FOOT-REST FOR VEHICLES.

citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Peov tone, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Rests for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in foot-rests for vehicles, and has special relation to foot-rests which are adjustable as to height and capable of application to the body of the vehicle atany point.

It consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of a vehiclebody,showingafootrestapplied thereto. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal sectional view through the foot-rest, showing the means for pivotally securing the hangers to the footsupporting portion. Fig.` 3 is a perspective view of an adjustable hanger for the foot-rest formed of flat material. Fig. 4 isa detail sectional view through said hanger. Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating `a hanger which is pivoted to the foot-rest and capable of folding fiat with respect to the same. Fig. 6 is a detail View showing the hanger made of folded material and of a single piece.

This invention is designed to supply a simple foot rest or support for use in vehicles, especially when seats of various heights are employed, and the foot-rest is so constructed that it may b e adjusted to accommodate people of various heights, the rest being adjusted so as to comfortably support the feet of persons sitting upon the seat of a vehicle.

The rest, as shown in the drawings,consists, preferably, in abroad foot-receiving plate, as l, to the ends ofwhich are secured suitable hangers, as 2, having hooked ends, as 3, for engaging the edge of a vehicle-body. The hangers 2 are preferably formed with separable hook portions, as 3, the hooks being adjustably connected with the vertical legs of the hangers 2. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2,

- the hangers 3 may be formed of hollow material or tubing, the long legs 4 of which receive and telescope upon the ends of the np- Wardly-extending hangers. A set-screw, as 5, may be employed for adjustably holding the hooks at different points upon the hangerlegs. In this manner the length of the hangers can be altered at any time to suit the comfort of the party using the foot-rest. Each hanger is preferably formed of twoV upwardlyext-ending portions having hooks 3 at their upper ends, there being at least two hooks at each end of the foot-rest for suspending the said foot-rest from the upper edge of a vehicle-body, as shown in Fig. 1. The hangers may be pivotally secured to the foot-engaging portion of the rest, as shown in Fig. 2. A simple manner of accomplishing this result is to form the hangers 2 of round material, as wire or rodding, and bend the same inwardly beneath the ends of the rest 1, as shown at 5. Hook-bolts 6 are then employed, which have hooked end portions for engaging the round material of the hangers, while the threaded ends of said bolts project upwardly through the rest proper and are engaged by adjustingnuts 7. The inwardly-bentlower ends 5 of the hangersly 2 will thus receive the weight of the rest proper, while the bolts will hold the same in proper position. The hangers may be formed of a single piece of material, as at 8 in Fig. 5, and the foot-rest proper may be made narrower at its sides,.as at 9, than at its ends 10. The reduced central portion of the footrestis thus sufficiently narrow to permit of the hangers being folded along the edges of the rest when not in use, and this facilitates the packing of the foot-rest in a small compass, both for putting it away when not in use or for shipment from place to place. When the rest is to be used, the hangers are unfolded and occupy the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 5, so that their upper bent or hooked ends 11 will hook upon the edge of the vehicle. The hangers for the foot-rest need not be made of round material, however, but may be constructed of iiat material, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The hanger proper, 12, may be constructed in this instance of a single piece folded upon itself at 13 beneath the ends of the foot board or plate, while upwardly-extending legs 14. extend around the ICO end of the footboard and upwardly to meet the supporting-hooks 15. These hooks may also be formed of flat material and are preferably provided with a series of apertures 16, which are engaged by bolts or rivets 17. By having a number of holes or apertures 16 the length of the hangers may be adjusted to accommodatedifferent persons. Thefoldingof the at hangervproper upon itself at its ends 13 not only makes it possible to form the hanger of a single piece of flat material, but reinforces the same at the points Where the attaching-bolts 18 are passed through the same for securing the hangers to the foot board or plate.

It will be observed that the foot-rest can be moved to any point along the upper edge of a vehicle-body, so as to be used with the front or any other seat which may be employed upon the vehicle. The seat may be placed at any distance from the end of the vehicle and the foot-rest arranged in proper relation thereto without reference to the ends of the vehicle.

The device will be found to add greatly to the comfort of parties traveling in a vehicle, since their feet can be comfortably supported without reference to the floor of the vehicle and Without having to place the feet upon the edge of such vehicle. The rest can be easily pushed to a greater distance from the seat or drawn closer to the same, as desired by the party using the same.

The construction of the device is simple and yet useful for the purpose designed.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters P atent, is-

1. A foot-rest for vehicles comprising a foot board or plate, hangers having laterallybent ends pivotally secured to the board near the ends thereof, the said hangers being made of sufficient width to permit of their being -folded along the side edges of the board when not in use, and means carried by the hangers for engaging the sides of a vehicle-body. 2. A foot-rest for vehicles comprising a board or plate, hangers secured to the ends thereof having upwardlyextending legs, a connecting portion arranged beneath the ends of the board or plate and hooked bolts for engaging said connecting portion and holding the hangers in position.

3. A foot-rest for vehicles comprising a foot board or plate, hangers extending upwardly from the ends thereof, hooks at the upper ends of said hangers having recesses for receiving the upper ends of said hangers and set-screws for adjusting the hooks With respect to the hangers.

4. A foot-rest comprising a board or plate reduced in width at its central portion, pivoted hangers secured to the ends of the board or plate and capable of folding along the reduced portion of said board'or plate to facilitate packing or storing.

5. A foot-rest for vehicles comprising a footsupporting board or plate, hangers pivoted to the ends of said board or plate and folding upon the same, the legs of the said hangers lying closely along the edges of the same when in such folded position.

6. A foot-rest for vehicles comprising a foot-engaging board or plate, hangers pivoted to the ends thereof and capable of folding backwardly upon said plate and laterally-eX- tending projections at the ends of said board or plate forming a stop for the hangers when in their unfolded positions.

7. A foot-rest comprising a foot-board, hangers pivotally secured to the end thereof, hooks adjustably secured to the upper ends of the hangers for suspending them upon the sides of a vehicle, the said hooks having sockets adapted to receive the upper ends of the hangers and means for holding them in different adjusted positions within said sockets f for controlling the length of the hangers.
