SAMUEL CRAIG,` OF GARDEN CITY, KANSAS.
SEECIEIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,147, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed March 23, 1903. Serial No. 149,164. (No model.)
To all whom, t mfr/y concern:
Be itknown thatI, SAMUEL CRAIG, acitzen of the United States, residing at Garden City, in the county of Finney and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Cigar-Holder, of which the following is a specilication.
Thisinvention relates to an improved cigar or cigarette holder, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device of this character by means of which a cigar or cigarette is securely held in the holder, preventing the same from wabbling or being accidentally displaced.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder, the relative disposition of the several part-s being such that when the cigar is introduced in the holder the end thereof will be punetured, forminga cent-ral draft and permitting the smoke to be drawn through the air-passage to the mouthpiece, the central perforating-needle being so arranged as to permit the same being readily detached and used as a cleaner for removing the accumulation of nicotin or other obstructions from the mouthpiece.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in form, proportion, and minor details of constructionmay be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a cigar-holder constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. is a perspective View showin g the several parts detached.
Similarnumerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.
l designates the holder, formed of Wood or other suitable material and provided with a tapering or conical recess 2 and alongitudial bore or channel 3, defining an annular shoulder 4, against which the end of the cigar rests when introduced in the holder. The rear end of the holder is provided with an interiorly-threaded recess 5, adapted to receive one end of a correspondngly-threaded coupling-nipple 6, the oppositely-threaded end of the nipple engaging the interior threads 7 of the mouthpiece 8. The end of the holder is provided with a transversely-disposed slot or groove 9, which communicates with a similarly-arranged slot or groove l0,formed in the nipple 6.
As a means for securing the cigar within the holder and also to form a central draft by perforating the same as the cigar is introduced in the holder, I provide a needle l1, formed of metal orother suitable material and slightly tapered, as shown, one end thereof being pointed and projecting a short distance beyond the end of the holder, the opposite end of the needle passing through the channel 3 being provided with a flat rectangular head 12, which fits within the groove l0 of the nipple 6. The head 12 of .the needle isv provided with laterally-extending ears or lugs 13, adapted to engage the slots 9 in the end of the holder, the needle being locked in position by engagement with the threaded end of the mouthpiece, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. A sleeve or collar la fits over the end of the holder at its juncture with the mouthpiece to assist in holding the needle in place and to give the desired finish to the holder.
In assembling the several parts comprising the holder the slotted nipple 6 is screwed in the threaded recess 5 and the needle introduced in the holder through the nipple, with the laterallyextending lugs engaging the slots 9 and the head l2 fitting Within the transversely-disposed groove in the nipple. The collar or ferrule 14 is then slipped over the end of the holder and the mouthpiece screwed to its seat, securely locking the needle i IOO . so arranged that when the same is withdrawn for cleaning the mouthpiece it Will also remove any obstruction from the body of the holder.
Having thus described the invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cigar-holder, a body portion provided with diametrically-opposed locking grooves or slots, a mouthpiece, and a cigarpiercing needle arranged Within the body portion and provided with laterally-extending lugs engaging the grooves or slots and confined in position by the mouthpiece.
2. In a cigar-holder, a body portion provided With diametrically-opposed locking grooves or slots extending transversely across the end'oi:` the body portion, a detachable mouthpiece, and a cigar-piercing needle provided With laterally-extending lugs engaging the grooves or slots disposed Within the body portion and locked in position by engagement with the mouthpiece.
3. In a cigar-holder, a body portion provided With a smoke-passage, a detachable mouthpiece, and a cigar-piercing needle of less diameter than the smoke-passage disposed Within the same and locked in position by the mouthpiece.
4. In a cigar-holder, a body portion provided-With a smoke-passage, a detachable mouthpiece, a detachable cigar-piercing needle of less diameter than the smoke-passage disposed Within the same, and a needle-engaging means locked in engaging position by said detachable mouthpiece.
5. In a cigar-holder, a body portion provided with a smoke-passage, a cigar-piercin g needle of less diameter than the smoke-passage disposed Within the same, said needle being provided with supporting means extending across the smoke-passage at the end ofthe holder and locked in position by engagement with the mouthpiece.
6. In a cigar-holder, a body portion provided With diametrically-opposed slots or grooves extending transversely across the end ot' the body portion, a detachable mouthpiece, a cigar-piercing needle provided with laterally-extending lugs engaging the slots or grooves, and a collar titting over the body portion and engaging the lugs on the piercingneedle.
7. In acigar-holder, a body portion, a nipple, a mouthpiece detachably secured to the nipple, locking grooves or slots in the ends of the body portion and nipple, and a needle arranged Within the holder and engaging the grooves or slots.
8. A cigar-holder comprising, a body portion, a longitudinal bore or channel formed in the body portion and defining an annular shoulder, a mouthpiece, a slotted nipple one end of which is threaded in the body portion, and the opposite end thereof in the mouthpiece, coincident slots or grooves formed in the end of the body portion and a perforatingneedle provided With a dat rectangular head and laterally-extending lugs fitting within the slots in the nipple and body portion.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
SAMUEL CRAIG.
