improving of the combustion in the furnace, thereby economizing in fuel and reducing the smoke.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of an air-heater which is adapted to utilize the heat otherwise wasted for heating a quantity of air which is subsequently introduced into the furnace-chamber.
The invention further'consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, in which the invention is shown applied to a locomotive, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, partly in elevation, through a locomotive boiler and furnace to which the improvements are applied. Fig. 2 is a section on line was through the fire-box of the locomotive. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line g7 Fig. l.
A is a locomotive-boilerof any suitable construction provided at its forward end with the usual smoke-box B, to which is secured the stack 0. Within the smoke-box is an exhaust-nozzle D and the usual deflector-plate E, which extends from a point just above the fluesdownward and forward, as shown. This deflector-plate E is subject to direct heat of the flame and gases passing through the flues into the smoke-box and is therefore heated to a high temperature, which heat is ordinarily wasted. With the present invention the heat of this plate is utilized by arranging directly forward thereof an air-heating drum F, which extends completely across the smokebox in'rear of the exhaust-nozzle D, the rear wall of said drum forming the deflector-plate.

J is a jacket arranged around the stack C, which is open at its upper end and at its lower end communicates through apertures a with a drum G. Above this jacket is a conical deflector K, secured to the stack, which prevents the ingress of smoke.
L represents conduits connecting with the chamber F on opposite sides of the boiler and extending longitudinally of the latter, preferablyjust within the outer jacket (not shown) to a point near the rear end of the boiler. Here they turn downward and are connected with casings M upon opposite sides of the firebox. Oonnecting with these casing-s M are the dues N, extending through the waterjacket surrounding the furnace-chamber and establishing com munication between said casings M and said furnace-chamber. At the front of the fire-box is preferably arranged a casing O, which is open at its upper end and at its lower end connects with the ashbox. If desired, the casing P may also be used, covering the rear head of the boiler and having an air connection with the ash-box M.
i The parts being constructed as shown anl described, in operation the heat of the flame and gases passing through the fines into the smoke-box is first imparted to the deflectorplate E and is communicated therefrom to the air within the drum F. In passing around said deflector-plate the flame and gases also impart heat to the segmental plate I and to the drum G,and finally in passing out through the stack heat is imparted to the air within the jacket J. As the conduit L connects the drum F with the casings M and as the lat ter are connected through the dues N with the furnace-chamber, it is evident that the draft of the furnace will cause the air to be drawn in from said chambers M, and thereby will produce acurrent of air flowing inward, first entering the upper end of the jacket J, then passing into the drum G and through the segmental passage-way into the drum F, and finally passing through the conduit L into the casings M. The result will be that the heat which would otherwise be lost is imparted to the air in passing through this conduit, and by the time it reaches the furnacechamber the air is heated to a high temperature. Thus when introduced into the chamber it will materially assist in the combustion of the fuel therein, bot-h increasing the steam and preventing the formation of smoke. The combustion is assisted by the heated air which passes through the jacket into the ash-pan and by the heated air in the casing P, which is also turned into the ash-pan M and introduced into the furnace.
If the quantity of air heated is greater than needed for assisting combustion, a portion thereof may be drawn off and used for heating the cars or for any other purpose where heat is required.
What we claim as our invention is- 1. In a steam-generator, the combination with a smoke-box and an inclined deflectorplate therein extending across opposite the ends of the flues in the path of the smoke and heated products and adapted to direct the same downward,of an air-dru m arranged adjacent to said deflector-plate, a connection beand stack, a second drum arranged forward of the stack,a connection between said drums,
an air-inlet connection with the forward drum and a connection between the rear drum and the furnace-chamber.
3. In alocomotive, the combination with a smoke-box and a deflector-plate therein, of an air-heating drum arranged adjacent to said deflector-plate in rear of the exhaust-nozzle and stack, a second drum arranged forward of the stack and above the door of the smokebox, a segmental plate within the shell of the smoke-box forming aconnecting passage between said drums,a jacket surrounding the stack open at its upper end and connected with the forward drum and a conduit connecting the rear drum with the furnace-chamber.
4. In a steam-generator, the combination with a smoke-box,of a deflector-plate therein, of an air-heating drum arranged adjacent to said deflector-plate, an air-inlet conduit adjacent to the stack and heated therefrom connected with said air-drum and a connection between said drum and the furnace.
