Beit known that I, ELLERY CARROLL, a citizen of 'the'United States, .residing at Morrow, 1n the county 'ofWarr'en and State ofOhio,
have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsShoelnLoaders, of which the following aspeciiication.
'This invention appertains to apparatus designed most especially for loading shocks of j-gnain-into an ordinary farm-wagon, the mechanism being of such construction as to utilize the draft for elevating the load to a proper height, after which the load may be swung by manual operation to a position over the wagon to be discharged therein.
For a full description of the invention and themerits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge ofthe details of construction of the means for efiecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.
While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shock: loader embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a rear view. Fig. 4: is a detail viewof the snap for securing the hoisting-rope after the same has been passed ound the shock or load.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in allthe views of the drawings by the same referencecharacters.
The apparatus is of the nature of an attachnent and is adapted to be connected to a farm- Wagon in any convenient and substantial way, soas to. deposit the load therein.
In its simplest form the shock-holder comcrane 4, the latter being mounted so as to .swing about a vertical axis and operable by means of a lever 5, secured to the post 6 in any subtantial manner. To steady the crane, upright 7 is provided and secured at its lower end to the frame and bracedat its upper end by means of stay-rods 8, connected at their lower ends to the frame-3 about as indidated.
'h0isting-rope19 is sec The axle 2 is loosely mounted in bearings 9 at the outer end of the frame 3 and is provided with ground-wheels 10, which impart rotary movement to the axle as the load is drawn over the field.
A drum 11 is loosely mounted upon the axle 2 and is movable thereon by means of shipperlever 12, having a forked end to embrace the axle. A half-clutch 17 is applied to the opposite end of the drum and cooperates with a corresponding half-clutch 18, secured to the frame, whereby upon moving the drum in ward or to the right upon the axle 2, so as to bring the clutch elements 17 and 18 into engagement, the drum 11 is held stationary.
The hoisting-rope 19 passes over guide-pulleys 20, applied to opposite end portions of the arms of the crane, and one end is secured to the drum 11 and is adapted to wind thereon, and the opposite end is provided with securing means for attachment thereof to the load or shock. The attaching device consists ofa frame 21, provided with a fixed book 22, sheave-pulley 23, pivoted hook 24, and springactuated lock-lever 25, the latter being slidably mounted in an extension of the frame 21 and adapted to pass under the inner end of the pivoted hook 24 to hold it closed upon the rigid hook 22 when the ring 26, applied to the end of the hoisting-rope 19, is engaged with the hooks 22 and 24.

The shipper-lever 12 is now operated to move the drum 11 to the left to bring the clutch elements 15 and 16 into engagement, and upon driving the team forward the drum 11 is rotated in the manner stated and winds the hoisting-rope 19 thereon suficiently to elovetc the shoot: or load to the required point, when the lever 15% is operated to move the drum inward or to, the right, so as to bring the clutch elements 17 and 18 into engagement, thereby holding the shock in suspension.
The crane is now swung'loy means of the lever 5 so as'to bring the shock orload over the wagon, and the lever 12 is operated to move the drum 11 to an intermediate point, when theweig-ht of the shock will unwind the rope from the drum and permit the load to drop into the wagon, when the h0isting-r0pe is disconnected therefrom and the apparatus ready for repetition oi the operation for depositing additional shocks or loads into the wagon.
