SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 756,254, dated April 5, 1904.

To aZZ whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY M. LOVE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Utica, Oneida county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in harrows whereby the tooth-bars supporting the teeth may be .raised or lowered without turning and. may thus preserve the same angle of operation at different depths in the soil and whereby they may be, simultaneously raised from the ground, so as to permit the harrow, with or without the aid of shoes, to be drawn from place to place; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
My invention consists in certain novel features in construction and in combinations and in arrangements of parts, as more fully and particularly pointed out hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which show a construction as an example from among others within the spirit and scope of my invention, Figure 1 shows a side elevation of my harrow in section on the line X X of Fig. 3. Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of the harrow. Fig. 3 shows a top view of the same.

Referring to the figures more in detail, A
is the draft-frame of the harrow. At the rearward portion the ends of the frame are connected by a cross-bar A, which is fixedly lar at the end loosely surrounding the toothbar. To the tooth-bars, as at point n, are fixedly attached the posts C, also of suitable length and size for the purpose. There are two such posts for each tooth-bar, which are shown as fixedly attached at the extreme end thereof and beyond the pointwhere the toothbar is supported by the collar-arm of the bellcrank B. The standard C and the post C, which is adjacent to the standard on each side of the harrow-frame, are pivotally connected at their free ends at the points 0 0' by the link B.- -The posts 0" are all of a length and of the same length as standard 0 and are so connected together and with the said standard C that they will be held parallel to each other and parallel with the standard C at each point in the operation of the harrow.
D is a rod which connects the free end of each post C in parallel position, as stated, at
the points 0, there being such a rod on each side of the harrow, connecting the posts on each side in series.
D is a bar which pivotally connects the free ends of the bell-cranks in parallel position to each other by being attached thereto at the points 1", and such bar is on each side of the barrow, connecting the bell-cranks on each side'in series.
W is a slotted segment which is attached to the draft-frame in some suitable manner and may be attached to the side of the draft-frame, but which I haveshown as being attached to the transverse bar A, which holds the sides of the draft-frame together. Pivoted on the transverse bar or on the side of the draftframe-is a lever V. To this is attached a key 2, which is withdrawn from engagement with the. slotted segment by means of the handle 4;, connected therewith by a suitable wire 4). This lever V is suitably connected with the bars D, or these parts may be located in any suitable position to accomplish the purpose.
lever is thrust forward the bell-cranks on each side of the harrow are moved forward simultancously, and the posts C, being pivotally connected with the fixed standard C, are elevated simultaneously and parallel to the plane of the standard C, and they being fixedly attached to the tooth-bars the latter are also moved upward without being revolved on their axis, and the teeth attached to the toothbars are thereby enabled to be adjusted to any depth of operation when having been fixedly attached to the tooth-bars at the most effective angle of work.
S represents shoes which are pivotally attached to each side of the draft-frame at the points 3.
d is a link pivotally connecting the shoe and the upper arm of the bell-crank, being attached thereto at the points f and f, respectively.
When the lever is drawn backward, the teeth will be depressed and at the same time the shoes will be elevated, so as not to interfere with the operation of the harrow. When the lever is thrust forward, the teeth will be raised from the ground and the shoes will be thrust downward and furnish means for dragging the harrow.
It is understood that the several parts shown in the figures may be somewhat differently arranged without in any degree departing from the spirit of my inventionas,' for instance, the standard C may be attached at any suitable points, likewise the bell-cranks, the posts, the lever, and slotted segment. It is also evident that various changes and modifications and omissions might be resorted to in the forms, constructions, and arrangements of the parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit my invention to the construction described, but consider myself entitled to all such changes as fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
, 1. In a harrow, the combination of a draftframe, tooth-bars, bell-crank levers fulcrumed to the draft-frame and having corresponding arms coupled to and carrying the tooth-bars, means pivotally joining the corresponding opposite arms of the bell-crank levers, a lever connected with the bell-crank levers for simultaneously swinging them to simultaneously raise and lower the tooth-bars, and means for locking the lever, bell-crank levers and tooth-bars in the desired positions, substantially as described.
