50) miles travelled, thus indicating the distances over fifty to five hundred (500) or more miles; second, in providing an eccentric-wheel or pin upon the end of the actuating-shaft, which operates in an oblong slotted slide, witha pawl, by means of which the required motion is given the hands.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is a stationary dial-plate, properly divided, marked, and numbered, with two sets of figures, (see lig. 1;) one for the mile-hand a, which indicates cach mile, from one to fifty, and the other for the multiplier-hand Il, which counts by fifties, from one to ve hundred, or more, miles. We construct a stationary wheel, c, attached to uprightshaft B, with fifty-one cogs or teeth, and a movable wheel, d, with fifty cogs or teeth, having square hub, c, which works over the round shaft Bi. The under face of wheel d works upon the upper side or face of the stationary wheel c, as seen in iig'. 7, so that the teeth or cogs of the pinion fwork in both those wheels.
C is a ratchet-wheel of such size and numberof teeth, and the gearing connected with it so arranged as that it makes one revolution during each mile .travelled by the carriage to which the odometer is attached. A piniomf, is properly arranged and attached to the lower side of the ratchetfwheel C, so that the teeth engage properly with the teeth of wheelsc and d, lsee fig. 5.) i
D is a loose hub, fitted upon the square hub e, and provided with a tooth, g, for the piirpose of operating the ratchet-wheel E, attached to under side of dial-plate, connected with hand or multiplier I), as seen in fig. 3.
F is an eccentric on the end of the actuating-shaft G, which, by means of the elongated slotted slide H, -and pawl L, operates the ratchet-wheel C.
Operation.
The ratchet-wheel C, to which the pinion is attached, makes onerevolution during each mile travelled, and, by means of the pinion, and Fthe diiTerence in the number of teeth in the wheels c and d, moves wheel d one notch or tooth forwardpand the hand a indicates on the dial one mile, and so on up to fifty miles, as seen in iig. 1. And it will be seen from the description that the carriage must travel fifty miles, causing fifty revolutions of the ratchet-wheel C, in order tb produce one entire revolution of wheel d, which will bring the tooth g in contact witli ratchet-wheel E, andlthus move the hand or multiplier b one space, indicating thus the fifties and hundreds -of miles travelled, and adding to this the number of miles indicated by the mile-band, gives, in miles, the exact distance travelled.
Claims.
Having thus fully described our invention, what wc claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Imparting motion to the gearing by means of an eccentric on the end of the actuating-shaft, operating n slide witha pawl, substantially in the rnanner and for ther purpose as herein described.
2. Providing a, stationary dial-plate -with two sets of figures and two hands, zx. mile-hund and a multiplier, operated substantially in the manner and for the purpose as herein described.
3. The construction of the ratchet-wheel C with pinion e, the stationary and movable wheels c and d, the loose hub D, with tooth g and ratchet-wheel E, as arranged and operated, substantially in the manner and for tbe purposes as herein described. i I
