BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,899, dated February 23, 1904.
\ Application filed August 10, 1903. Serial No. 168,929. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH M. GIBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at (Iowansville, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bottles, and has for its object the providing of a bottle adapted to be securely closed and sealed by a stopper that cannot be drawn or detached from the bottle without breaking ofl? the neck of the bottle, so that it cannot again be used in its original form.
I attain the desired object by means of the novel construction and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical section taken through the neck of the bottle and showing my improved stopper therein in elevation with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the bottle before the parts are applied. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of a glass stopper. Fig. 4 is a detailed View of the toothed washer. Fig. 5 shows a key for tightening the glass stopper. Fig. 6 is a detailed view of the breaking-tool.
Corresponding parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the drawings by the same reference-numerals.
1 designates the body portion of a bottle.
2 designates the neck, which is formed to receive an ordinary stopper or cork 3 and is also provided with an extension 4, having screw threads therein, as shown. A glass stopper 5 is also provided with screw-threads adapted to engage with the screw-threads in the extension 4. The extension is provided with an interior annular seat or offset 6 with two holes therein, as shown at 7. A washer 8 is adapted to fit in the extension and rest on the sheet or offset, as shown, and is prevented from turning in the neck of the extension by studs 9, which are adapted to fit in the holes 7. The washer is provided with teeth, which are preferably disposed around the rim thereof, as shown at 10.
Attached to the stopper 5 by any suitable means, but preferably by a stud 12, adapted to be cemented in a hole formed in the stopper to receive it, is a spring catch or ratchet 13, a part of the stopper being cut away or flattened to admit of free operation of the ratchet. When the washer is in place in the extension and the glass stopper 5 is placed in the neck of the extension and screwed down therein, the ratchet 13 engages with the teeth in the washer and prevents the stopper from being withdrawn or detached from the neck Without breakage. It is found desirable to apply shellac or some other suitable adhesive material to the stopper 5 before placing same in the neck of the extension in order that the same may be absolutely air-tight regardless of whether or not a cork is inserted in the neck proper of the bottle after it is filled. At the point of connection between the neck proper, 2, and the extension 4 an exterior annular groove or incision is made for the purpose of weakening the bottle at that point.
In operation the bottle is filled in any suitable way, and the cork or stopper 3 is placed in the neck 2. The washer 8 is then placed in the neck of the extension, so that the studs 9will fit in the holes 7. The stopper 5 is then treated to a coating of shellac or other desirable adhesive substance and screwed into the extension by any desirable means, preferably by a key 14, which fits in a hole 15 at the top of the stopper, so that the ratchet 13 engages with the teeth of the washer 8: The bottle can be opened by striking the extension 4 against any hard substance by placing the neck 2 againsta table or counter and striking the extension a slight blow or, preferably, by means of a wrench or breaking-tool 16 by sliding it sidewise over the top of the extension and giving the same a sudden jerk upward. This action causes the neck to break at the point where it is weakened by means of the annular groove, which is situated at the base of the extension, and leave a smooth edge at the top of the neck proper.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A bottle the neck of which is provided with an interior threaded extension, and an exterior annular groove at the base of the extension, a shoulder, a plurality of holes in the shoulder, atoothed Washer, studs secured to the washer, athreaded glass stopper, a ratchet, and means for securing the ratchet to the stopper, substantially as described. I
2. A bottle the neck of which is provided with an interior threaded extension, and an exterior annular groove at the base of the extension, a shoulder, a plurality of holes in the shoulder, a toothed Washer, aplurality of studs secured to the bottom of the washer, a threaded glass stopper adapted to fit in the neck of the extension, a ratchet, and means for securing the ratchet to the stopper, substantially as described.
3. A bottle the neck of which is provided with an interior annular threaded extension, and an exterior annular groove at the base of the extension, a shoulder, a toothed Washer, a plurality of holes in the shoulder, studs secured to the Washer and adapted to fit the holes in the shoulder, a threaded glass stopper adaptassets ed to fit in the neck of the extension, aratchet adapted to engage with the teeth in the Washer, and means for securing the ratchet to the stopper, substantially as described.
4. In a bottle having a neck provided with an interior annular threaded extension, and an exterior annular groove at the base of the extension, the combination of an exterior annular threaded stopper adapted to fit in the neck of the extension, a shoulder, a plurality of holes in the shoulder, atoothed Washer, a plurality of studs secured to the Washer and adapted to fit in the holes in the shoulder, a ratchet adapted to engage with the teeth in the washer and means for securing the ratchet to the stopper, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HUGH M. GIBB. Witnesses:
