SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 747,424., dated December 22, 1903.
Application filed March 9, 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMERY O. HoDGEs,a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmer City, in the county of Dewitt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grave-Vaults, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in grave-vaults; and one object of my invention is the provision of a vault which will preserve the remains in a natural condition and which will allow inspection of the interior of the vault for the purpose of viewing the remains.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a grave-vault which will form an ornamental monument in addition to providing a vault which will form a perfect seal and prevent damage from the weather.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a vault which will form an ornament, which will permit of viewing from the exterior the remains within the vault, which will preserve the remains, and which can be produced at a comparatively low price.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my complete vault or tomb. Fig. 2 represents a vertical central sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a slightlymodified construction, and Fig. 4 represents a transverse sectional view of my vault or tomb constructed to receive several-caskets.
In the drawings, A designates the tomb or vault proper, composed of the sides and end Walls, preferably connected by a tongue-and- .groove joint B and forming a rectangular tomb adapted to receive the casket, or it may be formed with two compartments 0 to receive several caskets. Upon the vault proper rests the top D, preferably connected by a tongue-and-groove joint E.

ment. The horizontal stump is provided with a suitable inscription-plate H, and the vertical stump is provided with a window J and with an interior mirror K, whereby the remains in the vault are reflected in the mirror and can be readily viewed from the outside through the window.
In the form of my vault shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the vault or receptacle portion is entirely'under ground and only the ornamental top or monument is in view.
In the formsof my invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the vault rests upon the top of the ground or may be placed in a suitable building to be used as a family-vault, and in this form of my vault I provide the window L, through which a person from the outside may see the remains reflected in the mirror secured in the top of the vault or tomb, as will be understood.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that I provide a grave-vault which may be used for a single casket or for a number of caskets, which will serve the purpose of a monument or tombstone and vault, which will preserve the remains and protect them against the damaginginfluences of the weather,which will permit viewing of the remains from the outside, and which vault can be produced at a comparatively low price.
I claim- 1. A grave-vault having-a window to permit viewing the inside and a mirror for reflecting'the remains within said vault.
2. A grave-vaultconsisting of the lower portion on vault proper, a top fitting the vault, a window to permit viewing the inside of the vault and a mirror for reflecting the remains within the vault.
