SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,917, dated March 29, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD L. MODIVITT, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Belvidere, in the, county of Boone and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to construct a pencil-sharpener in which a knife is supported by a swinging arm which moves in contact with an inclined guide-post and a support for the pencil, thereby whittling the end of the pencil to a point, and in the knife made movable in its lengthwise direction, so that new wearing-surfaces may be presented. 7

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved pencil-sharpener. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. at, Fig. 1.

The base portion 1 forms a receptacle for holding the whittlings and in this instance is cylindrical in form and supported upon the rubber tips 2.

Within the base is located an incline 3. To the side of the incline is secured a holder or guide 1 for the end of the pencil. A support for the pencil islocated in rear of the'holder 4 and comprises the forked upper end 5 and screw-threaded shank 6, having a connection with the boss 7, extending from the bottom of the base.

An arm 8 has two perforated ears 9 at one end, a handle 10 at its other end, two projections 11 extending from its lower face, and a lug 12 extending from its upper face and provided with a screw-threaded opening. A screw 13 has a connection with the lug 12. The upper inner faces of the projections 11 are recessed. A knife-blade M has its beveled lower edge located in the recesses of the projections, and the screw 13 is turned down against the upper edge of the knife, thereby holding it in connection with the arm 8 in a manner to permit it to be adjusted in the direction of its length in order that nearly the entire cutting edge may be'used.

Between the ears 9 is located an eye 15, having a screw-threaded shank 16. This shank Fig. 4c is a section on dotted line has a screw-thread connection with the boss 17 extending diagonally from thebase. The shank 16 is located at substantially right angles to the incline 3.

In use the end of the pencil to be sharpened is located in the holder 4: and in the support 5 and constantly turned while being sharpened. The arm 8 is given a swinging movementup and down the incline, which will carry the knife in contact with the end of the pencil, thereby removing a portion of it, which is repeated as the pencil is turned. The ofiset 18, extending from the rear upper edge of the arm 8, serves to hold the upper edge of the arm some distance from the incline, thereby presenting the knife diagonally to the lengthwise direction of the pencil. By revolving the arm 8 the shank 16 may be lengthened, which will lessen the cut of the knife. The arm could not be revolved were it not for its pivotal connection with the eye 15. By adjusting the pencil-support vertically more or less pitch is given to the pencil with respect to the knife.

I claim as my invention- 1. A pencil-sharpener comprising a receptacle-base, an incline supported by the base, a pencil-holder, a pencil-support, anda knife having a swinging movement over the holder, and guided by the incline.

2. A pencil-sharpener comprising a receptacle-base, an incline supported by the base, a pencil-holder, an adjustable pencil-support, and a knife having a swinging movement over the holder and guided by the incline.

3. A pencil-sharpener comprising a receptacle-base, an incline supported by the base, a pencil-holder, an adjustable pencil-support, an arm having a swinging and pivotal movement, and a knife supported by the arm.

4. A pencil-sharpener comprising a receptacle-base, an incline supported by the base, a pencil-holder, an arm having a swinging movement over the holder and guided by the incline, and an adjustable knife carried by the arm.

5. A pencil-sharpener comprising a receptacle-base, an incline supported by the base, a pencil-holder, an arm having a swinging and pivotal movement, a knife carried by the arm,

the projections and made movable in the I lengthwise direction of the arm, and a screw i'or clamping the knife in engagement with the projections.
