' To'ALL Pensons pro WnoM THESE rnEsENrsvfMArgooME:
Be it known 'that I, ALBERTHALLOVELL, of Lowell, ir'the county of Middlesex, and Stateof Massachusetts, havenventcd a new and useful'Apparatus for Heating F 'Ia:-]ron's, 85e.; and'I do hereby'declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and representedin the accompanying drawings, of which-- Figure 1 is a top View, p i l Figure 2 avfront elevation, and Figure 3 a'longitudinal section of it. In suchl drawings,'-A denotes a stand for sustaining the Vliet-iron, or article to be heated. -This stand is supported over a gais-burneigB, in' turn, isruphcld,by a foot or stand, C. A pipe, D, attached to the stand C, serves, when connected `with a common gas-burneror'tuhe by a flexible conduit or hose, to supply com-1 bustible gasto the burner.v `The gas is.led;direetlyjntoa small chamber,`, made in the lower parte? the burner, and provided with a dischargefopening, c', and a conioalyalvoeseat, e, at its upper part.. Within the said scat is a Valve, d, appliedtethe lowerv end of the stern-or wire e, extending through achambelgf, made axially in thebu'rner. The `valve-rod is supported by aspring, g', arranged within the chamber-f. Surrounding thechamberf'isa series ofvvertioal passages,` gg, 85e., each Vof which :is-open at top. Each of these passages, has an airfpassage,]i, leading into it, and communicates with t-he chambery"byel small hole, z'. Adeilector, 7c,
Yis screwed into the. topjof4 the chamberfjand extends over the mouths of discharge offthe severalV passages y g, lthe valirestem being passed concentrically through the dellectorA By such mode of applying thedetleotor to theehamberf, it not only forms a stopperto the top thereof', but'can he adjusted vertically withA reference to the upper end s ofthe discharge-passages g g... the top of the valve-stemlis'*ahutton or head, l, so arranged that, when a {lat-iron is placed'ou the stand A,`sueh Hat-iron shall rest on the head of thevalve-stem, and force downwardhe said stem, so as to open the valve and allow. gas toilow from the chamber b into the ohamberf. The valveseat c, and its valve cl, orreither, should b(e made so as to enable it to leak from the chamber @through the valve'opening, a sullcient amount of gasto keep a slight llame in existence on thej'discharge-mouths of the Vpassages g, such llame serving to put in combustion the larger amount of gas which would escape from the lchamber 6,-when `the valve thereof is opened by the pressure of the {lat-iron ou its stem. Y
When the apparatus is in use, air will enter each of the chambers g by its hole z,'a'nd will mingle with the gas passing through-such chamber g, and bc burned therewith, the whole producing a blue flame of great heating power. On removing from the stand A the flat-iron" or Varticle to he heated, the spring will elevate the valve,
soins to'greatly diminish the passage of gas through the burner. Below the adjustable deileotor is a conical {laine-guide, p, which, witllthedeector., serres to spreadthe llame when the deilector is screwed down toward L,sach guide. '.lhe wholeforms a very eilicient and convenientapparatus for heatingea flat-iron or a kettle.
AI claim thecombination as well as the arrangement of the valve d and its stem e with the flat-iron stand A and thc gas-burner B, applied thereto substantially as specified. I .also claim the Combination and arrangement of the adjustable deiector lc with the valve d, its stem e, the fiat-iron stand, and the burner, arranged as set forth. i I also claim the combinationand arrangement of the conical flame-guide@ with the adjustable deile'ctor It", thel'aliied, its stem e, and the burner B, or the latter and the {lat-iron stand A, arranged'as represented.
ALBERT HALLOWELL.
