- WI'I'IISSES INVENTOR UNITED STATES latented April 12, 1904.
JESSE R. OAKLEY, OF BRADDOCK, PENNSYLVANIA.
METAL-TONGS- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,339, dated April 12, 1904;.
Application filed. December 28, 1903. Serial No. 186,830. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JESSE R. OAKLEY, of Braddock,in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Metal-Tongs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly broken away, showing my tongs in position for lifting an armor-plate ingot. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the removing of the tongs from engaged with or disengaged from the ingot.
In the drawings, 2 represents a cross bar or support which may be connected by chains 3 3 to the depending hook member 4 of a crane. At each end of the support 2 is an outer longer chain 5 and an-inner shorter chain 6. The lower links or ring members 7 of the chains 5 are adapted to engage projecting trunnions 8 on hollow shafts 9, mounted in a surrounding yoke 9, which is of such a size as to drop over the sink-head 10 of the ingot. The trunnions form the outer arms of bellcrank levers, the other arms 8 of which are shaped in jaw form to engage and grip the sides of the sink-head. The hollow shafts are pivoted on pins or bolts extending at opposite sides ofthe yoke, which may consist simply of two straps, as shown. The jaws 8 are provided with perforated cars 11, through which a pin or bolt 12 may be passed when the shorter chains 6 are to be attached to these jaws.
, To prevent tilting of the jaws beyond fixed limits in either direction, I provide the hol low shaft portions of the bell-cranks with arcshaped projections 13, the ends of which engage shoulders 14: on the shaft-bearings at their ends when tion.
In using the device I preferably cast the sink-head with opposite angular recesses 15, and when the tongs are dropped over the sink-head, as in Fig. 1, a lifting strain on the chains 5 will cause the jaws to bite into the sink-head or its recesses, thus enabling the ingot to be lifted. The heavier the ingot the greater will be the grip of the jaws.
To detach the tongs from the ingot, they are lowered until the yoke rests upon the upper part of the ingot proper. The tongs thus being lowered to bring the lower links of chains 6 into registry with the jaws, they are pinned or bolted thereto and a lift on the tongs will then pull out the jaws and release the tongs, which may then be lifted away.
The advantages of my invention will be obvious to those skilled in the art of handling castings.
The tong device is simple, not liable to get out of order, and may be easily gripped to or loosened from the ingot.
A single chain at each end of the support may be used and connected alternately to the levers and the jaws, other flexible connections than chains may be used, and many other changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the parts without departing from my invention.
I claim- 1. Tongs comprising an upper support, a lower support having swinging jaws with projecting lever-arms, and flexible connections on the upper support arranged to engage either the lever-arms or the jaws; substantially as described. v
2. Tongs comprising an upper support, a lower yoke having bell-crank levers with their inner ends formed as jaws, and swinging connections on the support arranged to engage either the bell-crank lever-arms or the jaws; substantially as described.
3. Tongs comprising an upper support, a lower yoke having bell-crank levers with their inner arms formed as jaws, and flexible conthe bell-cranks tilt in either direcnections arranged to engage the outer bellmovement of the jaws; substantially as decrank arms and the jaws, the connections for scribed. 10 the arms beinglonger than those for the jaws; In testimony whereof I have hereunto set substantially as described. my hand.
5 4E. Tongs comprising an upper support, a JESSE R. OAKLEY.
lower yoke having swinging jaws, and levers Witnesses: thereon, connections between the support and R. D. LITTLE,
the yoke, and stops for limiting the tilting W. H. CORBETT.