2, In a harrow, in combination, a draftframe,bellcrank levers fulcrumed to the draftframe, tooth-bars pivotally attached to corresponding arms of the bell-crank levers, a bar pivotally attached to the corresponding opposite arms of said bell-crank levers, a lever connected with said bar for swinging the bellcrank levers simultaneously and provided with locking means, a standard rigid with the draftframe, posts fixed to the tooth-bars and parallel with said standard, a bar, connecting the free ends of the posts, a link pivotally connecting the standard and an adjacent post, substantially as described.
3. In a harrow, in combination, a draftframe, vertically-swinging levers fulcrumed to the draft-frame and arranged in corre sponding series along opposite sides thereof, vertically-movable tooth-bars, each tooth-bar carried by a pair of said levers, a set-lever mounted on said frame and provided with locking means, and connections from said set-lever to said vertically-swinging levers to raise and lower the same and the tooth-bars simultaneously, means connecting the tooth-bars and holding them from turning in the plane of their upward and downward motion, substantially as described.
4. In a harrow, in combination, a frame to which the draft is applied, a series of vertically-movable transverse tooth-bars, series of vertically swinging levers connecting said tooth-bars to said frame, and manually-operated actuating and controlling mechanisms connected with said levers for swinging the same simultaneously to raise and lower the tooth-bars and hold the same in the desired adjustment, connecting means holding the tooth-bars from axial movement in their rise and fall, substantially as described.
5. In a harrow, in combination, a main frame, a series of vertically-movable toothbars provided with curved barrow-teeth, series of vertically-swinging levers connecting the tooth-bars with the frame and carrying the tooth-bars vertically, means connecting the tooth-bars, said means comprising posts attached to the tooth-bars and connected pivotally with a fixed standard on the draft-frame and said standard, whereby the tooth-bars are held from changing the angle of the teeth, and a set-lever and locking means connected with said levers to swing them vertically and hold the same and the tooth-bars in the desired vertical position, substantially as described.
6. Inaharrow, in combination,amain frame to which the draft is applied, a vertically-movable tooth-frame comprising tooth-bars carrying teeth, vertically-swinging levers connect IIO form a tooth-frame parallel with the draft side bars extending in the line of draft and having cross connections, vertically-movable transversef tooth-bars connected together to form a tooth-frame, bell-crank levers fulcrumed to the draft-frame side bars and havscribed.

9. In a harrow, in combination, a draftframe, a series of vertically-movable toothbars, each tooth-bar having a post rigid therewith, astandard rigid with the frame, a bar connecting said tooth-bar posts, a verticallyswingi ng link pivotally joining said standard and an adjacent post, vertically-swinging levers connecting the tooth-bars with the draftframe, and means for swinging said levers to raise and lower the tooth-bars, substantially as described.
10. In a harrow, in combination, a draftframe, a vertically-movable tooth-bar, a pair of vertically-swinging levers fulcrumed to said frame and pivotally coupled to said tooth-bar to raise and lower the same, a post rigid with said tooth-bar, a'standard 'verticall y rigid with the draft-frame and parallel with the post, a vertically-swinging link pivotally joined to said post, and means to' swing said levers to raise and lower the tooth-bar and lock the same in the desired positions,substantially as described.
11. In combination, in a harrow, a draftframe having side bars parallel with the line of draft, series of bell-crank levers arranged along said side bars and fulcrumed thereto at their angles and each having a laterally-extending arm and an upwardly-extending arm,
transverse tooth-bars loosely mounted in the laterally-extending arms of opposite levers respectively, means holding the tooth bars against independent turning as the levers swing, a set-lever provided with a lock, bars pivotally connecting the upwardlvextending arms of the levers, and connections from said set-lever to said bars to swing said. bell-crank levers, simultaneously, substantially as de:
crumed thereto, series of tooth-bars loosely mounted in said levers and moved vertically 3 thereby, means to swing said levers simultaneously and lock them with -the tooth-bars held at the desired elevation, a standard rigid with the frame, posts rigid with the toothbars, a bar connecting said posts, a link pivotally connecting said standard and an adjacent post and between its pivotal points equal in length to the distance between the fulcrum of each lever and its point of connection with a tooth-bar, the plane of the length of said link'being maintained parallel with the said portions of each lever, substantially as described.
