Be it known that we, GEORGE L. BLACKMAN s and MARY P. BLACKMAN, citizens of the and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a supplemental pieplate rim designed to be applied to the rim of a pie-plate to close the outer contiguous edges of the upper and lower crusts of a pie to prevent the escape of the juices.
The object of the invention is to provide a supplemental pie-plate rim which will not unduly pinch the edges of the crusts, which will prevent overflow of the juices in the event of the boiling over of the pie at the center, which will be accurately gaged as to position on the pie-plate, and which, by preventing the escape of the juices from either the center or edges of the pie, will avoid sticking of the pie to the plate or soiling of the oven.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the application of the invention to a pieplate. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes a pieplate of ordinary form, and 2 the rim thereof. The supplemental rim 3 comprises a ring of angle form in cross-section, the same hav-:
ing a horizontal rim portion l to cooperate with the rim 2 of the pie-plate and an up-- wardly-extending flange 5, the latter serving as a retaining-wall to prevent the uices from flowing off when from anycause the pie boils out of the center and the juices break through the outer crust. At regular intervals the said rim portion 4 is provided with depending pins or projections 6. These pins, of which there may be any desired number, form gage-pieces to support the supplemental rim upon the rim portion 2 of the pie-plate and to hold it spaced a determined distance therefrom to avoid undue pinching or compression of the edges of the crusts when the supplemental rim is clamped to the plate. The rim portion 1 of the supplemental rim may be fluted or corrugated, as shown, to stiffen it and flute or crimp theedges of the crusts.
In order to secure the supplemental rim to the pie-plate, pivoted clamps 7 are employed,
each of which consists of a wire bail whose arms 8 and 9 are formed with hooks 8 and 9 at their free ends to pivotally engage openings 10 in the flange 5. The outer or free end of the bail, formerly the centralportion of the wire, is bent to provide a V-shaped finger-piece 11, and between said finger-piece and the hooks the said arms 8 and 9 diverge to form an open frame and are bent obliquely at 12 to extend from the openings 10 to the edge of the rim portion 4, thence bent vertically at 13 to extend down outside the edges of the rims 2 and 4, thence bent inwardly at 1 k to take beneath said flange 2, and finally bent downward, as described, to form the finger-piece 11.
In the application of the invention the rim 3 is adjusted to bring the rim portion 4 to rest upon the edge of the upper pie-crust and the gage-pins 6-forced through the crusts to rest upon the rim 2, after which the clamps are swung downward and inward to engage said rim 2, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. ,By this means the supplemental rim will be clamped in position to hold the edges of the crust pressed together, but will be prevented from unduly pinching, compressing, or cutting ter. Hence soiling or gumming of the oven or sticking of the pie to the pan from the outflow of juice will be effectually prevented.
It will be observed that the gage-pins 6 are arranged to lie on lines between the divergent arms forming the open frames of the clamps 7. This prevents any tendency of the supplemental rim to tilt out of gaged position on either pin under any slight irregularities of surface.
From the foregoing description, taken -in connection With the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A supplemental pie-plate rim comprising a ring of angular form, having a horizontal rim portion and a vertical flange, gage-pins extending down from said rim portion, and open-frame clamps pivoted to said flange and bent to engage beneath the rim of a pie-plate, the gage-pins being arranged to lie on lines between the sides of the open frames of the clamps, substantially as described.
2. A supplemental rim for pie-plates having clamps to connect it to the plate, and gagepieces to space it a determined distance from the rim of the plate, substantially as described.
3. A supplemental pie-plate rim comprising a ring of angular form, having a horizontal rim portion and a vertical flange, gage-pins extending downward from said rim portion, and Wire bail-clamps, each comprising an open frame having divergent arms pivoted at their free ends to the flange, bent obliquely to project downward and outward beyond the rim portion of the supplemental rim, thence inwardly to take beneath the rim of the plate and thence downwardly to form a finger-piece, substantially as described.
