SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 753,107, dated February 23, 1904.

Be it known that LTHoMAs W. PINorreAox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gibsland, in the parish of Bienville and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Self-Supporting Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in sunshades; and its object is to provide a portable device of this character which can be readily carried by a person without interfering with the free use of the arms.

Another object is to provide a shade which can be readily adjusted to a desired inclination, means being employed for locking the shade in any position to which it may be adjusted.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in providing ayoke so shaped as to t upon the shoulders of a person, and this yoke has upwardly-extending arms, to which are pivote-d the sides of a sunshade of peculiar construction. Flexible brace-strips are fastened to the sides of the sunshade and are adjustably connected to the arms of the yoke, and these strips are provided with means whereby they may be fastened in any ,position Ato which they may be The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective view of my improved sun-shade, the same being broken away to show the points of connection between the cover and the arms.

Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference, l is a substantially U-shaped body having its ends bent downward to form hooks 2 of suicient size to extend over the shoulders of a person. The ends of the hooks are bent upward, as shown at 3, and these ends are formed integrally with eyes t, from which project upwardly-extending arms 5, having eyes 6 at their extremities.

Strips 7 are connected kto the ends of the hooks 2 and are adapted to extend across the body of the person carrying the sunshade, and thereby securely fasten the device in position. AringS, formed, preferably, of heavy wire, is provided at opposite sides with eyes 9, which engage the eyes 6, hereinbefore referred to. Bows 10, formed of light wire, are fastened at their ends to opposite sides of the ring 8 and serve to support a flexible cover 11, formed of any suitable material. A flexible strip 12 is fastened to each side of the sunshade at opposite sides of the eye 9 adjacent thereto, and this strip extends through the eye 4 and is looped therein, as shown.

It will be understood that when the cover is tilted forward the strips 12 will slide through the eyes 4. Should it be desired to hold the cover 11 in Vadjusted position, so as to prevent displacement by heavy winds, a plugl 13, ar-

ranged at the end of a cord 14, can be inserted in each eye t, so as to bind the Y strips 12 to said eyes.

The device is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction andlight and durable. It can be readily carried by a person without interfering with the movements 'of the arms and will aiford an eiiicient shield from the suns rays.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I am aware that changes may be made in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction which may accordingly be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. The combination with a cover, and a frame therefor; of a cover-supporting bodyengaging device formed in a single strip of material and comprising arms pivotally connected to opposite sides of the frame, hooks integral with the arms and adapted to receive the shoulders of a person, a U-shaped body integral with and connecting the hooks, a securing-strap connecting thehooks, and stays adjustably secured tothe frame and arms.