13. In a harrow, the combination,of adraftframe, vertically-swinging levers fulcrumed to the frame and arranged in pairs, the levers of each pairarranged on opposite sides of the frame, transverse tooth-bars, each pair of levers carrying a tooth-bar loosely coupled to the ends thereof, means to simultaneously swing the levers vertically to lift and depress the tooth-bars and lock them in the desired vertical position, each tooth-bar having upright end posts rigid therewith, barsconnecting the posts at corresponding ends of the tooth-bars, standards rigid with the frame sides. and vertically-swinging links pivotally joining said standards and the adjacent posts, said links being parallel with and above the portions of the adjacent levers carrying a tooth-bar, substantially as described.
14. In combination, a draft-frame, verti cally swinging ground supports coupled thereto, vertically-movable tooth-bars connected to form a tooth-frame, vertically-swinging levers carrying said tooth-frame and fulcrumed to said draft-frame, means for simul'- lower the tooth-frame, and connections from said vertically moving elements to said ground-supports to elevate the same when the tooth-bar's are moved'down and to depress the same when the tooth-bars are moved up, substantially as described.

In a harrow, in combination, a draftframe, vertically swinging ground supports fulcrumed to the draft frame, verticallyswinging levers fulcrumed to the draftframe, tooth-bars carried by said levers, said levers having upwardly-extending arms, 'connecting-rods from the ground-supports toadjacent upwardly eXtending arms, and means provided with a lock and connected with said upwardly-extending arms to simultaneously swing the levers, substantially as described.
16. In a harrow, in combination, a draftframe, a tooth-frame having. tooth-bars and teeth, lever-lifting connections between the draft-frame and tooth frame and through which the tooth-frame receives its draft, and operating means, comprising a post on the with pivotal connections between'the same,
whereby the tooth-frame can be moved vertically without varying the angle of the teeth,
substantially as described.
17. In combination, in a curved spring-tooth harrow, a vertically-movable tooth-frame comprising tooth-bars provided with teeth, means rigidly securing the tooth-bars from revolving, adraftframe,and lifting devices, through which the toothframe receives its draft, whereby the tooth-frame can be raised and lowered from the draft-frame, substantially as described. 18. In a harrow, in combination, a draftframe, a vertically-movable tooth-frame carrying teeth, said tooth-frame comprising tooth-bars and means rigidly securing the same from revolving, swinging connections between said frames pivotally joined to the tooth-frame and through which the toothframe receives its draft, and a lever-lifting device provided with a lock, whereby the toothframe can be raised and lowered from the draft-frame to regulate the working depth of the teeth or raise the same entirely from Working position, substantially as described.
19. In a harrow, in combination, a draftframe comprising parallel side bars, a vertically-movable tooth-frame provided with teeth and comprising tooth-bars and connections rigidly connecting the tooth-bars against axial turning in the adjustment of the toothframe, lifting-levers joining said frames, and through which the tooth-frame receives its draft and operating means, substantially as described.
20. In a harrow, in combination, a draftframe, a vertically-movable tooth-frame provided with teeth, connections between the tooth-bars holding the teeth at a constant angle of work-swinging supports between and pivotally joined to said frames, and through which the tooth-frame receives its draft, and means for raising and lowering the toothframe and holding the same at the desired adjustment with respect to the draft-frame, substantially as described.
21. In a harrow, in combination, a draftframe, a vertically-movable tooth-frame carrying teeth, tooth-bars, connections between the tooth-bars holding them against revolving in change of their level, levers fulcrumed to the draft-frame and pivotally joined to the tooth-frame, and through which the toothframe receives its draft, and operating mechanism coupled to raise and lower the toothframe, substantially as described.
