ROTARY MQTHH SPECIFICATEGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 756,606, dated .April 5, 1904.
Application filed August 21, 1903. Serial No. 170,283. (Ho model.)
To all when?, t rfb/ty concern,.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS EAsTMooRn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State vof Florida, have invented a new and Improved Rotary Motor, ot' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in rotary motors of the turbine type, an object being to provide a rotary motor of simple and durable construction, easily reversed, and arranged to utilize the motive agent to the fullest extent.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the general description.
l will describe a rotary motor embodying my 'invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in seetion, ot' a rotary motor embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 et' Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates the motor-cylinder having annular steam-chambers 6 7 in its heads 3 9. Extended through the cylinder and having bearings in the heads thereoI is a 'shaft 10, on which is mounted the cylindrical piston 11. On this piston 11 is a spirallydisposed rib 12, and in the space between the coils of the rib are metal plates 13, arranged in staggered relation. At the ends, however, l employ three or more plates 14, which are arranged in parallelism and at an obtuse angle with relation to the axis of the cylinder. These several plates are of thin steel or other resilient metal and are secured only at their inner edges, so that said plates 'may be bent under the influence of the motive-agent pressure. By arranging the plates 13 in staggered relation, or at reverse angles alternately, the steam or other agent will act upon the same as wind upon the sails of a boat.
The object in placing the three or more valve 19, which may be turned to reverse the direction of rotation of the piston.
The motor is kept in regular movement by. means of a governor 20, controlling a Valve arranged in the valve-casing 21, the said governor having a miter-pinion 22 engaging with a miter-pinion 23, on the shaft of which is a band-pulley 24C, fromwhich a band '25 extends to a band-wheel 26 on the shaft 10.
An exh aast-pipe .27 has a branch connection 28 with the steam-chamber 6 and a branch connection 29 with the steam-chamber 7, and at the junction ot' said pipe 27 with its branches is a reversing-valve 30. On the stein of the valve is an arm 31, from which a link 32 ex- 75 tends to a lever 33, the connection with said lever being above its pivotal point with the standard 34, and from said lever below its pivotal point a link 35 extends to a connection with an arm 36 on the stein of the valve 19. 8O By operating' the lever 33 it is obvious that the valve 19 may be rotated to admit steam either to the chamber 6 or the chamber 7, and at the same time the valve 30 will be reversed to permit the exhaust from the proper chamber, 8 5 and the admission of steam and exhaust may be regulated by moving the Valves through the medium of the leve-i' to any desired extent,- and the said lever will be held as adjusted by means of a pin 37, carried by said lever and engaging with the rack 38.
ln operation, assuming the steam or other motive agent to enter through the chamber 6,
`ithe pressure will first be upon the plates 14,
which will be bent or deflected, as before mentioned, and pass on through the spiral channeLhetiaeen the ribs, and by this means all plates 14 in paralleiism at the' ends is to prelthe pressure will be utilized, and the said *pressure will operate throughout theentirel area of'the piston.
, Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A rotary motor comprising a cylinder, a
- cylindrical piston arranged therein, a spirally. disposed rib o n the outer surface of said piston, and spring yielding plates arranged in the space between the coils of said rib.
2. `A rotary motor comprising a cylinder, a cylindrical piston arranged therein, a spirallydisposed rib on said piston, and spring yielding platesiarranged alternately 'at reverse angles between the coils of the rib.-
3. A rotary motor comprising a cylinder having annular inlet 'and exhaust chambersV formed in its heads, a rotary piston arranged in the cylinder, yielding plates on the piston,l
yielding plates on the piston, the heads of Said cylinder being provided with annular chambers, motive-agent-supply pipes leading into said chambers, exhaustpipes leading from said chambers, a Valve for controlling the inlet, a valve for. controlling the exhaust, and means for simultaneously reversing or operating said valves.
y 5. Arotary motor comprising a cylinder, a A
cylindrical piston arranged therein and having a spirally-disposved rib, spring yielding plates arranged in the space between the coils of the'rib, the said plates being arranged alternately at reverse angles, and a plurality of spring yielding plates at the ends of the' cyl inder, the said plates being arranged in pard allelisrn and at an angle ywith relation to' the axis of the piston.
In testimony whereof i have signed my nam to this speciication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. i
THoMas nnsrmeonn.
