IMPROVEMENT In GAR-BRAKES.
TO ALL PFRSONS 4'IO WHOM THESE PRSENTS MAY COME:
Be it'known that I,.WILLIAM H. BURKE,of Brighton, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Brake-Mechanism for Railway or various other Wheel-Carriages; -and I do hereby declare the sam-oto be fully described in the following specicationfand represented in the aecompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, and K Figure 2 an under side view of a railway-ear truck provided with my invention.
In such drawings,A denotesthe `platform, B B B B the wheels, and C C the axles of such truck. Aside ofthe periphery of each Wheel, and from the bearing-frame a, a. friction-brake or rubber, D, is suspended by a staple, b, projecting from the said frame. Four carfnsE E E E, ixed upon tivo shafts F F, .arranged parallel to the axles, are disposed ivith respect to` the brakes in manner as represented. The shafts F F have their journals supported in hangers ddd d.' Each shaft, F, has one of the worm-gears G G applied to it, and such gears engage with two Worm-screws,H H, fixed onva horizontal shaft, I,extending longitudinally through the truck-frame, and supported' by hangers or brackets'K K, arranged as shown in figs. 1 and 2. At either or each e'nd ofthel shaft I is a'ibevel-gear, L, which cngageswith another such gear, M, carried by a vertical shaft,
N, arranged at-or near the end of the carriage and providedjvith a hand-wheel, D. By laying hold of and revolving the hand-wheel, the cams may be revolved simultaneously against all the brakes, so as to force them against the peripheries of all thevheels, Byturning back the hand-wheel 'the wheels may be relieved from such pressure of the brakes. v y
The advantage of m'y brake-mechanism, in comparison to theordnary lover and chain-mechanism for actuating the brakes ofrailway-cars, is that mine requiresy n'o'ratchets and pawls to hold the brakes in contact with the wheels. "Furthermore, the rubbers orv brakes can be forced against the Wheels with any degree of pressure that may be required.