22. In combination, in a harrow, a vertically-movable tooth-frame carrying teeth, a draft-frame, lifting devices through which the tooth-frame receives its draft, ground-supports pivotally connected with said lifting devices,operative connections between said parts to adjust and secure the same in position relatively to each other, substantially as described.
23. In a harrow, a draft-frame, tooth-bars provided with teeth and pivotally connected to the draft-frame, a lever with locking means operatively connected to the tooth-bars to secure the latter above and below the draftframe, operative means holding the tooth-bars against axial turning, pivotally mounted ground-supports, connected operative means between the ground-supports and the moving members to adjust the ground-supports in relation to the tooth-bars, in combination, substantially as set forth.
24. In a harrow, in combination, a horizontally-disposed draft-frame, vertically-movable transverse tooth-bars connected together to form a tooth-frame parallel with the draftframe, levers connecting the frames, a set-lever and locking means operative to hold the frames in desired vertical position relative to each other, means holding the tooth bars against axial turning, ground-supports pivotally mounted and operative connections between the elevating-lever and the ground-supports to elevate or depress the latter as the tooth-bar frame is depressed or elevated relatively to the draft-frame, substantially as described.
25. In a harrow, a draft-frame, tooth-bars adapted to be raised or depressed above or beloW the draft-frame, pivotal connections between the draft-frame and the tooth-bars, a set-lever and lock whereby the tooth-bars may be secured vertically as desired, pivotally-supported ground-supports operative connections between the same and the set-lever, in combination. substantially as described.
26. In a harrow, a draft-frame, tooth-bars provided with teeth, levers pivotally connecting the draft-frame and the tooth-bars, locking means and a set-lever operatively connect ed to the levers to lift the draft-frame above the work-line of the teeth, means holding the tooth-bars against independent turning as they are raised or lowered, in combination, substantially as described.
27 In a harrow, a draft-frame, tooth-bars provided with teeth, levers pivotally connecting the draft-frame and the tooth-bars and supporting the draft-frame above the Workline of the teeth, locking means and a set-lever connected with said levers to adjust and hold the draft-frame and the tooth-bars relative to each other, means holding the toothbars against independent turning as they are raised or lowered, ground-supports pivotally attached to the draft-frame, pivotal connections between the same and the operative parts to adjust the ground-supports to coact With the tooth-bars to regulate the depth of cut of the teeth, in combination, substantially as described.
28. In a harrow, a draft-frame, tooth-bars provided with teeth, and provided with connections to hold the teeth at a constant angle of work, levers pivotally connecting the draftframe and the tooth-bars and supporting the latter on the draft-frame, locking means and a set-lever whereby the tooth-bars may be seerate as an integral structure and whereby the draft-frame may be adjusted in cooperation with the tooth-bars to regulate the depth of cut of the teeth, in combination, substantially as described.
29. In a harrow, a draft-frame, tooth-bars provided with teeth, levers pivotally supporting the tooth-bars on the draft-frame, locking means and a set-lever to secure the tooth-bars relatively to the plane of the draft-frame,
ground-supports pivotally mounted and pivotally connected to the set-lever, in combination, substantially as set forth.
30. In a harrow, in combination, a rigid draft-frame, a tooth-frame, pivotal ly-m ounted levers operatively connecting the frames, pivotally-mounted ground-supports in pivotal operative connection with the levers, operative means connected with the levers to adjust the relative position of the tooth-frame and the draft-frame and the ground-supports, substantially as described.
31. In a harrow, the combination of a toothframe carrying teeth rigidly fixed thereon, a draft-frame, parallel levers provided with supporting ends pivotally connected with the draft frame and pivotally supporting the tooth-frame, connections between the levers, and means for locking the levers, substantially as shown.
32. In aharroW, the combination of a toothframe carrying teeth rigidly secured thereon, a draft-frame, parallel members pivotally connecting the frames parallel to each other, pivotal connections between such members and a set lever, a set-lever and lock operative to secure the frames in fixed relation, substantially as shown.
