SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 753,740, dated March 1, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILHELM MAX Roon- STROH, works manager, a subject of the Em-' 1 a complete specification.

This invention relates to a printing-block adapted in conjunction with foundation-sheets of difierent colors to produce three-color effects.

In printing-blocks according to the present acters from an intermediate sheet and the affixing of such characters to a foundation- 'sheet is possible in a single operation, and the desired characters are at the same time partially colored or printed by means of printing-surfaces formed on the printing-block between the knife-like edges thereof, thus enabling the three-color effect heretofore mentioned to be obtained.

. The accompanying drawings illustrate a printing-block according to the present invention, a letter form being chosen merely for the sake of illustration; but it will be understood that any desired literal, pictorial, or other device may be employed.

Figure 1 is a plan of the printing-block;

Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic longitudinal section through the printing-block, the object to be printed, and the intermediate sheet.

The printing-block a has substantially the known form and is provided with knife-like edges or outlines b, which inclose the printing-surfaces c to be inkedc'. 0., they extend throughout the outline of the surface 0. These knife-like edges or outlines b not only surround the outer edge of the printing-block, but are formed at any desired place on the face of the block so as to obtain shadow effects, Figs. .1 and 2. If, for example, a three-colored effect is to be obtained, an intermediate sheet eof paper, for instance, Fig. 3-is placed upon the article to be printed upon (cardboard or the like) 01. The upper surface of the intermediate sheet'e may be colored, or-

namented, or corrugated, as desired.

The printing-surface c of the printing-block a is first inked in the usual way with a color different from that of the intermediate sheet and article to be printed. The knife-like edges or outlines I) cut out the letter, picture, or the like from the intermediate sheet 6 on the descent of the printing-block a, while the raised printing-surfaces 0 print the corresponding parts of the intermediate sheet e with the color that is upon them. The parts of the intermediate sheet 6 that come between the printingsurfaces 0 and the knife-like edges or outlines b are untouched by the printing-ink and retain their original color, so that the intermediate sheet that'is stamped out will be of two colors. The device stamped out of the intermediate sheet is held fast during the printing operation upon the foundation-sheet, the outlines of the article cut out being pressed into the foundation-sheet and there held fast. The foundation-sheet during the printing operation is slightly indented and the sheet 6 is forced into the indentations, thereby holding the letter or other device that has been cut out without the use of adhesive material. The

parts of the intermediate sheet e that come be-- tween the printing-surfaces 0 and the knifelike edges or outlines 6 project slightly, as shown at Fig. 3, and thereby producea relief effect. As will be understood, any desired multiple-color effects may be produced by this method. For instance, the sheet cl may be red, the intermediate sheet e blue, and the printing-surfaces 0 of the printing-block inked with black. Any desired variations can of course be made, the essential feature of the invention the said printing-surface, said cutting means being that these effects are produced by a forming the edges of the printing-block and printing-block in a single operation. a part of the edges of said raised portion.
