JOHN MULVENY, OF FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS.
FIRE-BOX FOR COOKlNG-STQVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 754,482,.dated. March 15, 1904.-
Application filed October 14:, 1902- .To all whom it may concern/.2
' Be it known that I, J OHN MULVENY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Boxes for Cooking-Stoves,
of whichthe following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a diagram of a fire-box with interior features shown in perspective, the front of the fire-box being removed; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a movable stove-lining.
I have found that the fire-boxes of standard cooking-stoves in common use are unnecessarily deep and necessitate the consumption of more coal than is needed to develop the amount of heat required for cooking. I have likewise learned that when such a cooking-stove is used as a radiator for heating, and hence only a small quantity of coal is called for, the grate area of said stove is too large in that to support combustion the entire grate area must be covered to such a depth that coal is wasted.
Now it is the object of my invention to provide for those using such stoves a cheap, simple, and effective way to save the coal that otherwise would be wasted.
In the drawings illustrating the principle of my invention and the best mode now known to me of applying that principle, A is a firebox having a grate B, both of which are of the usual construction. Atable-grate C, provided with legs at its four corners, rests upon the grate B. Its size is such that it can be put into its position upon the grate or lifted away there- The next feature of my invention is a movable lining D, consisting of a base 6, an upright portion f to form the end of the fire-box, and a tongue g on the bottom of the base to engage the grate-bars and maintain the movable lining in its upright position.
From the above description the operation of my invention will be plain and is as follows: When entire grate area is to be used,
Serial No. 127,287. (No model.)
as for cooking, the table-grate C is put into position shown in Fig. 1, the movable lining D being removed, and coal is put thereon in the usual way. The coal that would occupy the space between the two grates B C is thus saved without impairing the cooking efiiciency of the stove. Should it be desirable to use only a portion of the grate area of the table-grate C or of the grate B, if the tablegrate be dispensed with, the tongue 9 is placed in engagement with such grate-bars as will give the desired length of grate area and coal is put into the new and shortened coal-space of the fire-box to the depth that will insure combustion. In consequence of this arrangement of the parts all the coal that would otherwise cover the exposed portion of this grate is saved.
I have found that by diminishing the width of the space between the grate-bars in the table-grate O, as shown in Fig. 1, I am enabled to burn soft coal most successfully; but I do not claim this as forming part of my inven tion.
The table-grate C and movable lining D are preferably made of cast-iron; but I do not wish to be limited to any particular material.
Having described my invention, what I claim In a cooking-stove, the combination of its fire-box; a removable table-grate provided with legs, said grate and legs being cast in one piece; and a movable lining formed in one piece, made up of a base, and upright portion,
and a tongue depending from the bottom of the base, to engage the grate-bars of said tablegrate, to locksaid lining to said table-grate and maintain said movable lining in an upright position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
I JOHN MULVENY.
Witnesses: ROBERT C. DAVIS, v RICHARD P. BORDEN.
